Shirley Bassey has been around (on the UK chart) longer than any of them and is one of the UK's few true superstars. She had a number 21 hit on the UK chart with "Goldfinger" in 1964. It reached all the way to number eight on the US pop chart in 1965. Sandie Shaw, famous at the time for performimg without shoes had a number one hit for three weeks on the UK chart with "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me". It reached number 52 on the US pop chart in 1965.

The Liverpool accent was appropriate as some of the girls came from Merseyside and were originally formed as a choir by the Liverpool based football pools company Vernons Pools in the '50s. By the time of this record they had become a trio, Jean Owen, Maureen Kennedy and Frances Lee although others joined and left the group including Lyn Cornell and Joyce Barker (wife of Marty Wilde and mother of Kim). With all the comings and goings there were a few splinter groups with one or more ex-Vernons Girls in them. One such splinter group with Lyn Cornell in the line-up was The Carefrees who had a number 39 hit with "We Love You Beatles" on the US pop chart in 1964. It failed to chart in the UK.
