Boomers Ascending 3 The Fractured Fact Years Quiz

This quiz has some fringe and cringe worthy entries. It's R&B biased purely by accident. Some tough questions like, "Does free will really exist?" and "How do you know you are not dreaming right now?" Facts aren't always.

Question 1 of 10
1. I couldn't sleep at all last night so I decided to work on this next fabulous Boomer installment. I had this great idea for presenting this song but I fell asleep before I wrote it down. The next morning I couldn't remember a thing and I had turned into a giant cockroach so even if I did remember, I couldn't write it down. Written by Ritchie Adams and Malou Rene, the Bobby Lewis version hit number one on the Hot 100 and stayed there for seven weeks. Use the Turing test to determine if there is intelligent behaviour and the name of this song. Which is?

"The clock downstairs was strikin' four
Couldn't get you off my mind
I heard the milkman at the door"
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. This song was derived from an African-American spiritual. The Highwaymen recorded a version that topped the Hot 100 chart. If you go merrily down your stream of consciousness you should get this one. Well, did you?

"The River Jordan is chilly and cold, hallelujah.
Chills the body but not the soul, hallelujah."
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. This song was written by Hank Cochran and Harlan Howard. Patsy Cline's version reached number twelve on the Hot 100 just before the "autumn" of 1961. Get it?

"You want me to act like we've never kissed
You want me to forget (to forget)
Pretend we've never met (never met)
And I've tried and I've tried
But I haven't yet"
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. "Calcutta" is the song. The music was written by Heino Gaze and English lyrics added by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss. An instrumental version made it to the a number one and a number two position on Hot 100. What surprising artist had a hit song with this? Lyrics included as a whim.

"I've kissed the girls in Naples, they're pretty as can be,
I've also kissed some French girls, who came from Paree."
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. This song written by Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy and recorded by the Miracles. It made it to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. This song reminds me of my days in high school when in that class I constructed my magnum opus: connected bookends with a horse head on either end. Painted yellow. Wish I had taken Home Ec. It had food. Can you name the song?

"When I became of age my mother called me to her side
She said, son, you're growing up now pretty soon you'll take a bride
And then she said, just because you've become a young man now
There's still some things that you don't understand now"
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. This song was written by Kay Rogers, Luther DIxon and Bob Elgin. Gene McDaniels recorded it in 1962 and guess what, on the Hot 100, it made number three. And it was?

"And they He said "Hey, listen"
"I'm gonna fix this-a world today"
"Because I know what's missin' "
Then He rolled his big sleeves up
And a brand-new world began"
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The Marcels had a hit single with this song. The Marceaus had an instrumental version. The former's version made it to number one on the Hot 100, the latter's didn't do Bip. It was written by Rodgers and Hart. Yikes! Though I don't think they wrote the "Bom ba ba bom ba bom ba bom bom ba ba bom ba ba bom ba ba dang a dang dang Ba ba ding a dong ding" part. Can you name this doo-wop classic? .

"And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will hold
I heard somebody whisper please adore me"
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The song was written by Paul Gayten and Robert Guidry. Clarence "Frogman" Henry's recording of it went to number four in 1961. Know it?

"I can't sleep nights because I feel so restless
I don't know what to do, I feel so helpless
And since you've been away, I cry both night and day"
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector wrote this "S" song. You're may need to apply the proper rhythm to the following lyric in order to guess this Ben E. King song. To quote Gertrude Stein, "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." Hope that helps. Song is, is a song is a song is?

"It is a special one, it's never seen the sun
It only comes out when the moon is on the run
And all the stars are gleaming
It's growing in the street right up through the concrete
But soft and sweet and dreaming"
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Writers were Curtis Lee and Tommy Boyce. Curtis Lee recorded it in 1961 and it went to number seven on the Hot 100. Doo-wop struck again. The song puts together something from all of the options. The song is therefore?

"I know you were sent from heaven above
You rule my life with your wonderful love
I know we'll be happy for eternity
'Cause I know
That our love is really real"
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Which is? "The clock downstairs was strikin' four Couldn't get you off my mind I heard the milkman at the door"

Answer: Tossin' and Turnin'

You may have noticed there was no intelligent behavior exercised in the making of this question. I hope there was some in coming up with the answer. The lyric should have been enough. If not and you got it from "Turnin'" from "Turing", Brava or Bravo. If neither, cheer up, only nine more questions to go.

Answer: Michael Row the Boat Ashore

All answers were great gospel songs which made it into the mainstream by various artists. One group headed by Glenn Yarbrough sang "There's a Meeting Here Tonight". It went well with gin and tonic. My favorite version of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" is by Carmen McRae. Elvis did "Peace in the Valley". Finally, Bachman-Turner Overdrive did "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet".

