1. What non-Beatle contributed lyrics to the song "Yellow Submarine"?

Answer: Donovan Leitch

2. What John Lennon-penned song became a number one hit in the U.K. for Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas in July, 1963?

Answer: Bad To Me

Lennon wrote "Bad To Me" while on a holiday in Spain with Brian Epstein. Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas were another act managed by Epstein. The lyrics to the song were written by Lennon on the back of a matchbook, and this is how Lennon gave them to Kramer.
3. What was the only song in which only Paul and George were listed as authors?

Answer: In Spite Of All The Danger

"In Spite Of All The Danger" was written by Paul and George and recorded in 1958 by the Quarrymen. The track appears on the "Anthology I" CD.
4. What song, written by Paul McCartney, became a number seven hit in the U.K. in 1964 for Cilla Black?

Answer: It's For You

"It's For You" was written by Paul. Cilla Black had been a part-time cloakroom attendant at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, an early Beatles' venue. John Lennon heard her sing and introduced her to Brian Epstein, and Epstein signed her. Paul played piano on the track.
5. What UK number one John Lennon song has only he and Paul playing on the recording?

Answer: The Ballad Of John And Yoko

John wrote "The Ballad Of John And Yoko" while on his honeymoon with Yoko in Paris. He wanted to record it and release it right away, but George was on holiday, and Ringo was away making the film "The Magic Christian." So he and Paul played all the instruments. John did the lead vocal and played lead guitar, acoustic guitar, and percussion. Paul does harmony vocal and plays bass, drums, piano and maracas.
6. What's the only song that lists John and George as the authors?

Answer: Cry For A Shadow

"Cry For A Shadow" was an instrumental written by John and George in 1961 and recorded on June 22 of that year while The Beatles were in Hamburg. It appears on the "Anthology I" CD. The drummer on the track is Pete Best.
7. What was the first song credited as being written by all four Beatles: John, Paul, George and Ringo?

Answer: Flying

"Flying" is an instrumental tune that appears on the album "Magical Mystery Tour." It is credited as Harrison/Lennon-McCartney/Starkey. It was recorded on 8 September 1967.
8. For the release of the Beatles' "Anthology" compilation in 1995-96, the Beatles released two "new" songs ("Free As A Bird" and "Real Love"), which were actually songs that John Lennon had written in the late 1970s. They also considered doing two other songs by Lennon from that period for the Anthology series. What were they?

Answer: "Now and Then" and "Grow Old With Me"

Lennon's "Grow Old With Me" required too much work to bring it up to snuff for release. George, Paul and Ringo did begin work on "Now And Then", but then George decided he didn't want to do it. Either he didn't like the song, or too many verses needed to be written to finish it.

There has been some talk lately that Paul and Ringo might finish "Now And Then" and release it, including George's guitar work and Lennon's vocal.
9. What Paul McCartney song was written as a reaction to racial tensions that were escalating in the U.S.?

Answer: Blackbird

Paul wrote, "You were only waiting for this moment to arise." He said this line from Blackbird "was about, you know, the black people's struggle in the southern states, and I was using the symbolism of a blackbird."
10. What Paul McCartney song was interpreted by Charles Manson as a coded prophecy for a coming racial war?

Answer: Helter Skelter

A helter skelter is what they call a sliding board in England. But Manson believed it was predicting a race war--the apocalypse. Los Angeles D.A. Vincent Bugliossi, who led the prosecution of Manson and his followers, named his best-selling book about their murders after the song--Helter Skelter.
