Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A lecturer father, of Egyptian descent, and an English mother. This singer was brought up in a Moroccan influenced neighbourhood of Brussels, Belgium. She went to boarding school in Sussex, England then lived with her mother in Northampton, England. She was originally part of Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart, then Transglobal Underground. She has also had an active solo singing career. In 2001, she was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Conference Against Racism. Who is this lady?

Answer: Natacha Atlas

Natacha Atlas has explored many different musical styles during her solo career. She has also collaborated with others (albums with Marc Eagleton and the Jocelyn Pook Orchestra being examples). In 1999 her single version of "Mon Amie La Rose" had particular success in France.

She has also had album success in America. In 2003 "Something Dangerous" and in 2006 "Mish Maoul" reached a peak of number thirteen and number twelve respectively, both on the Billboard Top World Music chart.
2. The majority of songs that this group produced were non-lyrical, but not instrumentals. The vocals sounded like words but actually were not. They formed in 1979 and eventually broke up in 1997. They released their first album, "Garlands", in 1982. Who was this Scottish band?

Answer: Cocteau Twins

The Cocteau Twins formed in Grangemouth, Scotland. They released nine albums between 1982 and 1996, including a collaboration with American avant-garde musician and composer Harold Budd.
3. The Alabama 3 (A3) song "Hypo Full of Love" tells the story of Larry Love being very down in the dirt and trying to change his life. He does this by following a dubious-sounding twelve-step plan prescribed by the Reverend Doctor D. Wayne Love, 1st Reverend of which fictional, seemingly rock'n'roll-influenced church? (Hint: The name of the church is actually the band's name before they became Alabama 3.)

Answer: First Presleytarian Church of Elvis the Divine

"The Church of the Poisoned Mind" is a Culture Club song of the early 1980's. The other two are concocted by me, so I assume they're fictional. The best-known Alabama 3 (or A3 as they are known in the U.S.A.) song is probably "Woke Up this Morning" because of it being the theme tune to the "Sopranos" television series. That song and "Hypo Full of Love" can be found on the "Exile on Coldharbour Lane" album.
4. In 1961 this group formed in Guinea, Africa. It wasn't until 1983 that an album, "Au couer de Paris", appeared. In 2008, their second album "Wamato" was released. Over this 47-year time period they had always been performing. This, sometimes twenty-strong, all-female band were always drawn from which particular source?

Answer: The Guinea Army

Their members are exclusively drawn from the ranks of the Guinean Army. Incorporating saxophones and electric guitars, they are unlike any military band you have ever heard!
5. The Angel Brothers have combined on occasions with Barnsley poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan, one example being the song "Captain Beefheart and Mr Neal". It tells the story of Ian's dad, in the early 1970s, attempting to buy a Captain Beefheart record for his sons birthday from Neal's Record Store in Barnsley. He does this by silently passing a note to a female shop assistant. All that is written on this is the album title, followed by the word please. This leads to an undescribed incident which, supposedly, is still talked about in Barnsley today! Which of the Captain's albums could have caused a fierce reaction?

Answer: Lick My Decals Off, Baby

An avant-garde sixty-second television advert for "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" was once banned by the Los Angeles based KTTV channel. The decision seemed to be down to one man, Charles Young, KTTV station manager. He thought the ad was "crude and did not want it on my air".

He also found the title of the album "obscene". The advert has since been accepted into the Museum Of Modern Art, in New York. The Angel Brothers are an Indian influenced South Yorkshire group. Ian McMillan has, at various times, been appointed poet-in-residence for the diverse entities that are Barnsley Football Club, Northern Spirit Trains and Humberside Police Force!
6. In September 2003, Chicago blues guitarists Steve Arvey and Blues Move recorded a live concert. The venue was The Blues of the Month Club in an English Humberside town. An improvised instrumental track on the subsequent album bore the name of the place concerned. What is the track?

Answer: Cleethorpian Sunset

I'm not sure how many people in Cleethorpes realise their town has a tune dedicated to them. The other three titles are inventions of mine.
7. In 1973, Kevin Ayers released "Oh! Wot a Dream". This song was inspired by, sung in the manner of, and dedicated to an English eccentric and former member of Pink Floyd. The style of one line from this song, "I met you floating while I was boating", might give a clue to who was the inspiration. Who was the inspiration?

Answer: Syd Barrett

Kevin Ayers could be described as an English eccentric too. "Oh! Wot a Dream" was a track on "Bananamour", released on Harvest Records. The same record label was home to the late Syd Barrett's two solo albums ("Barrett" and "The Madcap Laughs") following his departure from Pink Floyd.
8. Following his departure from The Georgia Satellites, Dan Baird formed a new band. Two ex-members of the Satellites, Keith Christopher and Mauro Magellan, joined him. The fourth recruit was Jason and The Scorchers guitarist Warner Hodges. What was the name of this new group?