Not that you asked nor is it germane.
3. This song was written by Hank Cochran and Harlan Howard. Patsy Cline's version reached number twelve on the Hot 100 just before the "autumn" of 1961. Get it? "You want me to act like we've never kissed You want me to forget (to forget) Pretend we've never met (never met) And I've tried and I've tried But I haven't yet"

Answer: I Fall to Pieces

Hope you got the clue. It may have made getting the answer too easy and I autumned have done it. This song marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship with Patsy Cline for many of us. "Amarillo by Morning, Albuquerque by Lunch" was a combination of a George Strait song and a parodic phrase of a Glen Campbell song. BTW, It should take about 4 1/2 hours to drive. The other two songs were Patsy's.
4. "Calcutta" is the song. The music was written by Heino Gaze and English lyrics added by Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss. An instrumental version made it to the a number one and a number two position on Hot 100. What surprising artist had a hit song with this? Lyrics included as a whim. "I've kissed the girls in Naples, they're pretty as can be, I've also kissed some French girls, who came from Paree."

Answer: Lawrence Welk

Pat Boone? I don't think he played this on his harmonica. Gregor Samsa? Yeah, I know he already had a mention in the quiz, but don't bug me about it. Francisco Goya? He recorded Madrid in his "The Third of May". I'm not sure that "Calcutta" was a number two. I am taking some liberty there.
"When I became of age my mother called me to her side She said, son, you're growing up now pretty soon you'll take a bride And then she said, just because you've become a young man now There's still some things that you don't understand now"

Answer: Shop Around

It was rumored that the Captain and Tennillle version reached number four in 1976. Little known fact, the surname, Tennille, was actually a corruption of Jimmy Hoffa's post mortem nickname, Jimmy "Ten Eels" Hoffa. Shop class in my days was wood-centric, not automotive, metal work, and it wasn't rocket science. I still have my bookends.

They're fifty years old now. They are my friends. They're in the storage facility. I visit them on first Mondays. I apologized to them for the Home Ec comment. All is good now.
6. This song was written by Kay Rogers, Luther DIxon and Bob Elgin. Gene McDaniels recorded it in 1962 and guess what, on the Hot 100, it made number three. And it was? "And they He said "Hey, listen" "I'm gonna fix this-a world today" "Because I know what's missin' " Then He rolled his big sleeves up And a brand-new world began"

Answer: A Hundred Pounds of Clay

Gene had another big hit with "Tower of Strength" later that year. What year was it? 1961 or 1962 depending on the source. 1961 seems to be in the lead though. The song was also used in the movie, "The Year My Voice Broke". And I always thought it was a rib. And not a hundred pound rib. If it was coal instead of clay, Tennessee Ernie Ford's song would have yielded 320 women and that would have led to a different religion.
Can you name this doo-wop classic? . "And then there suddenly appeared before me The only one my arms will hold I heard somebody whisper please adore me"

Answer: Blue Moon

The song was used in the dual personality movie, "An American Werewolf in London". The movie couldn't make up its mind to be horror or comedy. I think it was more comedy. No, wait more horror. No, wait... The song was written in the 1930s. The tune was in the movie "Manhattan Melodrama" but it didn't meet the current lyric until later. Billy Eckstine and Mel Tormé both hit the charts with it in 1949.
8. The song was written by Paul Gayten and Robert Guidry. Clarence "Frogman" Henry's recording of it went to number four in 1961. Know it? "I can't sleep nights because I feel so restless I don't know what to do, I feel so helpless And since you've been away, I cry both night and day"

Answer: (I Don't Know Why) But I Do

This song was a little out there, like Pluto was before it got demoted to a dust mote and left the galaxy with its tail between its legs. This is one of those songs that doesn't ring a bell until you hear it and then you say, "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" or was it "I've Heard That Song Before.".

The tune doesn't sound too R&Bish to me. I am surprised Perry Como didn't record it. Maybe he did?! Henry also recorded "Ain't Got No Home" partially in falsetto and partially in frogetto.
"It is a special one, it's never seen the sun It only comes out when the moon is on the run And all the stars are gleaming It's growing in the street right up through the concrete But soft and sweet and dreaming"

Answer: Spanish Harlem

Hopefully no one chose "To Each His Own". This song only made it to number ten on the Pop chart. It seemed like a number one to me. This was King's first solo after leaving the Drifters. It took off and landed well. Aretha Franklin's version in 1971 made it to number two. Koko was a clown, a very imaginative cartoon drawn in real time. Out of the inkwell... Erase that thought.
10. Writers were Curtis Lee and Tommy Boyce. Curtis Lee recorded it in 1961 and it went to number seven on the Hot 100. Doo-wop struck again. The song puts together something from all of the options. The song is therefore? "I know you were sent from heaven above You rule my life with your wonderful love I know we'll be happy for eternity 'Cause I know That our love is really real"

Answer: Pretty Little Angel Eyes

Pretty good. The song was used in the movie, "Flipped". Curtis followed up this song with "Under the Moon of Love" which also hit the charts. I had never heard of either of these. Curtis was from Yuma AZ. I visited Yuma years ago. I went to the Yuma Proving Grounds. I think they were doing something regarding establishing a correlation between coffee grounds and your ability to function in the morning or was it the development of a system that could detect large swarms of insects? Beware Gregor.
