Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Back to June 1957: John Diefenbaker is elected Canada's thirteenth prime minister. Diefenbaker was in his sixties, singer and song writer Paul Anka was nearing his sixteenth birthday. He was too young to vote but old enough to chart: in August he had his first British number one. Can you tell me the song?

Answer: Diana

"I'm so young and you're so old this my darling I've been told
I don't care just what they say 'cause forever I will pray
you and I will be as free as the birds up in the trees
oh please stay by me Diana"

Anka was born in Ottawa of Syrian and Lebanese parents. He released his first single in 1956 and had his breakthrough with "Diana". "Diana" was the first British number one single by a Canadian artist. He went on to have a further string of hits and wrote some for other people, like "She's a Lady" for Tom Jones and the translation of "Comme d'habitude" - "My Way"- Frank Sinatra's famous trade mark.

Anka was introduced into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2005. Since 1990 he has been a US citizen.
2. In 1958 Paul Newman married Joanne Woodward and Tyrone Power, Deborah Ann Minardos. Both couples may have said that they found "My True Love". Which Canadian had a song called "My True Love" in that very same year?

Answer: Jack Scott

"I prayed to the Lord to send me a love
He sent me an angel from heaven above
The stars in the sky he placed in her eyes
She is my true love"

In 1936 Giovanni Domenico Scafone Jr was born close to the US border in Windsor, Ontario. When he was ten the family crossed the border and he then called a suburb of Detroit, Michigan his home. He became interested in music and his 1958 single "My True Love" was his first huge achievement. Not only on the American continent but also a number nine in Britain.

Since 2011 he is listed in the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
3. 1970 was the year of the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and Canadian William Smart won bronze in the 800 meters running event. Such speed might have helped the fugitive in the 1970 song by R. Dean Taylor. Which US state wanted to have him in one of their jails?

Answer: Indiana

"Indiana wants me, Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can't go back there
I wish I had you to talk to"

Richard Dean Taylor was born in 1939 in Toronto, Ontario. His story about a guy who killed someone because he insulted his woman reached a British number two. He was inspired by the movie "Bonnie and Clyde".

No wonder the guy was caught at the end of the song: singing when you're on the run attracts attention.
4. "And Now for Something Completely Different" was a Monty Python film released in 1971. There is a distinct connection to Canada due to the wonderful "Lumberjack Song", about a young man searching for luck as a lumberjack in Canadian woods. Neil Young was also searching for something in 1971. He was looking for a...

Answer: Heart of Gold

"I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold"

Neil Young was born in 1945 in Toronto, Ontario. Despite his long and distinguished list of hits on his side of the Atlantic, this was the only top ten hit he ever had in Great Britain. Not their cup of tea.

A "Silver Dream Machine" belonged to David Essex, the "Combine Harvester" to the Wurzels. And the bridge was built by Simon & Garfunkel.
5. 1974 was the year of the second election of Pierre Trudeau as Canadian Prime Minister. The meaning of Pierre (Peter) is "rock" - and voilà: There was a song called "Rock Me Gently" in 1974! Which Canadian with the same home town as Trudeau sang it?

Answer: Andy Kim

"Mmm
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don't you know"

Andy Youakim was born in 1952 in Montreal, Quebec, more than thirty years after Trudeau. In the year 1974 he had already been working some time under the name of Andy Kim. In 1969 "Baby, I Love You" was even a number one in Canada.

His 1974 song "Rock Me Gently" was his only single to ever make it in the British charts, peaking at number two.
6. April the 5th 1974 saw the passing away of Canadian A.Y. Jackson, a famous painter from the "Group of Seven". April the 6th 1974 saw "Seasons in the Sun", a song about a man dying in the spring, sung by Canadian Terry Jacks on the number one spot in the UK. But what is the original French title?

Answer: Le Moribond

"We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were just seasons
Out of time..."

Terry Jacks was born in 1944 in Winnipeg. While a songwriter himself, his greatest hit was a cover version: "Seasons in the Sun" released in 1973 and a number one in 1974 in Canada, USA and the UK.

"Le Moribond" was written by Belgian Jacques Brel in 1961. It was translated by Rod McKuen into English. Before Jacks the Kingston Trio and the Fortunes tried their luck with the song.

While "Le Moribond" was a cynical good-bye of a dying man laced with vinegar, Jack's version was dripping with syrup. A very tearful and forgiving good-bye - but this might be the reason for the success of the song.
7. April 2nd 1976 was the day of birth of Pattie Mallette, who later in her life gave birth to Justin Bieber. In June 1976 a song about a mother dealing with the mercurial demands of her little son warmed the hearts of mothers in the UK. Who did this heartfelt rendition of "No Charge"?

Answer: J. J. Barrie

"For the nine months I carried you
Growin' inside me - No charge
For the nights I've sat up with you
Doctored you, and prayed for you - No charge"

Ontario born J.J. Barrie was already in his forties when "No Charge" enchanted the Brits. They even made it a chart topper. Later in his life Barry mainly worked in the movie business.

"No Charge", written by Harlan Howard, has been done by numerous other artists, male and female. You might hear it in the voice of Johnny Cash, Melba Montgomery or - Billy Connolly. In his case, under the title of "No Change" and instead of a little boy and his mum is the song about a married couple. And that's not the only difference.

J.M. Barrie was the author of "Peter Pan", J.R. Ewing was the main bad boy of "Dallas".
8. Canada on March 13 1989: A geomagnetic storm caused a major blackout across Quebec, leaving millions without electricity for several hours. Also in March 1989 Alannah Myles released a self titled album. One single of this album would turn out to be a British number two in spring 1990. Can you please give me the title? Think of something dark...

Answer: Black Velvet

"Black velvet and that little boy's smile.
Black velvet with that slow southern style.
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees.
Black velvet if you please."

Alannah Myles was born on Christmas 1958 in Toronto, Ontario. She started singing at the age of nine years. "Black Velvet" was recorded in 1988, released in 1989 and charted in the UK in 1990. They must have transported the records via a paddle boat from Canada to Britain.
9. One of the big movies of 1991 was "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", Robin being once again not played by a Britisher but an American: Kevin Costner. The big song of 1991 was the title track from this movie, done by a Canadian: Bryan Adams. Do you know it?

Answer: (Everything I Do) I Do It for You

"Don't tell me it's not worth trying for
You can't tell me it's not worth dying for
You know it's true, everything I do, I do it for you"

I've got to mention that the best part of the movie- which is usually the villain- was done by an Englishman, Alan Rickman. He got an Oscar for it.

"(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" did well for Adams, born 1959 in Kingston (Ontario): a number one in nearly all major pop charts, gold and platinum records.

Adams is also a keen and prosperous photographer.
10. 1993 saw the first female Prime Minister of Canada: Kim Campbell. The power was hers for just a few months. It was also the year that Celine Dion slipped into the British charts and got to number four.

Answer: The Power of Love

"Somewhere I've never been, sometimes I am frightened
But I'm ready to learn 'bout the power of love
Ooh, the power of love
The power of love"

Celine Dion was born 1968 in Quebec. The first time I noticed her was when she won the Eurovision Song Contest 1988 for Switzerland. "The Power of Love" was first released by Jennifer Rush in 1984.

Justin Bieber was born March 1, 1994. So the power of love must have worked for his parents in 1993.
