Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Australian Crawl' were formed in what year?

Answer: 1978

Australian Crawl was formed in 1978 after James Reyne and Simon Binks' first band, Spliff Rouch, had broken up. The original line-up of Australian Crawl in 1978 was James Reyne (vocals), Simon Binks (lead guitar), Brad Robinson (rhythm guitar), Paul Williams (bass) and David Reyne (drums). David was replaced rather quickly by Bill McDonough.
2. Australian Crawl burst out of which Australian city?

Answer: Melbourne

The original members of Australian Crawl all hailed from the Mount Eliza region on the Mornington Penninsula, near Melbourne in Victoria.
3. What was Australian Crawl's debut single?

Answer: 'Beautiful People'

Signed by EMI Records, Australian Crawl were put into the studio with producer David Briggs. The sessions ended with the bands first single, 'Beautiful People', in November 1979. The song debuted at #22 in the Australian charts.
4. Australian Crawl's first album, 'The Boys Light Up', was released when?

Answer: April 1980

'The Boys Light Up', arguably the Crawls most successful album, reached #4, spent more than 50 weeks in the Top 30 charts, remained in the top 100 for an unbroken 104 weeks and eventually sold over 280,000 copies (five-times platinum).
5. James Reyne appeared on which TV show in 1980 with both his arms in plaster?

Answer: Countdown

Reyne had been hit by a car, leading him to writing the song 'Indisposed'.
6. The Crawl's second album, 'Sirocco', was named after what?

Answer: Errol Flynn's yacht

Produced by Peter Dawkins, and now featuring Guy McDonough as another songwriter, the album reach #1 in July 1981 and achieved four-times platinum. The album featured songs such as the hits 'Things Don't Seem', 'Errol' and 'Lakeside'.
7. The Crawl's third album, 'Sons of Beaches', was produced where?

Answer: Hawaii

Produced by ex-patriate Mike Chapman, 'Sons of Beaches' produced a rougher, rockier edge than the pop/rock of the bands first two highly successful albums. 'Sons of Beaches' still reach #1 in the Australian charts, but of the album's three singles, only 'Shutdown' had any impact on the charts.
8. With the departure of Bill McDonough in 1983, the Crawl returned in 1984 with the chilling song 'Reckless (Don't Be So...) and the album ____?

Answer: 'Semantics'

Both 'Semantics' and 'Reckless (Don't be so...)' both reached #1 on the albums and single's charts. Ex-Angles drummer Buzz Bidstrup was a replacement for McDonough, who had quit the band as tensions started to rise.
9. The bands final album, 'Between a Rock and a Hard Place' in 1985, was a financial disaster, costing $400,000 to produce, and left the band in a position aptly fitting the title of the album. What did the band have to do to pay off the debt?

Answer: Tour for a year

The album barely recorded a blip on the charts, reaching #12 for one week but was out of the top 40 within a fortnight. The album was poorly-produced and it was clear the Crawl had lost their way. It was no surprise that the band announced their official break-up in early 1986.
10. Time to test how well you know Austrailan Crawl lyrics:

In the corner of their living room
Beautiful people
The art-decor sonic boom'
11. 'Burke and Wills and camels, initials in the tree'

A hauntingly beautiful song:

'Feel like Scott of the Antarctic
Base camp too far away
A Russian sub beneath the Arctic
Burke and Wills and camels
Initials in the tree

She don't like that kind of behaviour
So thrown down your guns
Don't you be so reckless.'
12. 'To fish and hunt, to take a punt, the New Guinea Highlands'

Answer: 'Errol'

If you didn't already know, the song is dedicated to the swashbuckling Tasmanian actor, Errol Flynn.

'His mothers hand
He could not stand
He left for the island
To fish and hunt
To take a punt
The New Guinea Highlands
Oh Errol, I would give everything just to be like him.'
13. 'It seems all wrong back here at home, there's no end in sight.'

Repeated blow by blow'
15. 'When the children at the government schools send money for the poor.'

While the children at the government schools
