Bay City Rollers (1975-78) - My R&R Love Letter Quiz

When I was in junior high school, I had a huge crush on the Bay City Rollers. I once faked illness to stay home and watch them during their week-long appearance on the Mike Douglas Show! Anyway, I hope you enjoy my little quiz!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who were the group members in 1975--when the group first hit the charts in America?

Answer: Les, Alan, Derek, Stuart, Eric

The group's lineup at the time of their initial appearance on the American pop charts was Leslie McKeown (Les), (my favorite Roller), Alan Longmuir, Derek Longmuir (Alan's brother), Stuart Wood ("Woody"), and Eric Faulkner. Alan left the band, and he was replaced by Ian Mitchell. Ian left the band, and he was replaced by Patrick McGlynn. Nobby Clark was an original member when the band formed in 1970.
2. Where were the Rollers from?

Answer: Scotland

The Rollers hailed from Scotland--Edinburgh, to be exact, except for short-time member, Ian Mitchell, who was from Ireland.
3. It's well known how the Rollers got their name. They stuck a pin in a map of America and named themselves after the city in which the pin stuck. Where is the 'Bay City' they chose located?

Answer: Michigan

Being a native Texan, I'd like to say they stuck the pin in Bay City, Texas. But, alas, it was Bay City, Michigan that they named themselves after.
4. The Rollers had a very distinctive look, a sort of 'fashion statement'. What did they wear that set them apart?

Answer: clothing trimmed with tartan

Any true Roller fan knows that proper Roller attire was clothing trimmed with tartan--never plaid! They favored jackets, shirts and knicker-type pants trimmed with tartan, scarves and athletic shoes.
5. Who was Tam Paton?

Answer: The group's manager

Tam Paton, who was a former musician, was the group's manager. All things considered, it had to be a tough job!
6. The Rollers' first American hit was a popular tune about a particular night. Which one?

Answer: Saturday

Saturday Night (S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night) hit #1 in 1975 and started 'Roller Mania'.
7. This song, a follow-up to the monstrously successful "Saturday Night", was about something we all need. What?

Answer: Money Honey

Taken from the LP, "Rock and Roll Love Letter" (the U.S. version), "Money Honey" was a Top 10 hit.
8. This song was a 'remake' or 'cover' of a tune by legendary songstress, Dusty Springfield. Name it.

Answer: I Only Wanna Be With You

"I Only Wanna Be With You", one of my personal favorites, peaked at #9 on the Billboard Pop Chart.
9. This song, surprisingly, barely cracked the Top 40 Pop Chart. Its theme is radio-related. Name the song.

Answer: Dedication

"Dedication", the title song from their third U.S. album, peaked at # 40 on the Billboard Pop Chart. The album version had been recorded with Ian Mitchell on lead vocals. By the time the album was released, he'd quit the band. The new version, the single release, featured Les McKeown's vocals.
10. The Rollers had their own American television show.

Answer: True

According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), the Rollers had their own Saturday morning television show in the U.S. It was called "The Bay City Rollers Show", but it was also known as "The Krofft Superstar Hour with the Bay City Rollers". Only thirteen episodes of the early morning show were aired.

It was produced by legendary producers, Sid and Marty Krofft. (They also had a television show in Britain, "Shang-A-Lang."
