Hint

Question 14 of 15
14. The list is getting to the end now. This song evokes memories of my childhood and the video was pretty controversial at the time. During the 80s we had the AIDS epidemic and the public health video which upset a lot of people. This song showed a young man travelling around the country looking for 'love' and sometimes getting a beating for his homosexual tendencies. This 'Smalltown Boy' was a stunning club classic, but by whom? Hint

Question 15 of 15
15. Well my little list comes to an end and it's been FUN listening to some of the tunes of my youth. Any ideas as to who this last tune maybe sung by? Hint

1. OK, 'The Letter' is key to the start of this quiz. I was watching the video to this song on a famous video playing website and it got me thinking, "where will I be in 14 questions' time if I use the first song on the list seen on the right hand side of this said website?" So it is important to remember that 'The Letter' was a hit for this band in 1967; can you name them?

Answer: The Box Tops

The original Box Tops' line-up was Bill Cunningham, Danny Smythe, Alex Chilton, Gary Talley and John Evans. They formed in 1963 had a string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic. It was 1967 when 'The Letter' became an international hit staying four weeks at the top of the Billboard charts and winning two Grammies.
2. The next track was top of the list from the previous question and this has to go down as one of my favourite tracks of all time. You see, in autumn all the leaves are brown, but in the song it's a winter's day, they say. This was a huge worldwide hit for the group The Mamas and the Papas in 1965. What is the song?

Answer: California Dreamin'

Although not a number one hit in the US or UK, this haunting song is probably and arguably the bands finest hit. The Mamas comprised of Michelle Phillips and Cass Elloit, the Papas Denny Doherty and John Phillips. 'Monday Monday' which was their follow up single, hit the top spot in the US.
3. Now with the previous song being of a certain genre it is not at all surprising to have yet another classic hitting the list at a right rate of knots. This Animals classic certainly is one we all tap our feet to, in particular those in New Orleans. Where am I?

Answer: The House of the Rising Sun

This song was adapted from an older song by the lads from the North East of England. To many this song is their greatest hit and paved the way for many more great songs. The original bassist, Chaz Chandler, also managed Jimi Hendrix in later years.

The song itself, based on bad times in New Orleans, hit the top of the charts in US, UK and Canada.
4. Now don't be getting all 'moody' if you haven't done any good so far, but I am sure the 'blues' will soon be blown away by this classic tune from 1967. Which song is the biggest selling for the group hinted at above?

Answer: Nights in White Satin

From Birmingham UK, the Moody Blues were formed in the 1960s and played as a group for more than fifty years. The group is said have sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and have been awarded 18 platinum and gold discs.

'Nights in White Satin' did not reach the top of the charts in either the US or UK due to the length of the original version, over seven minutes long.
5. Alannah Myles loved to belt out that superb voice to the one song that won her a Grammy in 1990. Do you recall this song that suggests a heatwave and is a dedication to Elvis?

Answer: Black Velvet

Canadian born Myles belted this song in 1989 where it led to chart success in her native country and the United States plus the UK. Myles also won a Grammy for best female vocalist in 1990 for 'Black Velvet'. The story goes that on the tenth anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, a bus full of Elvis fans travelling to Graceland inspired the writer of this song, Christopher Ward (along with David Tyson).
6. A little change of pace now, and on to a band who loved to get down and dirty with the guitar rifts and heavy drumming plus the distinctive voice of the man who sang 'Nothing Else Matters' - for which band?

Answer: Metallica

Formed in 1981 Metallica have had massive success world wide for their metal approach. The current quartet of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo have enjoyed since 2003 many successes. It was however the mid nineties where the self named album 'Metallica' charted 'Nothing Else Matters' as a single.
7. The rain falls down outside my window as I write, which is apt considering the song I now have on my playlist. Rainy season comes to us all at different times of the year but for Axl and company it comes when?

Answer: November Rain

'November Rain' was the A side song that had 'Sweet Child of Mine' on the B side. Both songs are Guns and Roses classics. Written by Axl Rose, the songs appear on the 'Use your Illusion I' album.
8. Time to crank the volume up and listen to a song that reminds me of my university days; we all have one of those I suspect. Now Richard Ashcroft led his band to number two in 1997 with this song, but can you name the classic and the band?

