Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sakura Saku" is the opening theme of what anime series?

Answer: Love Hina

"Love Hina" became one of the most popular anime series created in the year 2000, and is still adored by many fans. The comic (manga) has continued admist the end of the anime show.
2. When "Saint Seiya" kicked off in 1986, which song was its opening theme?

Answer: Pegasus Fantasy

"Saint Seiya" was the BIG thing before the creation of "Ranma 1/2", "Dragonball", and "Sailormoon". It graced all of Europe and parts of South America, and is still remembered by the people who got to enjoy it in all the languages it was translated into. I was only 2 years old when it came out!
3. Which band wrote the second opening theme for "The Prince of Tennis"?

Answer: Hiro-X

"Prince of Tennis" is a new anime from 2001. This song, in its second season, gave it a hook for gaining new fans.
4. What was the ending theme for the movie "Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz"?

Answer: White Reflection

"White Reflection" was the third theme song for "Gundam W" by the techno-pop band Two-Mix, who was huge in contributing music to the series.
5. True or false: Yoko Kanno made the soundtracks for "Macross Plus", "Cowboy Bebop", "Turn-A Gundam", and "Mononoke Hime".

Answer: False

Miyazaki has always partnered with his long-time composer partner, Joe Hisaishi, not Yoko. However, one must say that Yoko Kanno has revolutionized anime music by injecting jazz, orchestra, and just pure STYLE into many new works since her debut.
6. In "Evangelion", what classical song were the children playing in the movie "Death:Rebirth"?

Answer: Canon in D Major

Of all animes, "Evangelion" is the gospel of everything after it! So it is fitting that it used Pachelbel's famous "Canon in D Major" as its music.
7. Speaking of which, who was the composer for "Evangelion"?

Answer: Shiro Sagisu

Shiro Sagisu was the one who pioneered the soundtrack to back up the maelstrom that is "Evangelion". He went on to work with Hideaki Anno again for Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (Karekano). Rumours say that Hideaki and the comic creator of Karekano had a huge fight, which resulted in the story's being obscurely truncated at the last few episodes.
8. Who was the singer for the opening theme of "Boys Be", "Daijoubu"?

Answer: Aki Maeda

"Boys Be" was arguably the unsung hero of 1998. It was basically a journey through romance as time passes and seasons change. Aki Maeda sang both the opening and ending theme, anchoring the anime's lovely atmosphere; but the anime was only 13 episodes, and more or less unnoticed, as the comic moved on.
9. True or false: Makoto Shinkai wrote the music for the movie "Hoshi no Koe".

Answer: False

He didn't write the music, but he sure did a whole lot. When somebody tells you there's a new 30-minute anime movie, you'd wonder what lousy team wasted their time. Heck no.... Makoto Shinkai made "Hoshi no Koe" with his bare hands -- all the scripting, 3D programming, coloring, rendering, animating, and sound effects, all on his tiny little Macintosh computer loaded with expensive software.

He did the voices by himself with his wife. "Hoshi no Koe" took years to make, and he was named MVN of the year (most valuable newcomer). Animation companies are nuts over hiring this guy.
10. What was the ending theme of "Full Metal Panic" called?

Answer: Karenai Hana

Slow, sweet, and easy to play on the piano. The lyrics of this song had a lot of meaning packed into them. Although I've never learned Japanese, this song was very soothing for "Full Metal Panic". Fansubbers were so mad because FMP was licensed, (thus making their fansub encodes illegal), that they belayed that risk because it was one of the first few times a new anime playing in Japan was already agreed upon overseas for dubbing.
11. How many opening themes did "Escaflowne" have?

Answer: One

Yes, it only had one. People dispute the fact that "Escaflowne" was made before "Evangelion", when "Evangelion" was made in 1995, and "Escaflowne" was made in 1996. Staff members claim that pre-production for "Escaflowne" existed since 1992. Anyways, fans in general say that "Escaflowne" was an excellent follow-up to "Evangelion", being the ultimate fantasy story in its genre. Most people never miss this incredible classic, surpassing all fantasy genre animes before and after.
12. Who sang the ending, "Fly Me to the Moon", in "Evangelion" episode 1?

Answer: Utada Hikaru

Can you believe it??? I sure didn't. But do listen to it closely. Yes, I understand that many voice actors did their remixes, but as for the official one, Utada Hikaru actually sang it. To tell you the truth, only Utada Hikaru can pull off the English in that manner and with that smooth a voice. By the way, this song is one of my favorites.
13. Yuko Sasaki made the song "Pure Snow" for what anime?

Answer: Himikoden

It's one of those songs that retains today's quality and yesterday's sensuality. "Himikoden" itself did not become very popular, but many have their eyes set on "Saishu Heiki Kanojo" (Saikano), another delightful love story.
14. "Shaman King's" opening theme, "Over Soul," was sung by whom?

