Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A lot of strange creatures make their appearance in the John Lennon song, 'I Am The Walrus'. In that tune, custard is said to be dripping from what?

Answer: a dead dog's eye

You have to applaud the alliteration and sibilence in this tune. Lennon also has provided a sensual panorama. Taste, sight, sound... this song has it all. ("Yellow matter custard." Yum.) The song is from the album 'Magical Mystery Tour'.
2. In the song, 'I Am The Walrus', John Lennon sang about a creature 'climbing up the Eiffel Tower'. What was this bizarre entity?

Answer: semolina pilchard

Semolina is a type of milled flour, used primarily for the making of pasta. A pilchard is a small fish of the herring family. Pilchards are commonly referred to as sardines.
3. With John Lennon on lead vocal for the song 'Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite', who did he tell us danced the waltz?

Answer: Henry the Horse

The song hails from the album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. The cover of this album is fantastic. It is a kind of wax-works cornucopia of music, magic and madness. The credits for the cover include "Wax figures by Madame Tussauds'.
4. Which of the following (animal-like) words describes the burning vessel "of real fire" the performers must leap through in the John Lennon song 'Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite'? (It is an old fashioned unit of measure.)

Answer: a hogshead

A hogshead is a large (usually wooden) cask. The term also refers to liquid (and dry) measure. A hogshead is roughly equivalent to 50 gallons. In the song, the image is that of someone leaping through a flaming barrel.
5. John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band released an album in 1975. It contained, among others, the songs 'Imagine', 'Whatever Gets You Through the Night', and 'Give Peace a Chance'. What is the title of this album?

Answer: Shaved Fish

Phil Spector helped to produce most of the songs on the album. John's green card, allowing him to live and work in the United States, is pictured on the album's cover.
6. Identify the 'tasty' John Lennon song from the album 'Shaved Fish'.

Answer: Cold Turkey

Anyone remember the sixties? Hot Tuna was a band formed from the breakup of the original Jefferson Airplane. It was fronted by Jorma Kaukonen, with Bob Steeler on drums and Jack Casady on bass.
7. On the Beatles 'White Album', one of John's songs told us that everyone had something to hide. (Everyone, that is, except for John and what type of animal?)

Answer: Monkey

I wore out two copies of this fantastic album -- the first one by spinning the disc backwards. (You were supposed to hear such things as "I buried Paul", and "Paul is Dead". Same thing with the album 'Abbey Road'. There was supposed to be 'evidence' that Paul McCartney was in fact dead, and an impostor substituted. (See also the much ado about this subject with references to the bare feet on Abbey Road; the 'Walrus' as a symbol of death; and the black flower in Paul's lapel in a photograph illustrating the album 'Magical Mystery Tour'.
8. On the Beatles 'White Album', John Lennon sings lead on the song 'The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill'. In this tune, Bill is out hunting for which animal?

Answer: Tiger

And as the lyrics state: in case of accidents, Bill always took his mom.
9. The John Lennon song 'Yer Blues' has always been a favorite of mine. In this tune, what creature 'picks' John's eye?

Answer: Eagle

This song contains a great deal of pain. Lonliness and the sense of death pervade the song. This stuff comes from deep inside. (You can easily read into the song the problems within the Beatles -- as a band and as friends.)
10. In the John Lennon song, 'I Am The Walrus', what creature was "singing Hare Krishna"?

Answer: Penguin

It was an 'elementry' (sic) penguin.
'Magical Mystery Tour' is a fine album. It contains 'Strawberry Fields Forever', 'Baby You're a Rich Man', and of course, 'I Am the Walrus'.
Thank you, John.
