Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The spring of 1970 saw this harmonic ballad move up the charts into the Top ten. "Reflections In My Life" was a hot hit for which of these groups?

Answer: Marmalade

Billboard number ten, May 9, 1970. The group was from Glasgow, Scotland, and was originally known as "Dean Ford and The Gaylords" in the mid 60s. They had some moderate success in the U. K. after changing their name in 1966. They did a successful cover of The Beatles "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", which was a number one hit in the U. K. in 1969. "Reflections Of My Life" was their only stateside success though, as the song sold over two million copies.
2. Another song in the spring of 1970 narrowly missed the top spot on the charts. The hard driving song "Vehicle" was put together by whom?

Answer: The Ides Of March

Billboard number two, May 23, 1970. The band began in the suburbs of Chicago in 1964, as "The Shon-Dels". They changed their name in 1966, and almost didn't make it to this category. The had a song on the charts called "You Wouldn't Listen" which made it to number 42 on the Billboard charts. "Vehicle" though, was a smash hit for them in 1970, and many said it sounded like Blood Sweat and Tears had recorded it.

The group disbanded in 1973, and later, one of the founding members, Jim Peterik, founded the group Survivor and wrote all of their smash hits.
3. The summer of 1970 also provided us with the instrumental recording of "The Overture From Tommy (A Rock Opera)". Which group did this one?

Answer: Assembled Multitude

Billboard number 16, August 29, 1970. This was a studio ensemble created in Philadelphia in 1970 by producer Tom Sellers. They recorded an album of instrumentals which included "Tommy", as well as "Woodstock", "Ohio", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", among others.
4. "Smiling Faces Sometimes" don't tell the truth, as this song says. Which group made this statement in 1971?

Answer: Undisputed Truth

Billboard number three, September 4, 1971. This group was a Motown recording act, formed by Norman Whitfield, a member of The Temptations. This song was an adaptation of the same number which had been recorded by The Temptations a few years earlier, with little success.
5. A Broadway show was responsible for this Top 20 hit in 1972. From which show was the "Day By Day" cast recording taken and made into a hit that year?

Answer: Godspell

Billboard number 13, July 29, 1972. Buried in the ensemble of musicians featured on the cast album was a young keyboard player of some note, Mr. Paul Shaffer.
6. In the fall of 1973, this singer recorded "My Maria" with a sound reminiscent of the 60s hits by The Four Seasons. His high falsetto voice helped move this song into the Top ten that year. Name him.

Answer: B. W. Stevenson

Billboard number nine, September 29, 1973. B. W. actually stood for his nickname which was Buckwheat. Stevenson was actually a country artist, and this was a crossover recording for him. Interestingly, he did the original version of "Shambala" which went nowhere for him, but was covered by Three Dog Night and later hit number three on the charts for them. Stevenson passed away in 1988, at age 38, while undergoing heart surgery.
7. "I Can Help" was a number one hit in the fall of 1974. Who could "help"?

Answer: Billy Swan

Billboard number one, November 23, 1974. Swan goes back to 1962 in the music industry, when "Lover Please" was made a hit by Clyde McPhatter. Swan wrote that song, and his career was underway. He wrote almost exclusively country songs, and wrote for artists such as Mell Tillis, Waylon Jennings, and Conway Twitty. "I Can Help" was his only success as a performer.
8. The fall of 1976 provided us with this instrumental hit that went to number one on the charts. "A Fifth Of Beethoven" was recorded by whom?

Answer: Walter Murphy and the Big Apple Band

Billboard number one, October 9, 1976. There was no Big Apple Band here. This was a disco adaption of Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony". Murphy played nearly every instrument heard on the track. The band name was the record company's idea. One problem though. There was already a Big Apple Band performing, so rather than be sued, they changed it to just Walter Murphy.
9. The fall of 1978 saw "Love Is In The Air" crack the Top ten for this gentleman. What was his name?

Answer: John Paul Young

Billboard number seven, October 14, 1978. Born in Scotland, and raised in Australia, Young had a string of hits in Australia, and parts of Europe in the late 70s. This song though, was his only worldwide success, reaching number two in Australia, and number five in the U.K.
10. Who wanted you in the "Driver's Seat" in the fall of 1979?

Answer: Sniff n'the Tears

Billboard number 15, September 29, 1979. The band was from the U. K. and comically, although this song was a major worldwide hit, it never even made it into the Top 40 in the U. K. due to problems with the pressing of the recording there. It was not readily available for purchase, and only made it to number 42.
