Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who had a number one hit single in 1973 with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree"?

Answer: Tony Orlando and Dawn

Didn't you just love Tony Orlando? No nor me; I hated this schmaltz with a vengeance. Mind you "Knock Three Times" was even worse; "What Are You Doing Sunday?" Absolutely anything that doesn't involve listening to you!
2. "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" was a surprise hit for which double act in 1975?

Answer: Laurel and Hardy

Oliver Hardy died in 1957 and Stan Laurel left us in 1965, so unfortunately they were not around to see their only British singles chart success. The record went to number two and, yes, I did buy this one.
3. Which band has recorded hit singles with "A Life Less Ordinary" and "Shining Light"?

Answer: Ash

Ash are from Northern Ireland, they recorded their first hit, "Kung Fu" in 1995 and have had four top-ten singles plus a number one album.
4. Which of these is the correct title of a Scott Joplin composition?

Answer: Maple Leaf Rag

It was harder than you might think to come up with the 'wrong' answers; amongst Scott Joplin's many titles are "The Sycamore", "Weeping Willow" and "Fig Leaf Rag".
"Maple Leaf Rag" was probably his most enduring piece, at least until the movie "The Sting" was released with "The Entertainer" as part of its soundtrack. Scott Joplin was probably born in 1867, possibly the following year, and he died in 1917.
5. Which of these singers is most associated with this song? "Strange fruit hangin' From the poplar trees Pastoral scene Of the gallant south."

Answer: Billie Holiday

"Strange Fruit" began life as a poem by New Yorker Abel Meeropol. It was written as a reaction to the lynchings of black Americans in the 1930s. Billie Holiday first performed the song in 1939. It has been covered many times but I don't think any one comes close to matching Billie's version.
6. These lyrics are taken from a Neneh Cherry song; which type of tree is missing? "Got a ___ growing in the garden, Always climbing the tree is the morphine. Got a view of the love and I'm chillin' Got a view of the hem of the horizon."

Answer: Hornbeam

Taken from Neneh Cherry's "Hornbeam" which was a track on her third album "Man". This album also contained one of Neneh's biggest hits, "7 Seconds" which featured Youssou N'Dour.
7. The great Joan Armatrading now; which one of these tree titles was a tremendous album track and usually featured in her live shows?

Answer: Willow

I've only ever seen Joan Armatrading live on one occasion and "Willow" was part of her encore; just sensational, what a voice.

"I said I'm strong, straight,
Willing to be a shelter in a storm;
Your willow
Oh willow
When the sun is out."
8. Complete this KT Tunstall single title, "Black Horse and the ___ Tree".

Answer: Cherry

Like many people I'd never heard of KT Tunstall until she turned up virtually unannounced one night on Jools Holland's "Later" TV show. She came out, did "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and stole the show. Since then she has gone from strength to strength appearing at Glastonbury and being nominated for several awards.

Her debut album "Eye to the Telescope" went to number three in Britain.
9. Gene Pitney sang about "24, ___" what is the missing tree?

Answer: Sycamore

Although never released as a single in the UK, "24 Sycamore" was a favourite with Gene Pitney fans and usually appears on his compilation albums.
10. I just had to finish with this one; "There are so many different kinds of conifer trees. This is just a few of them: Spruce, hemlocks, larch, cyprus, juniper, Fir, Douglas fir, cedar, yew, Pine, the dwarf conifer, And the great California sequoia redwood." Can you name the act?

Answer: They Might Be Giants

Most trees in a song lyric? I can't think of one with more than this; "C is for Conifers" by They Might Be Giants.
