Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of device is capable of making wishes in the film?

Answer: Music box

The movie follows Clare, a teenage girl whose life is rather normal though she still has nightmares of her mother's suicide, an event she had the tragedy of witnessing when she was a young girl. Clare heads to school to find her father very awkwardly dumpster diving across the road and, in her embarrassment, she sends him away to another dumpster.

He chooses the trash outside a creepy cemetery, as you do, and it's because of this that he finds an ornate music box that he decides to give to Clare as a gift. Bad idea.
2. What is Clare's absent-minded, almost innocent first wish?

Answer: That Darcy rot

Clare gets home from a particularly rough day at school to find the music box wrapped on her bed. On the side she reads the cryptic words 'seven wishes', which could never possibly be foreboding or some sort of warning. Considering the events in her life at the moment, it makes sense that she decide to half-heartedly make a wish that her school rival, Darcie Chapman, should rot. That night, the music box opens and plays a haunting tune, and when it stops, Darcy ends up with a flesh-eating disease. That's all fine and good, but at the same time, Clare's dog is mauled and killed by rats under her front porch, so that's lousy. Freak accidents?
3. Clare's second wish has to do with which of these?

Answer: Love

After Clare spends a good chunk of her time mourning her dead pet, she ends up grabbing the music box and making the consciously selfish wish that Paul, her long-time crush, fall madly in love with her. The wish goes into effect the very next day with Paul appearing outside her locker. Clare, nowhere near her music box as this happens, has no idea that it opens to play its melody once again. Somewhere across town, her elderly uncle slips and hits his head in his bathtub, and the general scheme of things continues to go on unnoticed.
4. Clare's uncle dies. Does she wish him back to life?

Answer: No

Her real wish is more selfish than that. Clare ends up getting home from school to find that her Uncle August has died (though she doesn't know it's her fault) and, speaking into the music box, she wishes that she were the only beneficiary in his will. So yeah, that happens, and she and her father don't really think much of it as they move into his modern mansion, buy a car, and go on makeover/shopping spree/spa montages. Like every other wish though, this one comes at a price; Clare's old neighbour, the affable Mrs. DeLuca, ends up having a horrible garbage disposal accident.

This time, however, Clare sees the music box open and do its thing.
5. Clare's fourth wish is that her father not be which of these?

Answer: A dumpster diver

Clare starts to have weird dreams about the music box and things start to get weird around her house and school. She and her friend, Ryan, head out to get to get the characters on the music box translated and, when they do, they find that it certainly prescribes seven wishes, but that those wishes come with dire consequences.

There's a legend behind it, specifically about a Chinese woman named Lu Mei, but it's kind of irrelevant. All you really need to know is that there's a demon involved. It doesn't stop Clare from making a fourth wish-- for her father to stop dumpster diving (and he does!)-- but at a cost. Ryan's relative, the one who translated the box, trips and impales herself on a statue in her apartment.
6. Clare makes a fifth wish-- to be popular-- but who dies when that happens?

Answer: Meredith

The knowledge that she may have inadvertently murdered a bunch of people doesn't phase Clare-- that's for sure-- because she makes a fifth wish to be the most popular girl in school. That couldn't possibly have consequences. In fact, when Paul brings Clare to a party she ends up being super popular, walking in to a round of applause.

She suspects nothing, but soon realizes how annoying it could all be. Her suspicions about the box are confirmed (again?) when her friend, Meredith, dies in a horrible elevator accident and she finds the body of Mrs. DeLuca in her house.
7. Clare only gets seven wishes, but what will happen if she uses all of them?

Answer: She'll lose her soul.

When one of her best friends dies, Clare realizes, finally, that something really bad is happening with the music box. She tries to destroy it, but can't, though she knows that if she does, then her wishes will be undone. Ryan, still trying to solve the mystery to avenge his relative's death, suggests that if all seven wishes are used, then a final price must be paid: the wish-maker's soul. June ends up stealing the box for a short time, but Clare gets it back and...y'know...makes another wish. Because why learn from your mistakes, right?
8. Clare's sixth wish is to bring which person back from the dead?

Answer: Her mother

When Clare gets the box back, she wishes for her mother to come back to life and, sure enough, she does, and she ends up having two younger sisters too. The wish ends up bringing more that she expected though, as would be expected. Clare ends up discovering, looking through her mother's paintings, that the only reason her mother committed suicide many years before was because she, too, was using the music box to get seven wishes.

The day she died, she threw out the box and assumed it would never come back.

As the blood price for the sixth wish, Clare's father is killed in an unexpected chainsaw decapitation accident on her birthday.
9. Clare's final wish is to go back in time to prevent which of these specific things from happening?

Answer: Her father from going dumpster diving.

Clare, realizing that she needs to undo all of the mistakes she made, wishes that she go back to the day her father found her the music box to stop him from locating it altogether. And she does. It kind of works out like that. She follows her father along and locates the music box in the trash, stowing it away and heading to school.

She gives the box to a confused Ryan and asks him to bury it, no questions asked, without doing anything with it whatsoever. You know. Magic artifact, cryptic instructions. That works.
10. Who ends up in possession of the seven wishes after Clare?

Answer: Ryan

As soon as Clare turns away from Ryan, she ends up walking into the road and Darcie hits her with her car. Somewhere, the sound of a music box can be heard. The final wish, having been made, still requires her soul and the blood price must be given. All of her friends just happen to be there to see this happen, so I guess pretty much everyone suffers anyways.
Ryan also ends up taking the music box out to a bridge somewhere to bury, but when he sees the 'seven wishes' inscription on the side, he gets an idea...
