First Lines of Classic Rock Songs #3 Quiz

More of my favorite music from the good old days. Some of these songs had lots of air time, others are rather unknown songs buried in an album. Good luck and have fun!

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The year was 1971. The album was called "Killer". The lead singer had a woman's name. Which song began "She struts into the room; well I don't know her"?

Answer: Be My Lover

Written my Michael Bruce and performed by Alice Cooper, the song is a story about a chance meeting of lovers in a bar after they have a drink or two. (Or maybe three.) A little humor the last time the chorus is sung as Cooper imitates Mae West.
2. "Well I flew in from Miami Beach, BOAC" begins which Fab Four song?

Answer: Back in the USSR

Written by Lennon/McCartney and performed by the Beatles in 1968 on the album "The Beatles", which is more commonly referred to as "The White Album".
The song talks about a Russian who had a 'dreadful flight' and couldn't wait to get back home as he thought of the Georgian girls and the balalaikas 'ringing out' when he returned.
3. Two things I learned about this band doing this quiz: 1. They are from California. 2. They played at Woodstock. Which 'swamp rock' song of 1969 begins "Now when I was just a little boy, standin' to my daddy's knee"?

Answer: Born on the Bayou

Written by John Fogerty for Creedence Clearwater Revival's second album "Bayou Country", "Born on the Bayou" was the B-side of the classic "Proud Mary".
CCR took the stage at Woodstock at three AM due to The Grateful Dead playing longer then they were supposed to.
4. If you were in high school in the late 1970s, you probably went to "Heaven Tonight". And if you did, you might know which song from that album started with the line: "Mother told me, yes she told me I'd meet girls like you."

Answer: Surrender

Written by Rick Nielson and released in 1978, Cheap Trick hit their stride with the release of "Heaven Tonight". This is one of the few albums that could play over and over at a party and never get old.
Ahh..those parties out at Berkheimers...or the springs. (Feel free to substitute your own party places for mine, the memories are likely the same.)
I saw Cheap Trick play at the Illinois State Fair years ago with Blue Oyster Cult. My conclusion: both bands were about equal.
Saw them again near St. Louis with Heart and Journey a few years ago. My conclusion: Cheap Trick didn't play nearly long enough; Heart stole the show.
5. "A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile" is the beginning to which four week number one single in 1972?

Answer: American Pie

The lyrics to this song have been analyzed, reanalyzed, preanalyzed, deanalyzed and mostly over analyzed. I quit trying to figure it out long ago and just sat back and enjoyed it.
The title track for the "American Pie" album released in 1971, Don Mclean wrote and performed it. It was written about 'the day the music died', a plane crash which killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper in 1959, and the chaos it created in some circles.
When asked what the lyrics meant, Don Mclean once responded, "It means I never have to work again."
6. The fourth song on the fourth album from this middle of the USA band, it was too good of an overture to be 'left over'. Which 1976 song begins: "On a crystal morning, I can see the dewdrops falling"?

Answer: Miracles Out Of Nowhere

A song of hope written by Kerry Livgren, performed by Kansas on the "Leftoverture" album. "Carry On Wayward Son" deservedly got most of the accolades on this album, but the rest of the songs made it one of my favorites. Too bad these guys didn't stay together for just a few more albums like this, but 'nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky' as they later said.
7. This English band is forever entrenched in rock and roll history. This song is from their sixth studio album recorded in 1971, is 23.5 minutes long and takes up the entire last half of the album. It begins with a sonar-like PING repeated several times. The first line of the song is: "Overhead the albatross, hangs motionless upon the air". What is the title of the song?

Answer: Echoes

"Echoes" was written by Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason, who are collectively Pink Floyd. Their sixth album, "Meddle", preceded "The Dark Side of the Moon" and began the groups' focus on the problems of mankind instead of psychedelic music.
Interestingly, the title and lyrics went through many changes. In typical early Pink Floyd fashion, its first title was "Nothing-Parts 1-24". The song originally began "Planets meeting face to face". Quite a change from an interstellar song to an underwater song. Actually, its about people's reactions to meeting other people.
8. From the third album of a royally named British band, this is a story of youth and rebellion while living in close quarters. I hope you don't have a 'sheer' heart attack trying to figure this one out. Which song begins with the line "My new purple shoes, been amazin' the people next door"?

Answer: Tenement Funster

And the unforgettable second line: "And my rock and roll forty-fives, been enragin' the folks on the lower floor". Written by Roger Taylor and performed by Queen on the "Sheer Heart Attack" album in 1974. Clocking in at under three minutes makes this one of those songs that are way too short.
9. A band from my home state of Illinois, they took their name from a truck. This song is from their second album but came to my attention as the opening track of their live album released in 1977. "Well I've seen women who cross their legs, when they sit down to the table" is the first line to what 1972 song? (Remember, you get what you play for.)

Answer: Like You Do

REO Speedwagon's lead guitarist Gary Richrath wrote this song for their second album, "R.E.O./T.W.O." It opened their "REO live: You Get What You Play For" album which is one of my favorite live albums. Their fame didn't come until many years later.
10. This glam rock band was called the most successful British group of the 1970s based on singles. And yet few of my buddies had even heard of them. Their fifth studio album from 1974 burnt up the charts in England. The sixth song on that album begins: "I've seen the yellow lights go down the Mississippi, I've seen the bridges of the world and they're for real". What is the name of the song?

Answer: Far Far Away

Written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea and performed by Slade on the album "Slade in Flame". The song is about the band's constant traveling and keeping their feet on the ground.
Slade was a very popular band in the early 1970's, but declined rapidly. In the early 1980's they released the album "Get Your Hands Off My Power Supply", with the singles "My, Oh My" and "Run Runaway", which brought them back to the charts.
