Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the opening of the opera Prince Tamino enters in flight, singing his aria "Zu Hilfe! Zu Hilfe!" ("Help! Help!"). From what is he fleeing?

Answer: An evil serpent.

Tamino, a prince from a distant land, finds himself lost in a forest and threatened by a huge serpent. After he falls unconscious to the ground, three ladies, servants of the Queen of the Night, appear and slay the serpent.
2. The next aria "Die Vogelfänger bin ich ja" is sung by Papageno, who supplies much of the comic level of the opera. He is in service to the Queen of the Night. What does he bring to the Queen?

Answer: Birds that he has trapped.

The first line of the aria reads in translation, "Yes, I am the birdcatcher". He enters carrying a large birdcage on his back. When Tamino awakes he thinks that Papageno has killed the serpent. Papageno takes the credit, but will be punished by the three ladies.
3. Tamino is given a locket with a portrait by the three ladies. In his aria "Dies Bildnis is bezuaubernd schön" ("This picture is incredibly beautiful"), who is he looking at?

Answer: Pamina.

The three ladies have (falsely) told Tamino that Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, has been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer, and that he must rescue her and return her to her mother.
4. In the Quintet that ends the first scene, the three ladies give presents to Tamino and Papageno. Tamino receives the magic flute of the opera's title, but what do the ladies give Papageno?

Answer: A set of silver bells.

The bells will be used later in the opera, once when Papageno wards off the evil advances of Monostatos against Pamina and at the end to summon his promised bride, Papagena.
5. In the aria "Zum Ziele führt dich diese Bahn" ("This path will lead you to your goal"), who is guiding Tamino?

Answer: The three boys.

The three boys appear at crucial moments during the opera: guiding Tamino through the forest, returning the flute and bells to Tamino and Papageno, encouraging them during their preparation for their trails, and consoling Pamina who thinks that Tamino no longer loves her. At the end they stand in triumph with Sorastro, Tamino and Pamina, and the priests.
6. In the aria "Ihr in den Weisheitstempel" ("You in the temple of wisdom") that opens the second act, Sarastro invokes two gods who preside over the action of the opera. Who are these?

Answer: Isis and Osiris.

Behind the opera lies a very strong Masonic theme -- both Mozart and his librettist (Emanuel Schikaneder) were members of the Masons -- and with the Masons comes a middle-eastern and magical tone. Isis was the great mother goddess of Egypt and Osiris, her consort, a god of death and rebirth.
7. In Monostatos' aria "Alles fühlt der Liebe Freuden" ("Every creatures feels the joy of love"), why does he feel that he cannot experience love?

Answer: Because he is black.

Monostatos is the opposite number to Papageno. Papageno is a good character who is in service to the evil Queen of the Night, while Monostatos is a bad character in the household of Sarastro, the virtuous sage and father of Pamina. In the end each character switches sides. Monostatos is destroyed along with the Queen and her retinue, while Papageno is rewarded with a wfie, Papagena.
8. In Sarastro's great aria "In diesen heil'gen Hallen" ("In these sacred halls") what does he assert is not to be found there?

Answer: Revenge.

For most of the first act Mozart has us believe that the Queen is good and Sarastro evil, but at the end of the first act all is reversed, and Sarastro is revealed as a noble and virtuous sage, who has in fact rescued his daughter from her wicked mother.
9. In their aria "Der, welcher wandert diese Stassen" ("Whoever walks these paths"), the two men in armour reveal that Tamino will be made pure through fire, water, air, and earth. Which two of these trials do he and Pamina in fact undergo?

Answer: Fire and Water.

Tamino and Pamina must pass without fear first through fire, and then through water. In this they are protected by the magic flute, which Pamina reveals has cut from the deepest roots of an oak-tree a thousand years old. They succeed and are admitted in triumph to the fellowship of Isis and Osiris.
10. Because he thinks that he has lost Papagena, Papageno appears to sing an aria of appeal followed by despair and then fastens a rope to a tree branch, intending to hang himself. Who prevents him from committing suicide?

Answer: The three boys.

Again the three boys intervene in the plot. They suggest to Papageno that he use the silver bells, and then escort Papagena to a joyful reunion with him.
