While reading the list of the inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I was struck by how many of its members have performed with one another, shared spouses/lovers and had life paths crossed in other ways over the years. I hope you do, too!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rock superstars Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page are multiple inductees in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Clapton as a solo artist and with Cream, Page with Led Zepplin, and both of them with the Yardbirds who scored a big hit with "For Your Love" in 1965. Which virtuoso guitarist, who was inducted into the R & R Hall of Fame in 2009 as a solo artist, can also claim the Yardbirds on his resume?

Answer: Jeff Beck

Neither Clapton, Beck nor Page were original members of the Yardbirds when the band formed in June, 1963. Clapton joined about four months afterward but quit in early 1965 over his objection to the band's veering from their blues origins into pop. He would go on to join Cream, Derek and the Dominoes and Blind Faith.

Clapton was replaced by Beck who influenced later guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix. Page joined the band in 1966 and the Yardbirds entered into what many afficionados consider to be their golden period, with two 'world-class' guitarists in the group.

After the band broke up in 1968 Page founded Led Zepplin and Beck achieved success with The Jeff Beck Group, the Honeydrippers and as a solo musician.

The other musicians who were inducted as part of the Yardbirds into the Rock and Roll Hall of Rame in 1992 were Chris Dreja, Jim McCarty, Keith Relf and Paul Samwell-Smith.
2. The names Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley may not be as familiar as the name of the duet they became in the early 60s. What is the name of the famous duo?

Answer: The Righteous Brothers

According to their biography in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Righteous Brothers defined 'blue-eyed soul.' Their hits included "You're My Soul and My Inspiration", "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost That Lovin Feelin." Medley also scored a hit with Jennifer Warnes in 1987 with "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", from "Dirty Dancing".
3. Music producer Brian Eno has been quoted as saying that the band consisting of Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale and Maureen Tucker was so ahead of its time that even though they didn't sell many albums, everyone who bought one went on to form their own band. Legendary groups such as the Sex Pistols, Talking Heads and U2 have cited this group as a major influence in their style. Name the band.

Answer: The Velvet Underground

The Velvet Underground achieved a hip urban fame when they became the "house band" at Andy Warhol's Factory in the mid-1960s. Their songs reflected previously taboo subjects in white-bread American society such as drug usage, paranoia, sexual proclivities and urban nihilism. The group's fourth album "Loaded" never charted in the top 200 yet two of the songs, "Sweet Jane" and "Rock and Roll" have become rock classics.

1972's "Walk on the Wild Side" is commonly attributed to the Velvets but was in reality a solo effort by frontman Lou Reed.
4. The Stone Poneys, a folk rock trio that started in Los Angeles, had a big hit with the song "Different Drum" in 1967. Their lead singer went on to success in an incredible span of musical genres including country rock, big band, jazz and on Broadway. Who was this talented lady?

Answer: Linda Ronstadt

Ronstadt has been a major influence in the music industry in a 40+ year career that has included a leading role on Broadway in "The Pirates of Penzance", a trio of best-selling big band albums recorded with legendary orchestra leader Nelson Riddle and two hit country rock albums with her friends Dolly Parton and EmmyLou Harris. Ronstadt also has recorded mariachi, Latin-American, blues, pop and jazz albums. Incredibly, though she has been the highest earning woman in rock (1978), was one of the first rock artists (male or female) to have a double-platinum album and has had more million-selling albums than several members already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Linda Ronstadt has not yet been inducted.

For that matter, neither have Pat Benatar, Cher, Carole King (as an artist) or Carly Simon.
5. Though he was born Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna, Jr. this founding member of Mötley Crüe is better known by another name. What does the author of "The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star" answer to these days?

Answer: Nikki Sixx

Motley Crue was started in Los Angeles in 1981. Its' members have received as much publicity for their lifestyles as for their music. Their biggest selling albums were 1983's 'Shout at the Devil', 'Theatre of Pain' from 1985 and 'Girls, Girls, Girls' in 1987.

