Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the age of six weeks, Fanny suffered from an illness that left her physically impaired. What was this lifelong infection?

Answer: Blindness

Fanny Crosby became blind after a supposedly incompetent doctor suggested using a mustard poultice on her inflamed eyes. This occurred in 1820.
2. In which well-known hymn did Fannie write: "When clothed in His brightness Transported I rise To meet Him in clouds of the sky"

Answer: A Wonderful Savior

Although these are all beautiful, well-known hymns, "A Wonderful Savior" is the only one written by Crosby. "A Wonderful Savior" is also known as "He Hideth My Soul".
3. In which hymn would you sing: "I know I shall see in His beauty The King in whose law I delight Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps, And giveth me songs in the night."

Answer: Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It

"Redeemed" was just one of many songs in which Fanny wrote about God's redeeming love. The hymn was written in 1882.
4. Fanny used over 100 pseudonyms as well as her real name during her prolific career as a hymn writer. Why did she not write all of them using her own name?

Answer: Many publishers would not use more than a few songs by any one author in a hymnal

She did not do this necessarily because of a gender bias. It was based more on the large quantity of songs she'd written.
5. In which much-loved hymn did Fanny say, "This is my story, this is my song..."?

Answer: Blessed Assurance

"Amazing Grace" is probably sung more often than any other hymn and has a wonderful story behind its composition, but it was not written by Fanny Crosby. Briton John Newton was the writer of "Amazing Grace".
6. Not only was Fanny a prolific writer of poems and hymns, she learned to play which two musical instruments?

Answer: Piano and guitar

Fannie loved to sing, and learned to play the piano and guitar while a young student at the New York Institute for the Blind. The school was started in 1831.
7. In the title of one song, Fanny wrote "Though Your Sins Be As ..." Which color did she say sins might be in this title?

Answer: Scarlet

The words of the song say that though sins might be as red as scarlet, they can become as white as snow. Other lines from the song include:

"Though your sins be as scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they be red like crimson,
They shall be as wool!"
8. In a song entitled "To God Be the Glory," why did Fanny say that God should be given the glory?

Answer: Because God has done great things and loved the world so much He gave us His son

Though all the answers may be true, they are not all mentioned in this song. The hymn's refrain starts with:

"Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!"
9. In spite of her disability, Fanny married Alexander Van Alstyne. What was unusual about her marriage during the 19th century era?

Answer: She retained her maiden name.

Fanny continued to use her maiden name at the insistence of her husband. He felt that she should do this because of her musical career. They had one child, a daughter Francis, who died as an infant.
10. How old was Fannie when she wrote these beautiful lines? "Oh what a happy soul I am, Although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world Contented I will be"

Answer: She wrote them at the age of nine.

To be happy with her life as a blind person was one of Fanny Crosby's earliest resolves. She determined as a young child to let her blindness become an asset rather than a liability.
