Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these bands did not perform at Altamont?

Answer: Heart

The complete list of musicians include: Santana, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Rolling Stones.
2. The idea of a free concert in the States was based off the success of the free Rolling Stones concert at which location in London?

Answer: Hyde Park

The concert was held in July 1969, five months before the legendary Altamont. It was held in Hyde Park where the London Hell's Angels were security. These Hell's Angels were quite different than the American Hell's Angels as they tended to be relatively harmless. All obviously went well with that concert.
3. The festival known as Altamont was originally scheduled to be in a different city. Which city was this?

Answer: San Francisco

It was to be held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park but officials realized that there were too many people expected for this free concert. Therefore it was moved out of the city and, a mere twenty hours before the concert was to take place, was moved to Altamont.
4. The Hell's Angels were security at the Altamont concert. Their preferred weapons were pool cues and what other uncommon "weapon"?

Answer: beer cans

Yes, they used beer cans. They brought quite a lot of beer with them and assumed that the best way to calm an angry crowd would be to throw full cans of beer at them. The Rolling Stones road manager purchased this beer for five hundred dollars in order to put an end to that. Also, the Hell's Angels used pool cues to beat people with.
5. Who, in regards to Altamont, stated, "I ain't no cop, I ain't never gonna pretend to be no cop."

Answer: Sonny Barger

Sonny Barger was the leader of the San Francisco Hell's Angels at the time. His statement expresses how the Angels as a whole felt towards their security job.
6. Who, from which band, was knocked out during their band's performance by a Hell's Angel?

Answer: Marty Balin, Jefferson Airplane

A fight near the stage coupled with the mass sums of drugs and alcohol that were being consumed equaled unfocused anger and beatings, meaning Jefferson Airplane's singer Marty Balin was accidentally knocked unconscious.
7. The Rolling Stones arrived late to their own Altamont concert. When they arrived a teenager punched which band member?

Answer: Mick Jagger

A teenager approached Mick Jagger and punched him. Luckily he wasn't hurt but it was just another omen as to the approaching horrors of that day.
8. At Altamont, the Rolling Stones waited until after dark before performing on stage.

Answer: True

Just like every other stop on the Stones' 1969 tour, they waited until well after dark to go on stage, thus, leaving approximately a one hour gap between them and the preceding band. They wanted a big moment so they asked all the lights in the speedway to be shut off including the medical tent. Let's put this in perspective: all the lights off (including the necessary ones), countless drugs, and a wait resulted in even angrier, antsy people.
9. Meredith Hunter, the eighteen year old with a flashy green suit, had which weapon which caused the famed Altamont uproar?

Answer: gun

He had a gun. It is disputed as to whether he merely flashed it or if he shot it at one of the Angels. No one actually saw him fire it but the Hell's Angels still say that one of them was shot. Meredith Hunter was beaten to death with pool cues and stabbed with a knife courtesy of the Hell's Angels.
10. Which song were the Rolling Stones playing during the Meredith Hunter incident at Altamont?

Answer: Under My Thumb

There is a rumor that he was killed during "Sympathy for the Devil" but actually it happened during the first verse of "Under My Thumb".
11. The Altamont concert ended directly after the Meredith Hunter death.

Answer: False

Most of the people there didn't even know about this so everything had to keep rolling. The Rolling Stones had to continue playing otherwise more violence was sure to ensue, however they did call an ambulance.
12. There were four deaths at Altamont. Which of these was not a way that somebody passed on?

Answer: drug overdose

Surprisingly, there were no deaths as a direct result of a drug overdose. Two people were trampled in their sleeping bags and one unidentified person drowned to death.
13. Which one of these was a circumstance that contributed to the general anger held at the Altamont concert?

Answer: All of these

All of these things contributed to the horrors of Altamont. Since the concert was changed twenty hours before it was scheduled to begin people were angry. Some people came from as far as New York to this free California concert. There were about 80,000 cars expected to show up but the Altamont Speedway could only accomodate 12,000 cars. Consequently, cars were backed up for miles and miles. People arrived at such an event days in advance and many of them had large sums of alcohol, drugs, LSD, etc. You get the point.

Not to mention, the short stage so that many people couldn't even see the bands (the stage was only a foot high) and the heat that day.
14. What was the actual date of the Altamont concert?

Answer: December 6, 1969

It was December 6, 1969, five months after the Hyde Park concert and four months after Woodstock (August 17, 1969).
15. What was the name of the documentary-or rockumentary-that covered the 1969 Altamont concert?

Answer: Gimme Shelter

Made in 1970, "Gimme Shelter" documents the Stones 1969 tour with most of its focus on the Altamont concert. There are interviews with band members and Hell's Angels, footage of the concert, and of course, footage of the stabbing incident.
