Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy one to start with - cartoon characters The Archies topped the charts in 1969 with which song?

Answer: "Sugar Sugar"

One of the voices behind The Archies, and co-writer of "Sugar Sugar", was singer Andy Kim, who charted as a solo artist with "Rock Me Gently" and "Baby, I Love You".
2. The Wombles, those furry, rubbish clearing creatures from Wimbledon Common, wombled their way into the charts on several occasions. What was the title of their biggest hit single?

Answer: "Wombling Merry Christmas"

The Wombles were created by Elisabeth Beresford in 1968, with Bernard Cribbins providing the narration for this staple of childrens 70s television. The man to blame for their musical career was one Mike Batt who composed the theme and all of their hits. Well known guitarist Chris Spedding appeared on "Top of the Pops" in a Womble costume during their hit making years. I'm not sure if he ever lived it down!
3. Which Muppet featured on the 1977 single "Halfway Down The Stairs"?

Answer: Robin

Robin, voiced by Jerry Nelson, was the nephew of Kermit the Frog. "Halfway Down The Stairs" reached number 7 in the UK charts.
4. What kind of day did the little Smurfs have in 1978?

Answer: Dippety

The Smurfs were created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford in 1958. These blue skinned elves have had much success worldwide with their popular animated cartoons. The Smurfs first visited the UK charts in 1978 with "The Smurf Song", swiftly followed by "Dippety Day" and the obligatory Christmas hit, "Christmas In Smurfland".
5. Who was the ventriloquist who voiced Orville the Duck on his "Orville's Song" hit?

Answer: Keith Harris

Keith Harris and Orville (a green duck who always wore a nappy) first appeared on British television screens in 1982, with "Orville's Song" reaching number 4 in the December of that year. Keith and Orville, along with Cuddles the monkey, can still be seen in pantomine on occasions today.
6. It's amazing just what will become a hit record. In 1982 The Singing Sheep, (In reality some computerised sheep sounds) had a minor hit with which well known nursery rhyme?

Answer: "Baa Baa Black Sheep"

As well as the Singing Sheep, we were also blessed with the Singing Dogs, back in 1955. It could be argued that they took up valuable chart space from more deserving songs!
7. What was the name of the singing, rapping rodent whose hits include "Rat Rapping" and "Love Me Tender"?

Answer: Roland

Roland, along with Kevin the Gerbil and Errol the Hamster, appeared on the breakfast television show "Good Morning, Britain" in the early 1980s, and became popular with both children and adults for his rapping and catchphrases.
8. Those latex puppets from the TV show "Spitting Image" scored themselves a number one in 1986 with which hit?

Answer: "The Chicken Song"

"Spitting Image" was a satirical, topical television show which ran from 1984 to 1996. Some of the voices behind the latex puppets include Harry Enfield, Chris Barrie and Rory Bremner. "The Chicken Song" was a parody of those holiday type hits by Black Lace, "Agadoo" and "Do The Conga".
9. Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers first three singles all went to number one.

Answer: True

Two men (Andy Pickles and Les Hemstock) and a giant bunny, did indeed manage three number ones with their first three singles in 1989. The records were all medleys of previous hit singles.
10. What was the title of The Simpsons 1991 number one?

Answer: "Do The Bartman"

The hugely popular "Simpsons", had two hits from "The Simpsons Sing The Blues" album, "Deep Deep Trouble" being the other one. Most people know that the voice of Bart Simpson is provided by Nancy Cartwright, but a couple of years ago I read an article somewhere that stated that Angela Cartwright was the voice of Bart. Angela, of course, was the young lady in "The Sound Of Music" and the TV series "Lost In Space". I'm not sure where the writer got their information from for that one!
11. That large pink and yellow spotted blundering blob known as "Mr Blobby" somehow managed to go all the way to number one with his self titled hit, driving most of the UK barmy in 1993! Which television show, hosted by Noel Edmonds, was responsible for this character?

Answer: "Noel's House Party"

In the media during September 2003, Noel Edmonds said that he felt he might have been partly responsible for a decline in British television standards. With the promotion of the dreaded Mr Blobby, no one has yet argued with him!
12. Pinky and Perky, those well known little pigs, covered which song for their 1993 hit?

Answer: "Reet Petite"

Another staple of 60s childrens television, the two singing piglet puppets recorded many albums of cover versions, but had to wait until 1993 before "Reet Petite" became a hit for them. "Johnny Reggae" was the title of a hit by The Piglets, who were a female band and had nothing to do with pigs!
13. Which character from "South Park" had a number one in 1999 with "Chocolate Salty Balls"?

Answer: Chef

Singer Isaac Hayes had previously hit the charts (under his own name, of course) with the "Theme From Shaft" and "Disco Connection" in the 1970s. "South Park" also spawned another hitmaker in Mr Hankey, who reached number 4 in 1999 with a jolly Christmas song. He most probably ranks as the most unusual "artist" to ever have had a hit single!
14. The Tweenies, characters from a childrens TV show, said they believed in what in 2001?

Answer: Christmas

The Tweenies - Bella, Fizz, Jake and Milo, have graced the charts on several occasions, their first hit being "Number 1" in 2000. "I Believe In Christmas" reached the top ten in December 2001.
15. Much loved amongst pre-school children, TV character "Bob The Builder" had number one hits in 2000 and 2001, including a version of "Mambo No5". Which actor voices the little Mr Fix-It?

Answer: Neil Morrissey

Best known for his "Men Behaving Badly" television series with Martin Clunes, Neil Morrissey has voiced the little building contractor in both the TV series and on record. I have just realised that I have not mentioned the Teletubbies and their hit record, but perhaps I will save them for another quiz!
