Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Shooby do wop, wop Shooby do wop, wop Shooby do wop, wop My blood-pumping organ is squallin', squallin' Socially isolated lubricated liquid in my eyes The cushioned support for my head is never without moisture..." Which of these Jackie Wilson songs was recorded and released in 1958?

Answer: Lonely Teardrops

"My heart is cryin' cryin', lonely teardrops
My pillow's never dry..."

This was one of Jackie Wilson's most recognized signature songs and it was the last song that he performed prior to his death in 1975. He collapsed from a heart attack on stage while singing it, falling into a coma, and eventually died of pneumonia nine years later in 1984.

Jackie Wilson's nickname in the music industry was "Mr. Excitement". Among the many tunes that he popularized are "That's Why (I Love You So); "Higher and Higher" and "I'll Be Satisfied".
2. "It's soon to be evident that I'm no fun at all I apologize. There are occasions when the pain gets so bad that I have to wail aloud; I feel quite solitary. I belong to you, you belong to me, you are exactly what you seem to be; You make things difficult." What was the name of this 1969 Crosby, Stills and Nash number that referred to Stephen Stills former girlfriend?

Answer: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes

"It's getting to the point
Where I'm no fun anymore
I am sorry
Sometimes it hurts so badly
I must cry out loud
I am lonely
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
You make it hard"

All of the choices given were songs by Crosby, Stills and Nash, but "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (an intended pun on Sweet Judy Blue Eyes), was a song written about Stephen Stills former girlfriend, Judy Collins. After she left him for actor Stacy Keach, Stills wrote this four-part medley about their former relationship.
3. "Out in this location in the meadows I struggle for my nourishment I apply the strength that I can muster in my back To eking out a living for myself. I have no need to use my fists In order to prove that I am correct There is no necessity for me to me to be forgiven." What was the name of this 1971 hit by The Who?

Answer: Baba O'Riley

"Out here in the fields,
I fight for my meals,
I get my back into my living.
I don't need to fight,
To prove I'm right,
I don't need to be forgiven."

Band member Pete Townsend originally had planned for the song "Baba O'Riley" to run at least 30 minutes in length, but it was eventually shortened considerably.
Many people have erroneously believed its title to be "Teenage Wasteland", because of a line in the song. Baba O'Riley derived its name from two major influences over The Who; a man named Meher Baba, who claimed to be God incarnate, and another man named Terrence Mitchell Riley, who was an American music composer.
4. Barbra Streisand sang this easy listening song that was featured in the film "A Star Is Born". Can you determine which of these tunes sung by her was based on the "lyrics" below? "Infatuation, fluffy as a comfortable snug seat Infatuation, sharp as the early part of the day's atmosphere. A singular adoration that is shared mutually by a pair of people I have discovered with you."

Answer: Evergreen

"Love soft as an easy chair
Love fresh as the morning air
One love that is shared by two
I have found with you

Like a rose under the April snow
I was always certain love would grow
Love ageless and evergreen
Seldom seen by two"

The hit "Evergreen" was composed by Barbra Streisand herself, with Paul Williams assisting with the lyrics.

In 1976, the song went to the top of the U.S. music charts and fared nearly as well in Britain the following year, missing the number one slot, but still landing at the number three position that year.
5. "'Little ones, mind your manners' Those are the words of advice we receive when we are hanging out with each other Also, 'Observe the way in which you enjoy your recreation'; Those folks just don't get it." Tommy James and the Shondells had a number four hit with this tune in 1967, but what song was this that Tiffany managed to hit number one with twenty years later?

Answer: I Think We're Alone Now

"Children, behave
That's what they say when we're together
And watch how you play
They don't understand"

Tommy James group formed in 1959 in Niles, Michigan, first as The Echoes, later as Tom and the Tornadoes, eventually settling on the name Tommy James and The Shondells. Tommy was the lead singer from the group's inception, belting out tunes at the age of 12!

Songwriter Ritchie Cordell provided them with both "I Think We're Alone Now and "Mirage" in 1967.
6. These rather redundant lyrics were ever so slightly redeemed by the upbeat music that accompanied them. "A'shatterin' stones in the heat of the day; I engaged the legal system in battle and the legal system was triumphant I engaged the legal system in battle and the legal system was triumphant I had a requirement for some cash because I didn't have any; I engaged the legal system in battle and the legal system was triumphant I engaged the legal system in battle and the legal system was triumphant." What group had a top ten hit in the U.S. with this one in 1966?

