Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Burn It Down" was the first single from this band's fifth album, "Living Things", released in 2012. This and the previous two albums saw a shift in genre from their previous work, which included the album "Hybrid Theory" (2000). Which band is it?

Answer: Linkin Park

Linkin Park is an American band from California that formed in 1996. "Hybrid Theory" became the best-selling album of 2001, promoting the band to the mainstream. Their first two albums had a nu-metal sound, but they began to experiment from "Minutes to Midnight" (2007) onwards, and more intensely on "A Thousand Suns" (2010), which saw the introduction of more electronic elements.

Their new sound has brought in some new fans, but unfortunately has alienated some old fans, and the critical reception of "Living Things" (2012) was very mixed.
2. "Goin' Down" (1999) was the debut solo single of English singer Melanie Chisholm, hitting Number four in her home country of the UK. With which of these bands did she find fame in the late 90s?

Answer: Spice Girls

The Spice Girls were a group of five, each with a "Spice" nickname: Melanie Chisholm (Mel C) was "Sporty Spice", Emma Bunton was "Baby Spice", Melanie Brown (Mel B) was "Scary Spice", Victoria Beckham née Adams was "Posh Spice", and finally Geri Halliwell was "Ginger Spice". The group released their first two albums as a five-piece in 1996 and 1997, and their third album "Forever" was released in 2000 after Geri's departure.

Each of the Spice Girls has had some success in her solo music career. Melanie C had her first single without the group in 1998, singing "When You're Gone" with Bryan Adams. Her debut album "Northern Star" (1999) hit number four in the UK, going three times platinum. Her subsequent five albums have had less commercial success, with various positions within the UK Top 60.

"Down With The Sickness", although initially charting low, went platinum in the US, bringing the band to people's notice. The album that featured the single, "The Sickness" (2000), only hit 29 on the US Billboard 100, but the band's following four albums all debuted at Number One. Disturbed's songs have been featured on the soundtracks of some movies, including "Dracula 2000" (the song "A Welcome Burden") and "Transformers" (the song "This Moment"), and they have covered songs of big bands such as Faith No More and Judas Priest.

The single "Sugar, We're Going Down" was released in 2005 from "From Under The Cork Tree", and went two times platinum in the US.

The video for the song was directed by Matt Lenski, and featured an outcast with antlers falling in love with a girl in his neighborhood.

Canadian singer Justin Bieber shot to fame in 2007 after talent scout Scooter Braun saw a video of him singing on YouTube. "My World" was an EP released in 2009, soon followed in 2012 by a full-length album titled "My World 2.0". The song "Down To Earth" was not released individually as a single, but received much praise from critics of the album, and it managed to chart in Canada due to digital releases of the EP.

In an issue of "Billboard" magazine, Justin explained that the lyrics of the song are based on his feelings following his parents' separation. Other lines from the song include "And Mommy, you were always somewhere / Daddy, I live out of town / So tell how could I ever be normal somehow / You tell me this is for the best / So tell me why am I in tears? / So far away, and now I just need you here".

It is known for its promotion of feminism and female empowerment; the lyrics confront the double standard in society that women are looked down upon for promiscuity while men tend to be celebrated for it.

Christina's other albums include "Mi Reflejo" (2000), an album in Spanish including versions of songs from her debut album, and "My Kind of Christmas" (2000).

Other well-known songs by Clapton are "Layla" (1971), which was written based upon his unrequited love for the wife of friend George Harrison, and "Tears In Heaven" (1992), which was written about the loss of his four-year-old son Conor, who died following a fall from an apartment building.