Answer: Dan Baird & Homemade Sin

The Georgia Satellites themselves reformed with original members Ricky Richards and Kenny Price involved. Alongside Homemade Sin, Dan Baird has been a member of a more country oriented group, The Yahoos.
9. Somewhere in The Beatles lyrics on the "Abbey Road" album there is a ten bob note. Where is it?

Answer: Up the nose of Mean Mr. Mustard

A ten bob note was a, sterling currency, ten shilling note. The decimalised equivalent being 50 pence. All the options given can be found on the "Abbey Road" album lyrics. The place to find the cash though is in one of Mr Mustard`s nostrils.
10. "Intro and Outro" was a track on the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band's album "Gorilla". Throughout this song Vivian Stanshall introduces various musicians and their instruments starting off with the Bonzos themselves then bringing in some more surprising guest artists. Something more suited to Roy Ayers was supposedly played by Adolf Hitler! On what instrument did Adolf join in the fun?

Answer: Vibes

Amongst many others we hear John Wayne on xylophone and Princess Anne grappling with a Sousaphone. This three minute track could support a quiz all of its own!
A shortened version on the "Do Not Adjust Your Set" television show introduced future Pythons Michael Palin on garden rake, Eric Idle on temple bells and Terry Jones on toast.
Vivian Stanshall conspired with big friend Keith Moon on more than one occasion in what they referred to as "trouser testing". Both entered a tailors and asked for a pair of strong trousers. They then proceeded to take a leg each and to tug and pull at the trousers "to test its quality" till, inevitably, they would tore in half. While the tailor stood there absolutely fuming and protesting a one-legged actor they paid entered the store and claimed the trousers were "just what I'm was looking for, I'll take two pairs". All this and much more they considered to be performance art.
11. One English musical legend was reported to have said "Ian McLagen has been in two great bands" meaning The Small Faces and The Faces. Ian McLagen responded "Well he's obviously never heard of The Bump Band because I've been in three great bands!". Who was the less informed person who got themselves in a jam with their comment?

Answer: Paul Weller

In the '60s and '70s, Ian McLagen was keyboards player with both The Small Faces and The Faces. He moved to Austin, Texas from England. In 1994 he formed The Bump Band with prominent local musicians. If you see them live you will be treated to fine songs and good musicianship. Additionally there is usually a fount of good stories from Ian in between numbers.
12. In 2009, Nate Campany & The Serenade released an EP consisting of four songs. "The Only Bridge I Need" was the title of the recording. The cover artwork showed a bridge, designed by John Augustus Roebling, which connects Brooklyn and Manhattan. Which bridge is this?

Answer: Brooklyn Bridge

The Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge connect Brooklyn to Queens. All the others connect Brooklyn and Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge being the only one designed by John Augustus Roebling. Originally from Ohio, Nate Campany was resident in Brooklyn when he made this recording.
The EP project was sponsored by about a hundred people who all got a credit on the inner cover.
13. Jesus H. Christ & The Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse-- In 2006, this New York group released a self-titled album. The first track (which I won't give the name of as its a family website) deals with the notion that Connecticut is tedious and explains there is only one enjoyable thing you can do there. "We live in the dullest state package stores all close at eight malls are full of ---------- and restaurants we all hate" Besides hateful restaurants, what does the blanked lyric indicate helps the view that Connecticut life as so very boring?

Answer: Optometrists

Working in an opticians shop for many years this is the only time I've heard them mentioned in song! If anyone has any other examples I'd be glad to hear. This was their second album.
14. A Ry Cooder song, "Johnny Cash" gives the thoughts of a man who hero worships the late singer. This person's adulation causes him to take one event very misguidedly. What does this man do, or think of doing, as a result.

Answer: Shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die

"So if you're going to Folsom Prison I want to go there too
I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die"

Its not quite clear from the song lyrics if this action was supposedly carried out or just an unfollowed thought. It is clear he doesn't realise Johnny is only in there performing his Folsom Prison Concert for the inmates! The song is from the 2009 Ry Cooder album "I, Flathead (The Songs of Kash Buk and the Klowns)". The album comes complete with a book.
15. Ivor Cutler's monologue "Fremsley" is a heart-rending tale of Fremsley the Sparrow. He seeks out Ivor for help when in fear for his life from predators. Ivor agrees to aid him and successfully saves him from the unwelcome attention of which likely threats?

Answer: An aristocrat and his two slavering dogs

Ivor saves him and takes him home. Unfortunately for Fremsley there is a twist in the tale. The late Ivor Cutler was a Scottish writer, songwriter and poet.
His humour, and delivery of it was droll, surreal, and quite unique.
