Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the Treble Clef staff, what is the note on the bottom line called?

Answer: E

There is a little way of remembering where the notes on the Treble Clef staff are. The notes on the lines go EGBDF reading up. And the notes in the spaces spell FACE reading up.
2. OK then so, on the Treble Clef staff, what is the note on the second space from the bottom?

Answer: A

Since the note is on a space and on the Treble Clef staff, we would use FACE. F A oh, there it is. The C is on the third space just like it is the third letter in FACE.
3. Alright, let's move on to Bass Clef. What is the note on the line at the top of a Bass Clef staff?

Answer: A

The Bass Clef notes are different than the Treble Clef notes. The lines go GBDFA reading up, and the spaces go ACEG reading up.
4. What note is on the middle line of the Bass Clef scale?

Answer: D

Since we are talking about the lines, we would use GBDFA. G B D, there we go. The D is on the middle line of the scale just like it is the middle letter in GBDFA.
5. Now to talk about the different types of notes. What type of note has a normal stalk and a filled in circle?

Answer: Quarter note

The quarter note is used to represent one quarter of a measure. There can be up to four in a measure in 4/4 time.
6. What type of note looks just like a quarter note but the circle isn't filled in?

Answer: Half note

The half note lasts for half a measure or two counts. It is equivalent to two quarter notes. There can be up to two in a measure in 4/4 time.
7. What type of note looks just like a quarter note but has a little flag hanging off the stalk?

Answer: Eighth note

An eighth note will last for half a count. It is equivalent to a half of a quarter note. There can be up to eight of them in a measure in 4/4 time.
8. What note looks just like a half note but is missing a stalk?

Answer: Whole note

A whole note will last for four counts. It is equivalent to four quarter notes. There can only be one in each measure of 4/4 time.
9. Now to move on. What type of rest looks like a demented number three?

Answer: Quarter rest

A rest stands for an absence of sound. A quarter rest, just like a quarter note, lasts for one count. There can be up to four in a measure in 4/4 time.
10. Finally, what does a little dot next to a note or rest do to the note/rest?

Answer: Add another half of the note/rest to it

A dot makes any note or rest 1.5 times longer than it was before. For example, a half note is two counts so a dotted half note must be three counts. Half of two is one and two plus one is three.