Answer: None of the above

"Shaman King" fans would know better. None of these people could sing that song like Megumi Hayashibara could. She has been something of a queen, making her mark with her unique singing style.
15. Osamu Tezuka's "Metropolis" featured which singer in the ending theme "There will never be Goodbye?"

Answer: Minako Obata

Tezuka came out of nowhere with his 4-year project, "Metropolis". It was a sight of grandeur for all to see, but many criticize the usage of his 60s character design in today's tour-de-force world.
16. Which singer in the English band BoA sang the opening theme for "Serial Experiments Lain"?

Answer: Jasmine Rodgers

Of all singers, this time it WAS the English one! Hehe... little is known about how Pioneer dug out Jasmine Rodgers to create the opening theme for one of the most enigmatic technological cyber-punk psycho-thriller of anime in 1998. Many "Evangelion" fans quickly picked up watching this to continue the personal journey of instrumentality and existence. Similarities have been spotted philosophically. Again, SEL is a must-see for the older groups.
17. Chiaki Ishikawa and See-Saw sang the opening theme, "Obsession", for which anime?

Answer: Hack Sign

"Hack Sign" has an awesome arsenal of minds working behind it. Kazunori Ito, the writer from "Ghost in the Shell", teams up with Koichi Mashimo, the animation head for "Popolocrois", and the ever famed Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, character designer for "Evangelion". "Hack Sign's" staff already is promoting its magnitude of success, as it continues in Japan for the rest of the year 2002.
18. Name the first opening theme of "Hikaru no Go".

Answer: Get Over

"Hikaru no Go" has inspired many people to take up the game of Go as a hobby.
19. True or false: Masami Okui sang the opening theme for "Digi Charat".

Answer: True

Masami Okui has had an amazing start to her career. She already has done songs for "Eretzvaju", "Tales of Eternia", and "Akihabara Dennougumi". Look out for her- she's got a load of talent.
20. Round Table and NINO joined together to create the new opening theme for which anime?

Answer: Chobits

"Chobits" Ladies and Gentlemen, CLAMP has done it again. That animation studio never gets away with making bad stuff. From "Magic Knights Rayearth", to "Card Captor Sakura", "X", "Angelic Layer", and now "Chobits", CLAMP has always done a good job with making the most of a manga into an anime. "Chobits" is being drooled over by many fans as it unfolds on TV.
21. "Dragonball GT's" first ending theme was called:

Answer: Hitori Janai

"Dragonball GT" was a decent sequel to the end of "Dragonball Z". The problem exists in whether Akira Toriyama sanctioned its continuation, as he died somewhere at the time "Dragonball GT" was in full swing. DBGT ended in 1997, and so it brings closure to the legacy of Toriyama-san, who may be regarded highly for a long time for his creations throughout the 90s.
22. True or false: "Kimi ni Nosete" was the ending theme of "Laputa: Castle in the Sky".

Answer: True

"Kimi ni Nosete" was sung by Azumi Inoue, a once-popular singer in her own right. Miyazaki always had his own affinity in making a touching movie that would last for ages. Most of his other prominent works include "Totoro", "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Porco Rosso", "Mononoke Hime", and his first one in 1986, "Nausicaa". For anime fans that grew up watching them, they may never forget the picture Miyazaki painted into their lives.
23. The Opening Theme of "Digimon 02" is

Answer: "Target"

What started as a rival to the classic "Tamagotchi" gave rise to a whole new paradigm in Digimon, the anime. Toei expended their latest efforts to push this series to rival the Pokemon craze that hit Japan years earlier. This song, by Wada Kouji, is one of several that he made for Digimon, all rock songs. His newest song for "Digimon Frontier" is a true stamp on his style.
24. The ending theme to "Star Ocean EX" is

Answer: Hearts

"Star Ocean EX" was poorly done in relation to what was being released at the same time in 2000. Enix overstressed CG animation, and all characters and backgrounds were left static and unlively compared to Miyazaki. The protagonist, Claude, is a typical adventurer cut out from classic epics, joined with a band of other RPG characters and a very cute female partner.

The anime was set for two seasons, but they cut production to focus on creating the new RPG, "Blue Sphere".
25. Maaya Sakamoto sang "Hemisphere" as the opening theme for what anime?

Answer: Rahxephon

"Hemisphere" was Maaya Sakamoto's new hit single for "Rahxephon". The anime so far is incredible. It has almost the same maturity as "Cowboy Bebop", and borrows from various Egyptian aspects, names, and designs. The robots, however, are near photocopies of Evangelions, with more features.
