Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Quoting George H. W. Bush, the Dude defiantly stated that "This aggression will not____."

Answer: Stand

This quote was shown at the introductory credits. It referenced George H. W. Bush's speech on Aug. 6th 1990 condemning the Iraqi offensive in Kuwait. This gave the audience a date that the movie took place. Later on, the Dude quoted Bush while he talked to the big Lebowski.

This was meant to show how serious his attitude was when he found out the intentions of the big Lebowski. You were left to your own assumptions as to whether or not the Dude was deliberately quoting Bush.
2. Walter mentions, "State of Israel, if you will it, it is no _____."

Answer: Dream

Walter says this while walking into the bowling alley and recognizing Donnie's strike. Walter is taking his ex-wife's Pomeranian bowling. In typical fashion, Walter misunderstands the Dude's inquiring about the dog and continues to explain his quote.
This is a direct quote of Theodor Herzl. He is an Austro-Hungarian writer whom is known as the father of the Zionist movement. The mentioned quote is from Herzl's book, "Old New Land", and refers to the want to have a Jewish national home in Israel.
3. Walter will have you know that, "The supreme court has roundly rejected_____."

Answer: Prior restraint

Walter says this in the cafe while drinking his coffee. He was asked to be quiet after getting excited. Walter has friends that..."died face down in the muck so that we can enjoy our basic freedoms!" and continues to let everyone know "I'm staying...finishing my coffee...enjoying my coffee"

Roundly rejected is a term not commonly used in the Supreme Court and has never been used in a first amendment case. Prior restraint is a type of censorship that the government uses in order to prevent a dangerous situation. Walter is correct in that the U.S. government does forbid prior restraint.
4. According to Walter you can, "Say what you want about the tenets of national socialism, at least it's a(n)_____."

Answer: Ethos

Walter finds out that the kidnappers are Nihilists. He is offended at their lack of belief structure more so than the kidnapping.

The ethos mentioned here is what motivates ideas and customs of a culture. On another note ethos is also one of three modes of persuasion outlined in Aristotle's "On Rhetoric". Pathos and Logos are the other two modes of persuasion. Eros is the Greek god of love.
5. How dark did things go for the Dude?

Answer: "Darker than a black steer's tookus on a moonless prairie night."

"Darkness washed over the Dude...There was no bottom" This is a quote from the narrator referred to only as "The Stranger", a cowboy played by Sam Elliott. This was said when the Dude got drugged by Jackie Treehorn, which was followed by a pretty crazy dream sequence.
6. On Saturday Walter doesn't work, drive a car, ride in a car, handle money, turn on the oven, or roll because of what Jewish tradition?

Answer: Shabbos

Walter is far more bothered by his next league match occurring on Saturday than the kidnapping that took place. Later, Walter gives a stipulation to this rule when the Dude calls by stating that he's "not even supposed to answer the phone unless it's an emergency". He then goes on to mention that he knew it was an emergency and that's why he answered the phone, a great example of a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.

Shabbos is the 7th day of the week and the Jewish day of rest. Walter claims to be Shomer Shabbos which is a person who adheres to the laws prohibited in the Shabbat. As well as not doing certain things, a Shomer Shabbos is expected to do some good things such as; Sabbath meals, rituals, prayers, kindness, beningity, and rest.
7. According to the Dude, how does Jackie Treehorn treat objects?

Answer: Like women

Of course, the Dude is trying to say that Jackie Treehorn treats women like objects. The Dude is having a hard time because he is still drugged. He is trying to explain to the police officer what happened when he was finally told by the officer to, "Get out of Malibu, Lebowski!"
8. What is the Dude's only form of identification?

Answer: Ralph's card

The Dude was asked to provide identification after being arrested while running down the street.

Ralph's is an actual grocery store. Unfortunately, they do not customize discount cards with your name on it anymore.
9. What claim to fame does the Dude take credit for authoring the first draft of?

Answer: Port Huron Statement

This is the Dude explaining his history to Maude Lebowski in bed.

The Port Huron Statement was written June 11-15th, 1962 and summarized the new left movement. It was characterized by pacifism focusing on racial relations and cold war tensions. There was only one draft of the Port Huron Statement and no "compromised 2nd draft". There were revisions though, which may be what the Dude is referring to.
10. What Vietnam era anti-war group does the Dude take credit for being a part of?

Answer: The Seattle Seven

This is also the Dude explaining his history to Maude Lebowski in bed.

"That was me, uh, and six other guys." The Seattle seven is a reference to the Seattle liberation Front, an activist group. The Seattle Seven are the seven most famous members. One of the members is Jeff Dowd who moved to L.A. and became a film producer and befriended the Coen Brothers. He is the inspiration for the Dude.
