Question 1 of 10
1. Both Anika Moa and Bic Runga have been very successful outside of their homeland of New Zealand, but while Bic was born into a decidedly musical family, Anika's upbringing was much less harmonious (in a number of ways). With her father leaving Anika and her mother Bernie when Anika was young, it was down to Bernie Moa to raise and nurture her child's talents.

At the age of fifteen, however, Anika had her first big break. After taking part in (and winning) a famous music contest in New Zealand, Anika was given a multi-million dollar recording contract with Warner Music, and was whisked away to New York. What was the name of this music competition?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. After leaving America and returning to her native New Zealand, Anika went on to produce her second album. Her dislike of the United States, however, was well documented. So much so, in fact, that she included a song on her debut album, "Thinking Room", chronicling her time there. What is the name of the track, and what city does it describe? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Unfortunately, Anika's music is not enjoyed by all. Her famous open-air concert at Aotea Square was featured on the American talk-show, "60 Minutes", and was harshly snubbed by a fellow artist, who, surprisingly, was not American. Which well established singer-songwriter criticised young Anika's concert style? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. When her first album came out in New Zealand, Anika Moa did very well. The three singles she released all broke the Top 20 in the country's music charts, and her album hovered in the Top Ten for some time. Which of the following was not one of the singles released from Anika's debut album, "Thinking Room"? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Linking Bic Runga and Anika Moa together isn't difficult - both produce a similar style of music, both write and sing their own songs, and both are very happy to collaborate with each other, as is mentioned later in this quiz. Ignoring her collaboration with Bic for the moment, which of the following bands did Anika not collaborate with between her debut in 1999 and the release of her second album in 2005? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. So by now, you know all of this about Anika Moa, her life, her past, and her musical history. Now to link her to Bic Runga. Well, while Bic chose to work on Anika's second album "Stolen Hill" as a backing vocalist, Anika chose to fill a similar role in one of Bic's albums. Which album did Anika provide vocals for, though? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Bic Runga comes from a very musical background, as it happens. Her mother, Sophia Tang, and her father, Joseph Runga, met while Joseph was on leave in Malaysia from Vietnam. Which of the following members of Bic's family have not been involved in music, though? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. In a similar vein to Anika Moa, Bic also entered a famous New Zealand music contest with her singing partner, Kelly Horgan. What name did the singing duo enter this contest under? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Although they didn't win the contest, Bic and Kelly received a recording contract with Pagan Records. She soon become unsatisfied with the direction her music was moving in, however, and dropped Kelly to pursue her solo career. After she sent a demo of her first song, "Drive" to Sony, they signed her immediately.

While Anika Moa succumbed to the pressure before finally moving away from her overbearing record company, Bic Runga was far quicker on the uptake. Sony made her re-record the song using more instruments, but Bic used the demo she sent on the actual album. She really got the last laugh when the demo version of the song won her an award. What award?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. This has to be the final comparison between the two singers, and although I hate to do it (because both artists are fantastic, in my opinion), it has to come down to record sales in New Zealand. Although Bic and Anika release in very different ways (Anika sticks to Australasia, while Bic releases worldwide), comparing their success in New Zealand is difficult - both seem to be much loved national heroines! Which artist, however, found themselves the creator of the biggest selling album of 2002 in New Zealand?

Answer: (Two Words (A Name))

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Smokefree Rockquest

Smokefree Rockquest, or Rockquest as it was known prior to the sponsorship by New Zealand company Smokefree, is an annual contest held in Christchurch for children of secondary school age. Since the first contest was held in 1988, the content has grown, and now there are 22 regional finals in both North and South Island.

This culminates in the final contest, past winners of which have been Evermore and Neil Robinson.
2. After leaving America and returning to her native New Zealand, Anika went on to produce her second album. Her dislike of the United States, however, was well documented. So much so, in fact, that she included a song on her debut album, "Thinking Room", chronicling her time there. What is the name of the track, and what city does it describe?

Answer: "Everything's The Same" - New York

Although Warner Music had big commercial plans for Anika, she fought against them and soon ended up back in her homeland of New Zealand. Her brash, down to Earth personality is often blamed for this, although Anika's music can hardly be considered commercial.

