Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who founded Earth, Wind & Fire?

Answer: Maurice White

Maurice White, a one-time member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, founded the band in 1969. After a move out to L. A. from Chicago, he added his brother Verdine and several others to the lineup. Philip Bailey joined up in 1971 after the release of the group's debut album the previous year.
2. What was the only Earth, Wind & Fire song to climb to the top of "Billboard Magazine"'s Pop Singles Chart?

Answer: "Shining Star"

Although the group had eight songs climb to the top of the R&B chart, "Shining Star" was EWF's only pop chart-topper. It appeared on the triple platinum album "That's The Way Of The World" in 1975.
3. What was Earth, Wind & Fire's original name?

Answer: Salty Peppers

Originally, Maurice White started the band in Chicago and hired Wade Flemons and Don Whitehead to make up the original lineup in 1969. The original group was popular locally, recording commercial jingles and a song that received some regional success. When a second single faltered, Maurice moved out to LA and coaxed his brother Verdine to join him.
4. "Got To Get You Into My Life" appeared on the soundtrack of what motion picture?

Answer: "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

The Beatles remake hit number nine on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and number one on the R&B chart in 1978.
5. Who did Earth, Wind & Fire team up with on the song "Boogie Wonderland"?

Answer: The Emotions

Jeanette, Wanda and Sheila Hutchinson were The Emotions (Theresa and Adrianne Davis were also members at one time), a Chicago group that also scored with the chart-topping "Best Of My Love".
6. What singer was added to the group in 1971 and became co-lead singer with Maurice White?

Answer: Philip Bailey

Philip Bailey was born in Denver but moved to Chicago, where he fronted many local bands. His falsetto vocals added a new dimension to EWF and made their sound more pop-oriented. Still with the band, Bailey also recorded ten solo albums and scored a huge hit called "Easy Lover" with Phil Collins in 1984.
7. What was the name of Earth, Wind & Fire's brass section?

Answer: Phenix Horns

The four members of the Phenix Horns included Don Myrick, Louis Satterfield, Rahmlee Michael Davis and Michael Harris. They have also backed up many popular solo artists. Leader and founder Myrick was shot and killed in 1993, when police entered his apartment (they had a search warrant) looking for drugs and thought that the barbeque grill starter Myrick held in his hands was a gun. Louis Satterfield died in 2004.
8. Which of the following songs was a number-one hit for Earth, Wind & Fire on the U. K. Singles Chart?

Answer: None of these songs

EWF could only climb as high as number three in the U. K. with "September" and "Let's Groove". Oddly, their only US number one, "Shining Star", never charted in the UK.
9. Which of the following songs hit number one on the Billboard R&B chart?

Answer: "System Of Survival"

"System Of Survival" topped the R&B chart in 1987 but only reached #60 on the pop chart. "After The Love Has Gone" was EWF's second biggest pop hit, climbing to number two. It did not, however, climb to the top of the R&B chart. "Heritage" was a Top Ten R&B hit in 1990 and "Pure Gold" was a minor R&B hit in 2005.
10. In what year was Earth, Wind & Fire inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

Answer: 2000

They received that distinction in 2000 and have continued to produce great music under the leadership of Philip Bailey.
