The first single released April 1980 from the album "I Am What I Am", "He Stopped Loving Her Today" spent 18 weeks at number one on Billboard's Hot Country Singles.

It was written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putnam, produced by Billy Sherrill on Epic Records. First recorded by Johnny Russell but never released, the song ended at the conclusion of the first chorus.
