8. "Youth Genre Defect"

There may have been a "genre defect", as STYX appeared to be losing traction with the youth. However, STYX's older fans were abundant enough to make this album a success. Hits included "Show Me The Way" and the very un-STYX sounding "Love Is The Ritual".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "This engineer strips" If this is true, it must have been one wild recording session! This "slithery" STYX album was released in 1973.

Answer: The Serpent Is Rising

"The Serpent Is Rising" is one of two studio albums released in '73. The other was "STYX II".
2. "Crimson aflame" While flames do appear on the covers of "Big Bang Theory", "Rockers", and "Equinox", there are no flames on this album cover, which was the only album STYX released in 1974.

Answer: Man Of Miracles

"Man Of Miracles" was the last studio album STYX released on the Wooden Nickel label.
3. "Tall, sly crab" This was the first release to feature Tommy Shaw as a member of STYX.

Answer: Crystal Ball

Tommy Shaw performed the title track on this album. It was initially written by Tommy before he joined STYX. The band then revised it a bit, or "STYX-i-fied" it as Dennis Deyoung once said.
4. "Longhaired Insult" The band was loghaired, but the album was far from insulting! This 1977 studio classic set the stage for STYX's success of the late-seventies and early-eighties.

Answer: The Grand Illusion

The ballad-to-rocker "Come Sail Away" became a runaway hit in a string of hits. STYX would eventually be named America's favorite band in various polls between 1979 and 1981.
5. "Crooner Nest" This anagram might be an accurate way of describing this studio album, which featured some great ballads. It was released in 1979.

Answer: Cornerstone

"Cornerstone" followed "Pieces Of Eight" and was the third-consecutive STYX album to go triple-platinum.
6. "Easter parade hit" I don't think this studio album had anything to do with Easter parades, but it was a hit. It contains such classics as "Rockin' the Paradise", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Best Of Times", and "Snowblind".

Answer: Paradise Theatre

"Paradise Theatre" was, perhaps, where STYX peaked in popularity. The next album saw a huge drop in sales, although it was still a multi-million seller, and STYX later went on extended hiatus. They have yet to recapture their popularity of 1981.
7. "Who's Erik Early"? I don't know who Erik Early is, but this concept album will tell you who Robert Orin Charles Kilroy is. You may also learn of Dr. Righteous, in a future where Congress has usurped our free speech, and robots have usurped our humanity.

Answer: Kilroy Was Here

"Kilroy Was Here" was the fifth-consecutive STYX album to go multi-platinum, but did not live up to the triple-platinum expectation set by the previous four: "The Grand Illusion", "Pieces Of Eight", "Cornerstone", and "Paradise Theatre".
8. "Youth Genre Defect" There may have been a "genre defect", as STYX appeared to be losing traction with the youth. However, STYX's older fans were abundant enough to make this album a success. Hits included "Show Me The Way" and the very un-STYX sounding "Love Is The Ritual".

Answer: Edge Of The Century

This was the first Tommy Shaw-less album since 1975's "Equinox", but perfect vocal match, Glen Burtnik filled in beautifully.
9. "New Verbal Word" This 1999 studio album was the last to feature the DeYoung-Shaw-Young lead vocal trio.

Answer: Brave New World

The aftermath of this album included DeYoung being left off the tour and replaced by Gowan, a lawsuit, and an out of court settlement that denied DeYoung the STYX trademark but gave him the right to use the phrases "Performs the music of STYX" and "Formerly of STYX" in his promotions.
10. "Thin, gabby ogre" This 2005 studio album was the first to feature Ricky Phillips on bass. I don't know how gabby he is, but I'm sure he's no ogre!

Answer: Big Bang Theory

Every song on this album is a classic rock cover tune and none adheres to the STYX style, including the only STYX song on the album, "Blue Collar Man". Beatles remake, "I Am The Walrus" is the real stand-out track on this one!