Answer: 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' by The Verve

The Verve found things interesting when releasing this classic as the opening phase of the song landed them in a royalties issue with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. The introduction was taken from 'The Last Time' a song from the sixties. To make things more interesting, Jagger and Richards were happy to have their names on the rights to the song with Richard Ashcroft, the lead singer of The Verve, being added later on.

The song itself reached number two in the UK charts and number 12 on the US billboard chart during June 1997.
9. The list has changed to a different beat now, that of Brit Pop big time style. Now we have Oasis as the daddy of Brit Pop but you can bet this group would argue the case - remember the song that was labelled as 'Song 2'? I wonder what 'Song 1' was? Name the band please?

Answer: Blur

Released in 1997, this tune was Blur's biggest success in the US. Reaching number two in the UK, it came at a time when Britpop was dominated by bands such as Blur and Oasis. The song was written by Albarn, Coxon, James and Rowntree, the band members.
10. A drop into the seventies now and we come across a very exciting band who in a small way influenced my taste in music. Talking Heads were the band, but which one of these gems am I listening to now?

Answer: Psycho Killer

'Psycho Killer' was written by David Byrne, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth and released in 1977. It never entered into the UK charts and had small success in the US, peaking at number 92 on the Billboard chart. You can find this song on the 'Talking Heads:77' album.
11. I have said to my family that when I pass on to the next life I would love this song played at my funeral, now I am not being biased here but it was next on the list and why not? The Smiths were a band that certainly knew how to fix a mood with any of their songs, but this one was particularly classy. What is next on this list?

Answer: There is a Light That Never Goes Out

Written by Steven Morrissey and Johnny Marr, this classic Smiths song was regarded by the New Musical Express magazine as the greatest love song ever written. The haunting rifts by Marr on guitar make the whole experience of listening to the song one to cherish, in my humble opinion.

The song had limited success in the singles world but was part of the cracking 'The Queen is Dead' album released in 1986.
12. Once Joy Division, this band had a massive club and chart success with the hypnotic 'Blue Monday'. It was one of those songs that had everyone on the dance floor, but who released this classic?

Answer: New Order

'Blue Monday' had huge success in the singles chart world reaching number one in both Ireland and the UK Indie charts during 1983, the year of its release. At nearly seven-and-a-half minutes, 'Blue Monday' is one of the longest tracks ever to chart on the UK Singles Chart, and is the biggest-selling 12" single of all time.
13. Some people may think this next choice is a little bizarre, which is fine, however, I cant help what pops up on the list next as 'Johnny Come Home' blares out. I quite like this tune, it's full of some really nice rifts and beats. Do you have any idea who the band is?

Answer: Fine Young Cannibals

From the self named album 'Fine Young Cannibals', this song reached number eight in the UK charts and number nine in the US dance charts during 1985. Lead singer Roland Gift co wrote the song that depicts the story of a young runaway.

Answer: Bronski Beat

From the 1984 album 'Age of Consent', this single was Bronski Beat's biggest hit and put Jimmy Somerville on to international stardom. Openly gay, Somerville was an advocate for gay rights and with this song he took an enormous gamble with the video that was shot, what with the AIDS epidemic causing stress around the world.

The song reached number three in the UK charts but hit the number one spot in both Belgium and the Netherlands; it hit the top of the US dance charts also.
15. Well my little list comes to an end and it's been FUN listening to some of the tunes of my youth. Some have been reminders of good times and some reminders of not so good times but this last one for me is wonderful. This tune is fantastic with a "texture like sun", "to distant lands takes both my hands". Some say it is drug related, but even if it is, the music surpasses the message, whatever it may be. Any ideas as to who this last tune maybe sung by?

Answer: 'Golden Brown' by the Stranglers

From the 1981 album 'La Folie' this was The Stranglers' most successful single reaching the UK singles chart at number two. There has been much controversy surrounding the lyrics. Hugh Cornwell, who wrote the song, states "'Golden Brown' works on two levels. It's about heroin and also about a girl". Essentially the lyrics describe how "both provided me with pleasurable times".

Quotes taken from the book 'The Stranglers Song by Song' published in 1991.
