Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Righteous Brothers were not real brothers, but consisted of Bill Medley and which other singer?

Answer: Bobby Hatfield

Medley's voice was a baritone, while Hatfield sang tenor, making an unmistakable combination. The pair met while performing with a band named The Paramours, before striking out on their own in 1962. They had a huge hit in 1965 when they recorded 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling', reaching the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the UK Singles chart.

They followed up with 'Unchained Melody' in 1965 and '(You're My) Soul and Inspiration' in 1966.
2. Flanagan and Allen were a British duo who combined both singing and comedy in their act. Among other things, this led to a very successful recording career. They are associated with which war in particular?

Answer: World War II

Bud Flanagan (1896-1968) and Chesney Allen (1893-1982) first met and paired up in 1926 in a revue organised by Florrie Forde, one of the greatest music hall stars of the 20th century. Their career went from strength to strength from that time, helped along by the warm friendship and compatibility between the two men.

They became particularly successful during World War II where their humour and music was one of the contributing factors in keeping the morale of the country up during that savage time. One of the most famous songs associated with this duo was the beautiful old number, "Underneath the Arches" written in 1932.
3. Which duet performed the song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" after it was selected for the finale of the movie "Dirty Dancing"?

Answer: Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

The song was created by Franke Previte (lyrics), John DeNicola and Don Markowitz (music). The song made the Billboard Hot 100 chart in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

In 1988 Medley and Warnes won Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for their recording.
4. Charlie and Craig Reid were identical twins from Scotland. They achieved chart success under which name?

Answer: The Proclaimers

The brothers had hits with 'Letter from America', which made number three on the UK Singles chart in 1987 and 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)', which charted in both the UK and USA the following year. Their songs were used as the basis for the 2013 film release 'Sunshine on Leith', which was the title of their second album, released in 1988.
5. A duet written by Frank Loesser, it has been recorded many times, but my favorite is the duet by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Jordan. Can you identify the name of the song from these lyrics? "My father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar So really I'd better scurry - Beautiful, please don't hurry Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some records on while I pour"

Answer: Baby, It's Cold Outside

This was written in 1944. It was first sung by Loesser and his wife, Lynn Garland, at a party.

The rights were sold to MGM and the song subsequently appeared in "Neptune's Daughter". It was performed twice during the film, once with Ricardo Montalban and Esther Williams, the second with Red Skelton and Betty Garrett.
6. George and Ira Gershwin created the song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" for the movie "Shall We Dance". Who performed the number?

Answer: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers

A funny song comparing the pronunciation of the same words. Fred and Ginger performed this song while on roller skates!

This was the first Hollywood score by George and Ira Gershwin, but was only a modest success.
7. Released in 1983, "Islands in the Stream" was made famous by the singing duet, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Which famous band wrote the song?

Answer: Bee Gees

The song was written by the Gibb brothers, Barry, Robin and Maurice. It was named after a 1970 novel written by Ernest Hemingway. The Bee Gees also supplied additional vocals to the song made famous by the singing duet Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, which reached number one in the charts in Australia, Canada and the USA.
8. Which instrumental duet was performed in the movie "Deliverance"?

Answer: Dueling Banjos

The song "Dueling Banjos" was written in 1955 by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith. It was originally called "Feudin' Banjos". He was not given credit for the song, and successfully sued to get credit and royalties.

The version recorded for the film was performed by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell.
9. Which duet by Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond made it to number one on the Billboard charts in 1978?

Answer: You Don't Bring Me Flowers

All of these songs can be found on the 2002 album "Duets".

"You Don't Bring me Flowers" was written by Neil Diamond originally for a television show, "All That Glitters", but was never used.

Both of the performers had released the song as a solo. Diamond released the song in 1977 on "I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight", and Streisand released the song in 1978 on "Songbird".
10. In a triumph of technology, which song did daughter Natalie record as a duet with her father?

Answer: Unforgettable

This incredible recording was released in 1991, twenty-six years after Nat "King" Cole had died. It was created by blending his recording of the song with Natalie's recording.

Natalie commented in the liner notes that the recording had been "a labour of love for myself and everyone that has worked on it".
