Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year was Freddie Mercury born?

Answer: 1946

Of course, when he was born he wasn't known as Freddie Mercury but as Farrokh Bulsara. (Please no one pick me up on the spelling - I know there are many sources that would spell his name differently, but I don't think anyone actually knows how to spell it, apart from his mum!). 1947 was the year Brian May was born, 1949 was Rogers year of birth and John Deacon was born in 1951.
2. In which of these subjects was Freddie Bulsara (as he was known then) talented in before he became a musician?

Answer: art and graphic design

Freddie was quite a talented artist in his younger days and came up with many interesting ideas for fashion.
3. Which group was Freddie in before he joined Queen?

Answer: Ibex

Freddie joined his first serious band, Ibex, in 1969, having become pretty handy on the piano in his younger days. Smile were Queen before Freddie joined and Tim Staffell left. The Cross were a band Roger Taylor set up on the sidelines and The Rolling Stones... well, if Freddie was in the Rolling Stones at any point, I'd like to know!
4. How tall was Freddie?

Answer: 5ft 9

Freddie was indeed 5ft 9 inches tall, which I believe is currently the average height for a man these days. He also, pretty obviously, had black hair and dark brown eyes.
5. Did Freddie ever dance with The Royal National Ballet?

Answer: Yes

This was new to me until recently. Freddie received a standing ovation for his performance!
6. Which European city did Freddie and Montserrat Caballe sing about?

Answer: Barcelona

'Barcelona' was the theme song to the Olympics in 1992. It also was the title track of an album full of duets that Montserrat and Freddie sang together.
7. What was the name of Freddie's first solo album?

Answer: Mr. Bad Guy

Freddie released his solo album in 1985. 'The Great Pretender' was Freddie's version of the Platters hit and wasn't actually on the album. 'Living On My Own' became an early '90s dance hit (and had a great video featuring one of Freddie's notorious birthday parties), and 'These Are The Days Of Our Lives' was one of the last songs Queen released before Freddie died.
8. How many people, approximately, came to see Freddie and Queen at Live Aid in 1985?

Answer: 72,000

That's a lot of people! The show was also seen by 1 billion people worldwide and apparently, Queen stole the show! I would love to have seen it, but unfortunately I was only 1 at the time!
9. Which life-threatening virus did Freddie unfortunatly contract as a result of his younger, more promiscuous days?

Answer: HIV

Unfortunatly, Freddie did contract HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) which led to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). In 2003, there were approximately 800,000-900,000 people in the US alone living with HIV and there are approximately 40,000 new cases every year.
10. In which year did Freddie die?

Answer: 1991

Having developed AIDS, Freddie died on November 24th 1991, and is sorely missed by his fans.
