European Death Metal Trivia Quiz

Death metal tastes can be worlds apart even within their own sub-genre (and I don't mean geographically). This quiz focuses on bands with heavier, grittier vocals with European origins.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Related by their country of origin, bands Behemoth and Vader also share the commonality of establishing the extreme metal underground in their homeland. But which homeland are we talking about?

Answer: Poland

Behemoth has been associated with seven different record labels as well as a controversy regarding bands which allegedly promote Satanism in Poland.
2. Formed in Bayonne, France, by brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier in 1996, this band is no longer known by the name Godzilla.

Answer: Gojira

Godzilla had to change their name due to legal issues, and so they opted for the fictional monster's Japanese name, Gojira. They played alongside Behemoth in 2007.

Inspired by the name for a magic textbook, the intentionally misspelled Grenouer hail from Russia and were formed in 1992.

The Swedish Godgory, also formed in 1992, have since broken up, with a demo and four studio albums under their belt.

Mothra is a giant butterfly/moth hybrid found in the Godzilla film series which occasionally allies with the mutant dinosaur.
3. If you listen to this band's "Dark Chamber Litanies", you might come across some mention of "Cadent Beating" and "Winds of Despair". And if "Mr. Jarrod" asks, amidst this prayer, which band it is referring to, what can you expect the congregation to reply?

Answer: Dawn of Tears

Dawn of Tears originated in Spain. "Cadent Beating", "Winds of Despair" and "Mr. Jarrod" are songs from their album entitled "Dark Chamber Litanies".

Hybrid, Avulsed, and Nahemah also hail from Spain.

"Litany" is also Vader's fifth studio album, and the name for a series of prayers spoken by a leader which a congregation then replies to.
4. This Finnish band's debut album, "Slumber of Sullen Eyes" was featured in Terrorizer's "40 Death Metal Albums that you Must Hear". They also share their name with an album title by Behemoth.

Answer: Demigod

"Let Chaos Prevail" is Demigod's third studio album, while "The Apostasy" and "Satanica" are the titles of other Behemoth albums.
5. I'm thinking of a word which can be found in several places in the death metal world. Besides being in a Behemoth album title, it is also the name of a song by Living Sacrifice, the name of a band from Sweden and, at one point, a band from Norway. Which word, meaning the desertion of one's faith, am I thinking of?

Answer: Apostasy

While "apostasy" fits the answer to this riddle, "blasphemy", "heresy", and "nihilism" or other forms of these words are plentiful in the death metal genre, as well. No wonder it's got a bad reputation.

And did you notice the mention of Living Sacrifice, an American band? I know that has no place in this European quiz, but I bet you didn't mind the extra clue.
6. This band mastered a beautiful mix of melodic and heavy sound for the death metal genre before they split up in 2010. They also share a country of origin with bands like Carcass, Sylosis, Napalm Death, and Bring Me the Horizon.

Answer: Viatrophy

In Flames is from Sweden, Descending from Greece, and Psycroptic isn't even from Europe, while Viatrophy and the rest originated in the United Kingdom.

Thankfully, the mourning of Viatrophy can be eased with the celebration of the handful of other bands its members have also been, or gone on to be, a part of!
7. This isolated country surely deserves some recognition in a European metal quiz, although its contributions to the genre may not be among the most well-known. Which country has given bands like Solstafir, Gone Postal, Changer, and Severed Crotch to the European metal scene?

Answer: Iceland

Solstafir's first gig outside of Iceland, played in Denmark, helped the band secure a deal with Spinefarm Records, a label associated with names like Nightwish, Rammstein, Satyricon, Amorphis, and Demigod.
8. This European country has seen the formation of a number of bands prominent in the death metal genre, including Bury My Sins, Heaven Shall Burn, Impending Doom, and Necrophagist.

Answer: Germany

Germany has been the birthplace of many master musicians, from classical music composers to bands of the heavy, speed, power, black, and death metal varieties. Of course this quiz praises the country more for its many contributions to the latter genre, and for still being a strong supporter of the music with its large metal festivals like Wacken Open Air and Party.San Open Air.
9. This band, formed in Italy in 2000, takes its lyrical and thematic inspiration from the comic series "Tales From The Crypt", with song titles like "Chop His Head Off!" and "A Monstrous Feeling". Their resume includes airplay on Bruce Dickinson's radio show.

Answer: Stigma

Stigma has appeared in Germany's Wacken Open Air and has shared at least one member with both Sylosis and Viatrophy (okay, so it's the same member in all three!).
10. We've touched on bands from the European countries Poland, France, Spain, Finland, United Kingdom, Iceland, Germany, and Italy. Which band can finish off this quiz with an unmentioned European country as its origin?

Answer: Aborted

We Butter the Bread with Butter, Children of Bodom, and Molotov Solution are from Germany, Finland, and the United States, respectively.

Aborted claims Belgium as its country of origin, although it has members from France, Israel, and the United Kingdom, as well.
