Answer: The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys had the original version, released in 1964. It was the "B" side to "Help Me Rhonda". The song peaked at number 24 on the Billboard U.S. charts. Thomas had better luck it, reaching number two on the charts in 1977. The Beach Boys version is listed at number 176 on Rolling Stone Magazine's "Greatest Songs Of All Time".

Answer: The Ronettes

The Ronettes had this hit back in the fall of 1964, taking it to number 24 on the Billboard U.S. charts. The 1964 version won a Grammy award for Best Sound Effects which was the only Grammy ever won by Phil Spector.

The Temptations' version of this song was produced by Smokey Robinson, and reached number 29 on the Billboard charts in 1966. (Their label was actually "Rare Earth Records", which was a subsidiary of Motown).

Berry's hit is from way back in 1956, and was released as a B-side to a song called "Drifting Heart". It has been covered numerous times, and is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's "Greatest Songs Of All Time" at number 97.

Easy to slip up on this one. Kenner's version was actually the original which he wrote and recorded in 1962. The song met with a minimum of success that year although it did chart on Billboard's Top 100. The more popular version was set down in 1965 by Cannibal and The Headhunters which reached number 30. Pickett's version proved to be the biggest hit of the three, reaching number six in 1966.

This Phil Spector produced recording was first introduced by The Crystals in 1963. Written by the immortal songwriting team of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, the song was a number three hit that year. Cassidy's version, in 1977, became a number one tune. The tune needed to be slightly altered in order to be sung from a male perspective, rather than female, as the original version was.

Redding's version was the most popular, peaking at number four in 1967. The song itself was written in 1932, and has been recorded by such varied artists as Jimmy Durante, Frank Sinatra, Al Jarreau, Rod Stewart and Tina Turner. Redding's version is generally acknowleged as the most successful and is listed on Billboards "500 Greatest Hits Of All Time" at number 204. Three Dog Night's version, from 1969, made it to number 29 on the Billboard U.S. charts.
