Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is not one of the steps to the dance described in "Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega?

Answer: "Twist clockwise then undo."

The song was originally released in 1949 by Dámaso Pérez Prado, a Cuban composer, although it was introduced to new audiences by Lou Bega in 1999.
2. In the Beatles hit song "Hey Jude," what is Jude instructed to do with a sad song?

Answer: "Make it better"

"Hey Jude" was written by Paul McCartney for John Lennon's son Julian, who was having a hard time coping with his parents' divorce. It spent nine weeks at the top of the charts in 1968.
3. Where does the writer of the ad in Rupert Holmes' song "Escape: The Pina Colada Song" say you should meet her "to plan our escape?"

Answer: "A bar called O'Malley's"

In this song, the singer is bored with his "lady" and seeks a new love when he reads the ad in the paper, which is the chorus of the song. Later when they meet up, he discovers that his would-be mistress is really his wife and they fall in love all over again.
4. Which of the following names would not have to follow the same-letter rule of the "Name Game" as sung by Shirley Lincoln?

Answer: Cory

The point of the name game is to follow a pattern of nonsensical instructions to create rhymes for names. At different points during the song, Lincoln instructs the listener to change the first letter of the name to a B, F and then M. However, if the name begins with one of those letters, you have to "drop them both and say the name." The examples in the song are Bob becomes Ob, Fred becomes Red and Mary becomes Ary. Cory, not beginning with either of those letters, fits the pattern regularly.

It would be "Cory, Cory, Bo-Bory, banana-bana-bo Fory, fee-fi fo Mory. Cory."
5. According to Jimmy Soul, what should you do "if you want to be happy for the rest of your life" in the song with that title?

Answer: "Get an ugly girl to marry you"

Jimmy Soul claims that pretty women make bad wives because they will constantly break their husbands' hearts. The 1963 song is actually based on a Caribbean song called "Ugly Woman."
6. What does Eminem keep asking the Real Slim Shady to do in his rap song "The Real Slim Shady?"

Answer: "Please, stand up"

"The Real Slim Shady" is arguably, Eminem's most popular song. It was his first song to reach number one in the charts in the United Kingdom. It made him a household name in the United States, both because of the song's popularity and controversial use of expletives.
7. According to The Exciters in the song "Tell Him," what should you do "if you want him to be the very part of you that makes you want to breathe?"

Answer: "Tell him that you're never going to leave him."

The Exciters, perhaps, have better advice for the women than Jimmy Soul did for the men. The song was originally recorded as "Tell Her" when it was sung by a Johnny Thunder.
8. What step from the "Time Warp" from the play and movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" will drive you insane?

Answer: The pelvic thrust

The steps in order are: "a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips, bring your knees in tight." Then the next line of the song is "but it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane-ane-ane-ane."
9. What is the next step, according the Bangles' song "Walk like an Egyptian" after you "slide your feet up the street?"

Answer: "Bend your back"

The music video for "Walk like an Egyptian" was filmed in front of a live studio audience. Susanna Hoffs, the vocalist, suffered from stage fright and she said looking at individual audience members as they sang along helped her overcome her fear.
10. In which children's song and dance would one be instructed to "put your whole self in and shake it all about?"

Answer: Hokey Pokey

The "Hokey Pokey" is common in English speaking nations but it is unclear where the song and dance originated. It is called the "Hokey Cokey" in Britain and Ireland and the "Hokey Tokey" in New Zealand.