Although she was signed by the prestigious Atlantic Records while in America, she soon decided to base herself back in New Zealand, and now releases under the Wea Music brand.

Answer: Alanis Morisette

Since the criticisms, Anika has stuck to conducting small concerts, mainly in pubs, with only herself and her acoustic guitar. Such concerts have been held all over the world, including in Britain, where she toured with Bic Runga. Her tour around the pubs of New Zealand in September 2006, almost sold out.
4. When her first album came out in New Zealand, Anika Moa did very well. The three singles she released all broke the Top 20 in the country's music charts, and her album hovered in the Top Ten for some time. Which of the following was not one of the singles released from Anika's debut album, "Thinking Room"?

Answer: My Son

As well as releasing the aforementioned three singles from her debut album, Anika also released two tracks from her follow up album, "Stolen Hill". The singles were the tracks "In The Morning" and "Wrestled With Your Angles", and although they did well in the charts, Anika never released the title track from her second album.

As well as producing albums, Anika Moa also DJs under the pseudonym of DJ Unika.

Answer: Tim Finn and Dave Dobbyn

Tim Finn and Dave Dobbyn, of course, were the pair that Bic Runga collaborated with to produce the album "Together in Concert: Live". Anika joined Dimmer as main vocalist on one album and a tour, and was also an important addition to the Greenpeace album, which commemorated the twentieth anniversary of the bombing of the ship "Rainbow Warrior".

Answer: Birds

"Birds", Bic Runga's third album, was released in 2006 in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and New Zealand. The UK release of the album featured the bonus track "Somewhere in the Night", and also saw the tracks placed in a different order. An interesting side note here - instead of lyrics, the booklet that comes with the album contains pictures of four of New Zealand's birds.

These were the tui, the kiwi, the koekoea, and the huia.
7. Bic Runga comes from a very musical background, as it happens. Her mother, Sophia Tang, and her father, Joseph Runga, met while Joseph was on leave in Malaysia from Vietnam. Which of the following members of Bic's family have not been involved in music, though?

Answer: Her father, Joseph

Sophia Tang was a lounge singer, and so encouraged all of her children to follow in the same vein. Boh and Pearl have both had successful musical careers, and have featured on more than one of Bic's albums. Bic's name, Chinese is origin, is pronounced "Beck", as Bic explains.

"You say it Bec, rather than Bic. It's Chinese, it's a strange vowel sound which doesn't seem to translate in Australia. It means the colour of jade, which I suppose is just green."
8. In a similar vein to Anika Moa, Bic also entered a famous New Zealand music contest with her singing partner, Kelly Horgan. What name did the singing duo enter this contest under?

Answer: Love Soup

Bic and Kelly didn't reach the same dizzy heights as Anika Moa, however, and they only placed third in the Smokefree Rockquest. Bic may have had the last laugh, however, as while Anika's music career has been turbulent at best, Bic's has been much smoother. Anika has also tended to keep her album releases in Australasia, while Bic releases worldwide and has had songs used in soundtracks.
What award?

Answer: Silver Scroll Songwriting Award

"Drive", which is also the title of Bic's debut album, entered the Top Ten of New Zealand's singles chart. The album also introduced the song "Sway", which made it to number one in both New Zealand and Ireland, and was used in the hit film "American Pie". The album itself also went to number one in New Zealand - a success by anyone's reckoning.

Interesting side note - Bic has recorded two songs called "Drive" in her career - the first was her solo hit, and the other was when she collaborated with Stawpeople for a cover of the 1984 hit by The Cars.

Answer: Bic Runga

"Beautiful Collision" was released in 2002, went straight into the album charts at number one, and became the best selling album of that year overnight. "Birds", Bic's follow up album, has almost reached the same dizzy heights - it has now gone three times platinum and has gleaned two top 30 singles.

So there we go - Anika Moa and Bic Runga, both popular singer-songwriters in their home land and, indeed, around the world. Their lives, their pasts, and most importantly, their music. I wouldn't like to say myself, so I ask you. Who do you think has been the most successful? And is there much to choose between the two?
