Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Hank was it? "Hey, Good Lookin'"

Answer: Hank Williams

"Hey, Good Lookin'" was recorded in 1951, and became Hank's sixth tune to reach number one on the Hot Country 100.

"Say hey, good lookin', what ya got cookin'
How's about cooking somethin' up with me
Hey, sweet baby , don't you think maybe
We can find us a brand new recipe"

Hank also recorded under the name of Luke the Drifter. Those songs were for the most part spoken, with an accompaniment of a pipe organ. The songs always had a moral message. A few great examples of these are "Pictures from Life's Other Side", "Too Many Parties and Too Many Pals", and my favorite, "Be Careful of Stones That You Throw".
2. Which Hank wrote and sang "Family Tradition"?

Answer: Hank Williams, Jr.

"Family Tradition" was a song about him inheriting his father's bad habits.

"So don't ask me, Hank why do you drink?
Hank, why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
Stop and think it over, try and put yourself in my unique position,
If I get stoned and sing all night long, it's a family tradition"
3. Hank's very first recording was "Humpty Dumpty Heart", but which Hank was it?

Answer: Hank Thompson

"Humpty Dumpty Heart" made it to number two on the Hot Country 100 in 1948.

Hank had a stellar career spanning 34 years. He recorded 159 singles, 78 of which charted on the Billboard Country hot 100.

"I've got a Humpty Dumpty heart
You dropped it and broke it apart
All the king's horses, all the king's men
Could never put it together again
But when I gave to you my heart
You said that we must part
That was my doom, my heart went boom
I've got a Humpty Dumpty heart"
4. One of my favorite tunes, "The Wild Side of Life" was recorded by Hank, but which one?

Answer: Hank Thompson

"The Wild Side of Life", recorded in 1952, was Hank's first number one hit on the Hot 100 chart, and has been covered often.
"I didn't know God made honky-tonk angels,
I might have known you'd never make a wife,
You gave up the only one that ever loved you
And went back to the wild side of life"

Kitty Wells recorded and answer to it four months later, also HER first recording, and also a number one hit.
"It wasn't god who made honky-tonk angels,
As you wrote in the words of your song,
Too many times married men think they're still single,
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong."
5. Hank cut a duet effort with Anita Carter. "Down the Trail of Aching Hearts" was the A-side, and "Bluebird Island" was the B-side. I ask you, Hank who?

Answer: Hank Snow

Anita Carter was the daughter of Mother Maybelle Carter and sister of June Carter Cash.
Hank Snow was born Clarence Snow on May 9, 1914 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada.
He was known as the Singing Ranger. His band was known as the Rainbow Ranch Boys.

"Once I was passing your window
Under the light of a star
Somebody else played my love song
And played it on my old guitar"
6. "Please Help Me, I'm Falling" was a huge hit for which Hank?

Answer: Hank Locklin

Also a chart-topper in 1960, and also much-covered.
I especially like the Patty Loveless cover.

Hank was born in 1918 in McLellan, Florida. He joined the Louisiana Hayride show in the late forties, where he was known, puzzlingly, as the Rocky Mountain Boy. He was made a member of the Grand Ole' Opry in 1960.

"Please help me I'm falling in love with you
Close the door to temptation don't let me walk through
Turn away from me darling I'm begging you to
Please help me I'm falling in love with you"
7. "Standing in the Shadows" is an early release of this Hank.

Answer: Hank Williams, Jr.

"Standing in the Shadows" is another song written about Junior's music heritage.

"Yes, I know that I'm not great
And some say, I imitate
Anymore I don't know
I'm just doing the best I can
It's hard standing in the shadows
Of a very famous man"
8. Which Hank had a hit with "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive"?

Answer: Hank Williams

This song was released just one month before Hank's death at age 29.

"My fishin' pole's broke, the creek is full of sand
My woman ran away with another man
No matter how I struggle and strive
I'll never get out of this world alive"

Hank was dismissed from the Grand Ole' Opry in August of 1952 for showing up drunk and high too many times.
Williams died on New Year's Day, 1953, of heart failure. He was 29 years old.
9. Which Hank gave us the much-covered song, "A Fool Such As I"?

Answer: Hank Snow

"A fool Such As I" has been covered by the likes of Tommy Edwards, Jo Stafford,
Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley.

"Pardon me, if I'm sentimental
When we say goodbye
Don't be angry with me should I cry
When you're gone, yet I'll dream
A little dream as years go by
Now and then there's a fool such as I"
10. Choose the Hank that gave us "The Older the Violin, the Sweeter the Music".

Answer: Hank Thompson

This tune was recorded in 1974, and was his last top-ten effort.

"These specks of gray that's in my hair just make me look distinguished
They don't mean I'm over the hill baby I'm not extinguished
There's plenty of young girls waiting for my love honey they won't refuse it
They know the older the violin the sweeter the music"
11. I know which Hank sang this'n; do you? "Send Me the Pillow that You Dream On"

Answer: Hank Locklin

This is another of my favorites.

It was covered by Pop, Country and Bluegrass artists, including Johnny Tillotson and Dean Martin.

I crooned this tune in a talent contest when I was twelve. I didn't win...

"Each night while I'm sleeping oh, so lonely
I'll share your love in dreams that once were true
Send me the pillow that you dream on
So darling, I can dream on it, too"
12. Can you pick the correct Hank? The tune is "The Gold Rush is Over".

Answer: Hank Snow

Hank Snow was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. He enjoyed a performing and recording career that spanned over 50 years.

"You've been out prospecting all around on the side
But this old mule now has had his last ride
So start walking woman 'cause your grubstake is gone
The gold rush is over and the bum's rush is on"
13. During and after the Second World War there were quite a number of country songs about girls that our servicemen met, and fell in love with, overseas. There were songs about German girls, French girls, Filipino girls, and of course, Japanese girls. Which Hank sang about a "Geisha Girl"?

Answer: Hank Locklin

Hank Locklin was another of those Country entertainers whose career spanned more than 50 years. He passed on in 2009 at the age of 91.

"They read it in the tea leaves and it's written in the sand
I found love by the heart full in a foreign distant land
Tell the home folks that I'm happy with someone that's true I know
I love a pretty Geisha girl where the ocean breezes blow"
14. Remember that classic 1908 Leadbelly tune, "Goodnight Irene"? One of these Hanks recorded "Wake Up, Irene", which became a number one hit for him. Pick the correct Hank.

Answer: Hank Thompson

I can't find a record of this one ever being covered.

"For months and months and months around the country
Everybody sang Irene goodnight
But she wouldn't go to bed, no matter what they said
though everybody tried with all their might
She stayed awake while steel guitars were a-going
In every honky-tonk she could be seen
but she finally went to bed and covered up her head
and now there's not a thing can wake Irene"
15. Hang in there, last one! Which of our Hanks sang "I'd Rather be Gone (Than in Your Way)"?

Answer: Hank Williams, Jr.

This tune climbed to number four on the Country Hot 100 in 1964.
"I feel like a stranger in this home I built for you
And I can't understand this awful change you're going through
And lately I've been watching you grow colder every day
And I'd rather be gone than in your way"

The Hank Williams Jr. song, "Are You Ready", that had opened "Monday Night Football" for 20 years was pulled in 2011 after he made a comparison of President Obama to Adolph Hitler in a "Fox and Friends" rant.
