quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Wild Wood" was which artist's second solo album?

Answer: Paul Weller

Weller of course was in The Jam, then the Style Council. "Wild Wood" is among his finest work.
2. "Down To Earth" was a 2001 release from which artist?

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy of course started his career with Black Sabbath.
3. "Destination Anywhere" was a solo project by which artist?

Answer: Jon Bon Jovi

Jon Bon Jovi is still making music with Bon Jovi, but this solo album spawned 3 hit singles in the UK.
4. Which solo artist's greatest hits album was called "HIStory"?

Answer: Michael Jackson

The youngest member of the Jackson 5 and one of the most popular solo artists of all time. It's sad of me to admit this but "Beat It" is a tremendous tune.
5. Who recorded an album called "One-Nil"?

Answer: Neil Finn

Neil was the front man in Crowded House. He has also achieved a degree of solo success in the UK.
6. "Viva Hate" was whose first solo album?

Answer: Morrissey

Morrissey fronted one of the most important bands the world has ever seen, The Smiths. The songwriting partnership with Johnny Marr was incredible.
7. Which artist had an album called "Walls and Bridges"?

Answer: John Lennon

Leaving aside the rumour that McCartney was killed in 1966, Lennon was the first of the Beatles to die. History will show that Lennon was one the most influential songwriters in the history of music. Although his solo career never quite brought him the same adoration he had in The Beatles, he did record some quite brilliant songs as a solo artist.
8. This is one for true indie fans. Which singer's debut solo album was entitled "Keep Britain Untidy"?

Answer: Tom Hingley

Tom was the singer in The Inspiral Carpets. A truly wonderful band with wonderful tunes. If you don't know their music then go listen to them, it'll be worth it. "Keep Britain Untidy" was an acoustic album, just Tom and his guitar.
9. Which ageing rocker released "Are You Passionate?" in 2002?

Answer: Neil Young

After being in Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil embarked on a wonderful solo career which often saw him record with Crazy Horse. Neil was once unsuccessfully sued by his own record company for making records which didn't sound like Neil Young.
10. "Time Changes Everything" saw the vocal debut of which guitarist?

Answer: John Squire

After leaving the Stone Roses, Squire formed The Seahorses who only managed one album. The Seahorses album didn't exactly give Squire the glory he sought, this solo effort followed a similar pattern. It would of course be almost impossible to reach the heights of greatness he achieved whilst in the Roses.
11. "The Sky Is Too High" was the debut album of which artist?

Answer: Graham Coxon

Graham has now parted company with Blur. He played guitar with Blur for over 10 years but had recorded four solo albums by the time of the break up.
12. "All Things Must Pass" was a hit album for which artist?

Answer: George Harrison

This album is, in my humble opinion, the best work produced by any of the former Beatles as solo artists. After almost 8 years of being limited to two or three songs per album George obviously had plenty of material waiting to be heard - This was originally a triple album.
13. Who wrote the soundtrack for the film "Local Hero"?

Answer: Mark Knopfler

Knopfler of course was the voice and guitar of Dire Straits. He was also the main songwriting force in the band.
14. "Transformer" was recorded by...?

Answer: Lou Reed

Lou recorded some wonderful songs, particularly whilst in The Velvet Underground.
15. "People Move On" was the debut solo album by whom?

Answer: Bernard Butler

After making two albums as Suede guitarist, Bernard quit the band and embarked upon a largely unsuccessful solo career. It's a shame because both of his solo albums are great. He has also recorded albums with Dave McAlmont, which are also good. The man is a genius!
16. "Ten Summoners Tales" was released by....?

Answer: Sting

Sting was in The Police. He enjoyed great success with the band and he has enjoyed huge success as a solo artist.
17. "Manic Nirvana" was a hit album for...?

Answer: Robert Plant

Robert Plant was the voice of Led Zeppelin, one of the finest bands ever to make music. Unfortunately, neither he nor Jimmy Page could match the standards set in Zeppelin with their solo efforts.
18. "Goddess In The Doorway" was a 2001 album by whom?

Answer: Mick Jagger

This album never quite made the impression that Mick was hoping for, although it was well received in much of the music press.
19. "Music Of The Spheres" was a solo effort from which Manchester lad?

Answer: Ian Brown

This was Brown's third solo album. It includes the fabulous "FEAR". Pretty much all of Brown's solo work is of a high standard. Much of it was written and recorded with Aziz Ibrahim, the man who replaced John Squire when he left the Stone Roses.
20. Surely the easiest question on the whole website: Which artist's first two solo albums were called "McCartney" and "Ram"?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Did he really die in 1966 and was he really replaced by an imposter? If so then it's odd that the imposter had a strong scouse accent and wrote similarly poppy tunes to the real Paul. Was it all a big hoax? Probably. What can you say about Paul? Hmmm, his real first name is James.
