Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following artists never recorded a song called "Ear"?

Answer: Miles Davis

Miles Davis did record an album called "In a Silent Way" (1969), which is good for the ears.
2. Where there's ears, there is wax. Who wrote a song about the ear's by-product, called "Ear Wax"?

Answer: Bauhaus

"Ear Wax" appeared on the "In Search of Satori" EP that was released in 1982. How they managed to get ear wax on all copies of the EP, we'll never know.
3. This band loves guitar solos that are so long they'll make your ears bleed. So they wrote a song called "Ear Song". Who am I talking about?

Answer: The Bevis Frond

Their knowledge of the human head isn't very big though. In 1987 they released the album "Inner Marshland", which included "I've Got Eyes in the Back of my Head".
4. Earache Records was a very important label in the development of grindcore and death metal. Both genres known for their earshattering capacities. One of their most important bands was Napalm Death, who used to be specialised in very short songs. How long is the shortest track on their debut album "Scum"?

Answer: 4 seconds

"You suffer" is exactly four seconds long. Besides Napalm Death, Earache records released pivotal albums by bands like Carcass, Morbid Angel, Godflesh, Entombed, Naked City, Cathedral, Painkiller, Scorn, Brutal Truth, Sleep and Extreme Noise Terror. More recently they've taken the dwindling career of sometime godbotherer Deicide under their wings.

In 2006 they released a first video game, for PS2 called "Extreme Metal Racing".
5. In 1999 this hiphop crew released the track '"X for tha Ear" on an odds & sods compilation called "Lost Files". Who?

Answer: Digital Underground

Their 1990 album "Sex Packets" included the track "Underwater Rimes". Being underwater is not good for your ears. Getting too much water in them messes them up. Or so I heard.
6. This Canadian punk band recorded a song called "Ear Ache". Who knew what they were talking about?

Answer: D.O.A.

D.O.A. stands for Dead On Arrival. It's a medical term. Though in terms of this band one should really be speaking about Deaf On Arrival.
7. In 2006 the band Shooting At Unarmed Men released an album called "Hey Tinnitus!", after one of the worst hearing afflictions around. This band was formed by Jonathan Chapple, who used to be the bass player in which quasi-legendary bunch of noisemongers?

Answer: McLusky

There's lots of famous musicians who suffer from tinnitus: Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Neil Young, John Densmore, Bob Mould, J Mascis, Lemmy from Motorhead, Kevin Shields, Andy Partridge, and many more. Even film composer Danny Elfman suffers from it.
8. In "Show me the Way" Peter Frampton sings about 'ringing in his ears', which is the condition known as 'tinnitus' from the previous question. In 1987 this rather heavy guitar band released a cover version of this song. Sadly enough their leader has started suffering from tinnitus - the constant ringing in the ears - himself over the years. Which band is this?

Answer: Dinosaur Jr

All of the optional bands for this question have at least one member who's suffering from tinnitus. Only Dinosaur Jr however recorded a cover version of "Show Me the Way", on the b-side of their "Little Fury Things" EP.
9. Who recorded the song "Eardrum Buzz"?

Answer: Wire

Wire is famous for playing so loud they actually make your eardrums buzz. This song is however very soft.
10. Permanently stoned comedians Cheech & Chong recorded the song "Earache my Eye", which can be heard in the film "Up in Smoke" (1978). But as which fictional character was the song originally recorded for their 1974 album "Cheech & Chong's Wedding Album"?

Answer: Alice Bowie

"Earache my Eye" was covered by the Rollins Band. It appeared on the b-side of their "Tearing" (1992) single. Henry Rollins' anti-drugs stance is quite wellknown, so for him to cover a song by famous drug abusers shows he does have a sense of humor after all ...