Sixx's memoir was taken from journal entries he wrote at the peak of his heroin addiction. Interestingly, after each passage there was a present day follow-up written by Motley Crue members, ex-lovers and others commenting on their perception of the events Sixx had described.
6. David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls, Nigel Tufnel and Viv Savage were the members of which British band whose albums included "Smell the Glove" and which had a series of drummers who each died under odd circumstances?

Answer: Spinal Tap

The band, of course, is fictional. The main characters in "This is Spinal Top" were played by Michael McKeon (St. Hubbins), Harry Shearer (Smalls) and Christopher Guest (Tufnel) who also wrote the 1984 film. Cameo roles were filled by Guest-directed movie regulars Fred Willard and Ed Begley, Jr. as well as Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, Bruno Kirby, Howard Hesseman, Patrick Macnee, Anjelica Huston, Dana Carvey and Billy Crystal.
7. The Traveling Wilburys was a folk rock band comprised of famous musician friends who recorded two albums in the late 1980s. The members were Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison and which former lead man of the Electric Light Orchestra?

Answer: Jeff Lynne

According the Mo Austin, chairman of the board of Warner Bros. Records, the group came to be when George Harrison needed to record a "B" side to his single "This is Love" from the "Cloud Nine" album. Harrison and the song's co-writer, Lynne, were hanging at Bob Dylan's studio with friends Petty and Orbison.

He asked his friends to help him knock off a song while they were all in the studio. The resulting number "Handle With Care" was so good that Cloud Nine's producer urged a full collaboration and The Traveling Wilburys were born.

A third volume (The Traveling Wilburys III) was recorded following Orbison's death.
8. In 1978 the punk/new wave band the Misfits was founded by Charlotte Caffey, Margot Olaverra, Belinda Carlisle, Jane Weidlin and Elissa Bello. A year later Bello was replaced by Gina Schock and the band changed its name to one that is much more familiar today. Which band is this that scored hits like "Our Lips Are Sealed"?

Answer: The Go-Gos

The Go-Gos were the first all-female band to top the charts that also played their own instruments and produced their own music. Their first album 'Beauty and the Beat' (1981) is considered a new wave classic. They followed it up the next year with 'Vacation' which included the hit title track. The band had reached their peak and folded in 1985.

Lead singer Carlisle has had the most solo success, including the hit singles 'Heaven is a Place on Earth' (#1 Billboard, Dec. 1987) and 'Mad About You' which reached #3 on Billboard in 1986. That same year she married producer Morgan Mason, son of legendary British actor James Mason.
9. Its hardly unheard of for a celebrity to start a vanity band. Which of these actors is NOT a member of the band they are paired with?

Answer: Drew Barrymore - Buddha and the Chocolate Factory

Pinkett plays with Wicked Wisdom (founded in 2002) as Jada Koren. The Lt. Dan Band, featuring Sinise and fellow Steppenwolf Theater member Kimo Williams, has played for USO shows and at military bases in the US and overseas. The name of Crowe's band is said to come from a movie industry term for dubbing sound over a scene. 'Buddha and the Chocolate Box' was an album released by Cat Stevens in 1974.
10. And lastly, though this woman was never IN a band, she wrote a best-selling 1987 memoir about her experiences being WITH the band. Who is the author of "I'm With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie" about her days with Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, Waylon Jennings, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page and other rockers?

Answer: Pamela Des Barres

Born Pamela Miller, Des Barres was referred to as "Miss Pamela". She and her groupie/performance art troup the GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously) have been referenced as the basis for the characters of Penny Lane and her fellow "Band Aids" in the 2000 film "Almost Famous." Des Barres's early life was also seen as the inspiration, in part, for 2002's "The Banger Sisters."

She married actor/glam rocker Michael Des Barres in 1978 and has written several other books, both fiction and non-fiction, chronicling the backstage rock lifestyle.
