Here's the Hideaways Trivia Quiz

Can you name the 60s band reckoned to have played Liverpool's famous Cavern Club more than any other? The Beatles? Think again. It's the Hideaways, of whom you've probably never heard. I hope this quiz goes a tiny way towards redressing that balance.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The group was formed in 1963 by 17-year-olds Ozzie Yue, John Shell and John Donaldson. How had they met?

Answer: They were at school together

Ozzie Yue remembered his school days during a 2007 interview:
"I took the 11-plus and moved to the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, a grammar school that is now the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Paul McCartney and George Harrison were in the Upper School when I was in the Lower. During my first year, Paul used to go to the art class during free periods and sit opposite me. I would flick pieces of paper at him" (Source: "The Independent", 11 January 2007).
2. Later, in 1963, the Hideaways expanded to take in Frankie Connor and, in 1964, Judd Lander on harmonica. How did they come by their name?

Answer: They chose it to blag a booking at Liverpool's Hideaway club.

The Hideaway coffee bar was in Red Cross Street, not far from Pier Head. The plan worked. An existing booking had fallen through and the owner let them play. Frankie Connor went on to become a presenter with BBC Radio Merseyside.
3. The Merseybeat scene in the early 60s could be fairly "incestuous". In which of these ways did the Hideaways interlink with the Beatles?

Answer: All of these answers are true

Band members Ozzie Yue, John Shell and John Donaldson all attended Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, although they were five years behind Paul and George. The Beatles and the Hideaways did not overlap at the Cavern. The Beatles' last appearance was on 3rd August 1963 whilst the Hideaways did not appear there until the following year. Judd Lander played harmonica on John Lennon's album "Rock 'n' Roll" (1975), and on the McCartney album "Flowers in the Dirt" (1989).
4. "Tick-a-tick-a _______ tra la la". Which company used the Hideaways in a commercial that was filmed at the Cavern in 1964?

Answer: Timex

The band received no fee for performing but was rewarded with TV exposure and a Timex watch each - from the cheap end of the range! The commercial is still fondly remembered by many Britons of a certain age, even if they don't know the name of the band that was playing.
5. On 27 February 1966, the Cavern's DJ, Bob Wooler, announced to gathered fans that the venue would be closing that night due to unpaid debts. What was the Hideaways' response?

Answer: The band played through the night as fans barricaded themselves in.

"'On this particular Sunday night, I was on the door. It was a dismal evening with not many people in. Ray [Owner Ray McFall] said that the bailiffs were coming the next morning. It was so sudden. I told the kids from the stage that the place was closing. I said that they could resist the bailiffs but once the police came, they had to walk out. I said, 'Get all the chairs on the staircase, interlock the legs and make it hard for them.' It was an all night session.'" (Source: BBC Radio Merseyside, Paddy Delaney (the Cavern's legendary doorman)interviewed by Spencer Leigh, 2007).

Word spread around Liverpool and the club got fuller and fuller as the night wore on. A protest march followed in the morning but to no avail. The venue reopened in July 1966 under new owners. The Hideaways were the last band to play on the original Cavern stage (which was dismantled in the interim) and the first band to play at the new Cavern Club when it reopened.
6. The Hideaways struggled to attract interest from record companies. Did they ever release a single under their own name?

Answer: No

By the mid-1960s, the British music business had moved on and the Merseybeat sound was a thing of the past. That should have been to the Hideaways' advantage as they had an R&B style but they were let down by agents that tried to promote them under the Merseybeat banner and record companies that pigeonholed them without even listening to their demos.
7. In 1967, American-born John Shell died tragically young at the age of 20. How was he killed?

Answer: He died in the Vietnam War.

Although John was born in Arkansas, his mother Mary, a G.I. bride, returned to Liverpool when he was two years old. Nevertheless he felt a sense of duty that led him to join the 1st Infantry Division. It must have been a very strong pull because he left a pregnant wife behind him. John was killed in action less than a month later. His grave is in Anfield Cemetery.

Frankie Connor co-wrote a song about John called "Poor Boy from Liverpool".
8. In 1970, the then line-up of the Hideaways released a single under the name of Confucious. What is the name of this song that shares a name with a J.S. Bach composition?

Answer: Brandenburg Concerto

"Brandenburg Concerto (That's What It Was)" sold well in Liverpool, but failed to dent the national or international charts. Musically, it is a wonderfully infectious slice of meaningless bubblegum as illustrated by the following lyric from the song's chorus:

"The Brandenburg Concerto, that's what it was. I misunderstood the whole thing because I couldn't catch the words and the woman with the tuba was swinging like the Wizard of Oz".

That song represents the only record that the Hideaways ever released albeit under a change of name.
9. Ozzie Yue went on to enjoy a career in acting. He has appeared in a spin-off series from which of these UK soaps that, like the Hideaways, also had its roots in the 1960s?

Answer: Coronation Street

After the Hideaways, Ozzie went onto join another Liverpool band called Supercharge. They didn't enjoy any chart success in the UK but did score a top three hit in Australia with "You've Gotta Get Up and Dance" (1976). Supercharge were also one of the bands to play on the last night of the original Cavern Club, 27th May 1973.

The spin-off series was "The Brothers McGregor" which ran in the UK from 1985 until 1988. Ozzie played Mr Ho. His movie credits include "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider", "Croupier" and "Nuns on the Run". On the small screen he has appeared in "Father Ted", "Silent Witness" and "All Quiet on the Preston Front".
10. Judd Lander has had a highly successful career in the music business both as a session musician and as a PR executive. On which of these classic songs did he play, noted for its harmonica intro?

Answer: Karma Chameleon

Judd Lander has played with acts as diverse as the Eurythmics, Mike Oldfield, the Beach Boys, Tina Turner and the Spice Girls. As a PR executive he worked at Chrysalis, CBS and Warner Brothers before launching his own agency in 2000.
