Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which group had a 1971 UK hit with the single "Alexander Graham Bell"?

Answer: The Sweet

"Alexander Graham Bell" peaked at No. 33 in the UK charts in October 1971. With such lyrics as "Telephone, telephone, never be on your own" it's not hard to see why it had limited success!

The group were known as The Sweet on albums before 1974 and singles before 1975, after which time they were known simply as Sweet.
2. Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" is about which political figure?

Answer: Dr Martin Luther King Jr

"Happy Birthday" was released in 1980. It was a contribution from Stevie Wonder in support of the campaign to have Dr King's birthday celebrated as a National Holiday. The campaign was successful and Martin Luther King Jr day is celebrated in the US on the third Monday of January each year, 15th January being Dr King's birthday.
3. Two famous "people" for the price of one here. Who had a hit with "Snoopy Vs the Red Baron"?

Answer: The Royal Guardsmen

"Snoopy Vs the Red Baron" reached No. 2 on the US Billboard charts in December 1966 and No. 6 in the UK chart in February 1967. The Royal Guardsmen were a rock band from Florida and had very limited chart success, most of it down to Snoopy. They also released songs called "Snoopy's Christmas" and "Snoopy for President".

The real name of the Red Baron (a WWI fighter pilot) was Manfred Von Richthofen.
4. A picture of vaudeville star Lily Bayliss featured in a single by which group?

Answer: The Who

"Pictures of Lily" reached No. 5 in the UK charts in 1967. It didn't make much impact on the US charts, partly because a lot of radio stations refused to play it due to its suggestive content. I have been unable to find out anything about Lily Bayliss herself - her claim to fame seems to come from the song!
5. The Adverts had a UK hit in 1977 singing about which convicted murderer?

Answer: Gary Gilmore

"Gary Gilmore's Eyes" reached No. 18 in the UK charts. Gary Gilmore was the first person to be executed in the US after the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976. He ordered his lawyers to drop their appeals into his sentence. He chose to die by firing squad as opposed to hanging, and requested that his corneas be used for transplantation purposes after his death.
6. Boney M sang about which religious figure in 1978?

Answer: Rasputin

Altogether now - "Ra Ra Rasputin, lover of the Russian Queen". Definitely earworm material. Sorry about that! "Rasputin" reached No. 2 in the UK charts in 1978. Boney M are still performing today and are very popular in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
7. The Electric Light Orchestra reached No. 6 in the UK charts in 1973 with a cover version of a song about which classical composer?

Answer: Beethoven

"Roll Over Beethoven" was originally a hit for Chuck Berry in 1956. He wrote the song in protest at his sister using the family piano to play classical music when he wanted to play something a little more up to date.
8. Herman's Hermits went to No. 1 in the UK charts in 1965 with a song with the same name as which British monarch?

Answer: Henry VIII

"I'm Henry VIII I Am" was originally a music hall song, the signature tune of Harry Champion. The song has nothing to do with the monarch but is sung by a man whose wife has been married seven times previously.

"I got married to the widow next door, she's been married seven times before. Every one was a Henery, she wouldn't have a Willy or a Sam, I'm her eighth old man named Henery, Henery the eighth I am"."
9. Peter Gabriel reached No. 38 in the UK charts in 1980 with the song "Biko", about Stephen Biko, who died in police custody in 1977. In what country did his death take place?

Answer: South Africa

"Biko" was also used as part of the soundtrack of the 1987 film "Cry Freedom".

Stephen Biko suffered serious head injuries while in police custody. He was moved 1200 miles in a police landrover after suffering the injuries, and died shortly after arriving at Pretoria prison. South African authorities initially tried to blame his death on the result of a hunger strike
10. According to a song from Nirvana's 1993 Album "In Utero", which actress will have her revenge on Seattle?

Answer: Frances Farmer

Troubled actress Frances Farmer was born in Seattle in 1913. She is not actually mentioned by name in the song entitled "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle". Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love's daughter Frances Bean is rumoured to have been named after Frances Farmer, but Ms Love avers that she was named after Frances McKee of The Vaselines. Ms Love is also rumoured to have worn one of Frances Farmer's old dresses at her wedding to Kurt Cobain.
