Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which song from the album "Please, Please Me" was written with the intent to give to British singer Helen Shapiro to record?

Answer: Misery

The Beatles wrote several songs for other artists. This song in particular was turned down by an executive before Helen Shapiro even saw it. It was given to Kenny Lynch, another British singer. He was the first non-Beatle to record a Lennon/McCartney song.
2. This song was inspired by Chuck Berry. It was given to The Rolling Stones, who had a minor hit with it. Name the song.

Answer: I Wanna Be Your Man

One day Paul and John had encountered Andrew Olham, the Stones manager. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had not begun to write yet, and Oldham was looking for a song for the Stones next single. Paul suggested "I Wanna Be Your Man". The Stones recorded it and it helped catapult the Stones into the spotlight.
3. This song is a re-writing of the song "It Won't Be Long". Name the song.

Answer: Any Time At All

Re-writing of songs was not something The Beatles did often. The only songs that have been re-written are; "Yes It Is" was a re-write of "This Boy", "Paperback Writer" was a re-write of "Day Tripper", and "Get back was a re-write of "Lady Madonna".
4. This song was partly inspired after hearing "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". It was one of John's first attempts of writing from within. Name the song.

Answer: I'm A Loser

"I'm A Loser" was also inspired by John's meeting Kenneth Allsop. Allsop was a journalist in England who interviewed John about his book "In His Own Write". Allsop also spoke to John about his songwriting, advising him not to hide his true feelings but to express himself through song.
5. This song Paul had written long before it was recorded. It was dubbed "Auntie Gin's Theme". Name the song.

Answer: I've Just Seen A Face

After the death of Paul's mother, Jim McCartney's sisters were a big help around the McCartney home. His Aunt Gin loved that song so much that that is why Paul called it "Auntie Gin's Theme".
6. This is the first Beatles song not to be about a relationship. Name the song.

Answer: Nowhere Man

As the story goes, John had been up for hours trying to write new material for the Beatles next album. He was coming to a dead end so he decided to take a bit of a break. He laid down for a bit and thought he was a nowhere man sitting in a nowhere land. And that, as they say, is history.
7. This song was inspired by the Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream". Name the song.

Answer: Good Day Sunshine

Paul wrote this song at John's house on a very sunny day. While Paul was inspired by the Lovin' Spoonful, they were inspired to write "Daydream" by songs like "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Baby Love" by the Supremes. Quite the circle, huh!
8. This song was a spontaneous singalong that made it onto an album because Pattie Harrison liked it. Name the song.

Answer: Wild Honey Pie

The singalong occured while the Beatles were in Rishikesh to study with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
9. This song could very well be the oldest Lennon/McCartney song to be recorded by the Beatles. Name the song.

Answer: One After 909

The origins of this song go all the way back to the days at Frothlin Road, where John and Paul wrote hundreds of songs. "One After 909" was recorded in March 1963 but wasn't used then.
10. This song was inspired by Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp Minor, with the chords played backwards. Name the song.

Answer: Because

The story goes that John and Yoko were at home one day and Yoko was playing Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C Sharp, aka "Moonlight Sonata". John asked her to play it again only with the chords in reverse order.
