Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 50s doo-wop song begins with the deep solo bass intro "do do do do DOO," followed by the lead singer voicing the song title?

Answer: Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite

If you paid attention to the quiz title, this one was easy. The Spaniels, featuring lead singer and song writer Pookie Hudson, came out with this early R&B classic in 1954. It got another charge of airplay in the 1970s after being part of the movie soundtrack for the film "American Graffiti." None of the other choices is a 1950s doo-wop song.
2. This young singer, who had a hit with "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes," filled in for Buddy Holly after Holly died in a tragic plane crash in 1958. Name the replacement.

Answer: Bobby Vee

Bobby Vee, born 1943 in Fargo, ND as Robert Velline, responded to a call for local talent when it was decided to continue with the scheduled rock and roll show Holly's plane crash had put in doubt. Also killed in the 1959 crash in Iowa were budding star Richie Valens and J.P. Richardson, the "Big Bopper." The three musicians had chartered the small plane to take them to Fargo in time for the concert, and it went down in bad weather.
3. Which recording artist, backed by The Silver Bullet Band, recorded the song "Night Moves" in 1976?

Answer: Bob Seger

Seger wrote and then recorded the tune as something of an afterthought while finishing up a recording session in Toronto. Some of his band mates had already left, so a session guitarist and bassist along with female back up singers were recruited to pitch in. The song was named by Rolling Stone magazine as best single for 1977.
4. What was the 1980s beer company advertising campaign which featured Phil Collins' song "Something In The Air Tonight."?

Answer: The Night Belongs To Michelob

Michelob continued a 1980s trend, disturbing to rock music purists, in which rock songs were the focal point of ads for commercial products. It can be annoying when a great song gets overplayed and then identified with a commercial, but the artist has the right to sell his work for any venue he chooses.

This particular campaign also used Genesis' "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," as well as songs by Roberta Flack, Eric Clapton and others.
5. This song by the Bee Gees accompanied John Travolta as he danced his way into disco history in a famous 1970s film with a similar title.

Answer: Night Fever

The song "Night Fever" was front and center on the soundtrack from the late 1977 hit film "Saturday Night Fever," starring John Travolta at the height of the disco craze. The song reached number one on the UK charts and occupied top position on Billboard's Hot 100 for two months in 1978.
6. What is true and notable about Eric Clapton's 1970 hit "After Midnight"?

Answer: Written by J.J. Cale, whose career it rejuvenated

The song was written by J.J. Cale and it appeared on the album "Eric Clapton," released in the US in August of 1970. Cale, a struggling bluesman at the time, heard his tune on the radio and realized he was going to finally make some money. Using the royalties he received, he was then able to come out with his own album, "Naturally," in 1972. Clapton recorded several other Cale songs including "Cocaine."
7. What word or phrase completes the title of The Drifters 1964 hit "Saturday Night At ______?

Answer: The Movies

The Drifters were one of the most popular 1960s era R&B groups on the recording scene. Between 1959 and 1964 they landed sixteen records on the Billboard Top 40 charts, including "Save The last Dance For Me," which hit number one in 1960. They also had several different lead singers including Ben E. King, who had a successful solo career after leaving the group.
8. Which of the following is an actual Beatles original song title (from 1965)?

Answer: The Night Before

"The Night Before" is a song from "Help!", the Beatles' fifth UK album. It's a classic call/response, featuring Paul McCartney's lead vocal with John Lennon and George Harrison doing harmonies and Lennon on electric piano. The other choices are fabrications, although the Beatles did record a song called "Eight DAYS a Week."
9. Three of the following are real album cuts from the 1970s, correctly matched to the artist. Which one is NOT?

Answer: "Go Down Tonight" - Bob Dylan

"Go Down Tonight" is a made up song title. "Night" is on Springsteen's iconic 1975 album "Born To Run"; "Night Time..." is from the 1976 Zevon album "Excitable Boy"; "Tonight's The Night" is from Stewart's 1976 "A Night On The Town" album.
10. What song was written by a Zulu musician in 1939, was adapted and covered by The Kingston Trio in the 1950s, was a number one UK and USA doo-wop smash in 1961, and was used in one of the most successful animated films of all time?

Answer: The Lion Sleeps Tonight

"The Lion Sleeps Tonight (English title)," also known as "Wimoweh" and written by Solomon Linda, is one of the African songs most covered by an international array of artists including The Weavers, Jimmy Dorsey and Miriam Makeba. Linda was working for the Gallo Record Company in Johannesburg in the 1920s and singing in a choir when he created the unique chant and wailing falsetto which make the song unique.

The Tokens scored the 1961 hit, and the film in question is "The Lion King." Linda's descendants sued the Disney conglomerate in a dispute over finances generated by the movie and its use of the song.