Answer: The Bobby Fuller Four

"A'breakin' rocks in the hot sun;
I fought the law and the law won,
I fought the law and the law won.
I needed money 'cause I had none;
I fought the law and the law won,
I fought the law and the law won."

The Bobby Fuller Four never had a definitive name; being referred to as Bobby Fuller and the Fanatics or just plain Bobby Fuller. He hailed from El Paso, Texas, and with a variety of fellow musicians at various times, he scored a number nine hit with "I Fought The Law" in 1966. The song had originally been sung by the Crickets (of Buddy Holly fame) and had been written by band member Sonny Curtis. In 1978, Hank Williams, Jr. took it to the number 15 position on the U.S. Country charts, and later still, in 1979 the Clash also hit the charts with the song.
7. "Intimate relationship is a flaming object And it causes a scalding-hot circle Enveloped by untamed want I stumbled headlong into a circle of burning coals." This 1963 melody by country singer Johnny Cash, often considered to be his signature song, was known by which of the following titles?

Answer: Ring Of Fire

"Love is a burning thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire."

"Ring Of Fire" was co-written by June Carter Cash (Johnny's second wife) and Merle Kilgore. While it had originally been recorded by Anita Carter, June's sister, it took Johnny Cash to push the song all the way up the country music charts, holding it at the number one slot for seven weeks in 1963.
8. Albert Hammond surprised us with this song about high expectations and poor results in 1972. "Took a flight on a jet airplane heading out west I did not really think things through; I merely acted impulsively All those remarks about taking advantage of circumstances, television stardom and the possibilities of being in films Sounded right; certainly sounded right." Which of the following titles would best reflect the jumbled lyrics above?

Answer: It Never Rains In Southern California

"Got on board a westbound seven forty seven
Didn't think before deciding what to do
All that talk of opportunities, TV breaks and movies
Rang true, sure rang true

Seems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya
It pours, man, it pours"

The song reflects the disappointments felt by a struggling actor as he finds a lack of success instead of the hoped-for "pot of gold at the end of the rainbow". It was co-written by Albert Hammond along with Mike Hazlewood.
9. "I am a utility repairman for the local government And I travel the major thoroughfares Checking for power surges while gazing into the sunlight I am able to hear you in the line I am able to determine your voice in the insulated wires And the workman from ----- continues to be on the wire." In what locale did Glen Campbell claim to be working in this 1968 hit?

Answer: Wichita Lineman

"I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload

I hear you singin' in the wire
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line"

Songwriter Jimmy Webb wrote this number one Country hit in the U.S. for Glen Campbell in 1968.
While considered to be a "country" tune, the song was able to crossover into the realms of rock, easy listening and even into the pop genres, defying efforts to categorize it.

The song was inspired by Webb as he traveled along a lonely stretch of Oklahoma highway, whereupon he spotted a lone utility worker high atop a pole making repairs. The solitude of the scene struck Jimmy Webb as poignant, and thus another song was born.

Jimmy Webb is a prolific songwriter, having written for such diverse folks as Glen Campbell, Joe Cocker, Dionne Warwick, Art Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra and Judy Collins, just to name a few!
10. "Glamour boy, glamour boy In what direction are you planning to travel? What individual is going to take you in? For a long, long time in your short life span You have been engaged in running around after the females They have no ability to ignore your advances and happy faces Uh-uhmm, they desire to have you Glamour boy, glamour boy." The Kinks AND Herman's Hermits both brought us this tune in 1966. What was the name of it?

Answer: Dandy

"Dandy, Dandy
Where you gonna go now?
Who you gonna run to?
All your little life
You're chasin' all the girls
They can't resist your smile
Uh-hmm, they long for
Dandy, Dandy"

Singer/songwriter Ray Davies of The Kinks wrote this song, and his group recorded it in 1966 on the album "Face To Face". Later that same year, Peter Noone along with Herman's Hermits recorded it as a single in North America and New Zealand, whereas The Kinks version was only released as a part of an album. Another group, The Rockin' Vicars also released their version of it in the same year.
