His parents were divorced during George's third grade. His mother and his sister moved away, leaving him and his brother to live with his father.

George dropped out of Southwest Texas State University, and travelled to Mexico to elope with Norma. After a few weeks, they returned to Texas to repeat their vows in a church (December 1971).

George was stationed at the Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. While in the army he joined a country band that played in local venues off the barracks. He was discharged from the army with honour in 1975.
