Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song does this live album open with?

Answer: Rockaway Beach

"I Wanna Be Sedated" was not yet written; the others are played later. At the beginning of this song, Johnny and Tommy start playing; Dee Dee says "Wait!" so that Joey can announce the band, and then they jump right into the song.
2. The album "It's Alive!" was taken from one show only, and the entirety of one show.

Answer: True

Yes, the whole album was done at once. If you listen to it, you can tell-- all the songs meld into each other seamlessly.
3. Where was the album "It's Alive!" recorded?

Answer: London, England

It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London, as evidenced by Joey saying "It's good to be back in England" before "Blitzkrieg Bop". The show was on New Year's Eve, 1977.
4. Joey says this before launching into "I Wanna Be Well": "After eating that ____, I wanna be well." What food does he mention?

Answer: Chicken vindaloo

Apparently in an almost identical New York show a week later, Joey said "dressing room food" instead. But in this show he mentions chicken vindaloo, which later would feature in the song "I Just Wanna Have Something to Do". Refried beans show up in "We're a Happy Family", and British pizza has nothing to do with anything.
5. Which Ramone yells out "1234" at the beginning of each new song?

Answer: Dee Dee

Although the amazon.com review says Joey did it, as a matter of fact, it was Dee Dee, who also sang backup. Joey did say "1234567" during "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", but that's an entirely different thing.
6. How many cover songs did the Ramones perform on the record "It's Alive!"?

Answer: 4

The four songs are "Surfin' Bird", "California Sun", "Do You Wanna Dance?" and "Let's Dance". I must say they made them very much their own, in the best way possible. I've listened to most of the originals and I don't think they're as good.
7. Dee Dee sang lead on at least one song on the album "It's Alive!".

Answer: False

He sang backup on almost all of them, and played competent bass (although it's harder to hear than on studio albums), but at this show he did not sing lead on any of the songs.
8. Which song on this album mentions Nazis?

Answer: Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World

"I'm a Nazi baby, I'm a Nazi yes I am." This gentle satire was a very successful song, as evidenced by the crowd's applause at its end.
9. Which song on the album "It's Alive!" includes the verse: "Second verse, same as the first" and later, "Third verse, different from the first"?

Answer: Judy is a Punk

What I think are the cleverest lyrics ever written-- they make fun of songwriting itself. "Judy is a Punk" is a cute, catchy number.
10. On the album "It's Alive!", which song features incredible guttural vocals on Joey's part, before launching back up into "poppa-mow-mows"?

Answer: Surfin' Bird

"Surfin' Bird", originally by the Trashmen, is one of the most inane songs ever written. If you've ever heard it, you'll be amazed that Joey had the guts to sing it live, it's a tough song, but he does it amazingly well.
11. Which song is announced by "Well, we've got a little tear-jerker for all you lonely hearts out there, and this one's called..."?

Answer: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

The other three have touching lyrics as well, but "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow," a Ramones ballad with excellent guitar work by Johnny, is labeled as a "tear-jerker" by the band themselves.
12. Which Ramones original and hit, first featured on their second album "Leave Home", was regaled with almost thirty seconds of roaring applause after they performed it?

Answer: Pinhead

"Let's Dance", a great cover song which was going to be the end until the Ramones played an encore, was also regaled with long and cheering applause. But it was "Pinhead," the 18th track, that was the most applause-getting in the middle of the show. "Gabba Gabba Hey!" cried the crowd.
13. Which Ramone was drumming when this album was recorded?

Answer: Tommy

Tommy Ramone was the drummer until 1978, when Marky replaced him. At the time this album was recorded, he was still drumming.
14. Which song was NOT part of the three-song encore?

Answer: I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You

The other three are performed last, after a very long bout of applause and cheering, which makes me almost certain that they are an encore. "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You", a true classic, is track 17.
15. Which of the following songs is NOT announced by Joey before the song begins?

Answer: Cretin Hop

Once the band has finished with "Surfin' Bird," they go straight into "Cretin Hop," but Joey announces the names of the other three songs before they begin to play them.
16. Which song mentions Charles Manson?

Answer: Glad to See You Go

"And in a moment of passion / Get the glory, like Charles Manson." One of the catchiest songs on this album, "Glad to See You Go" is the fifth track and has a great tune and great lyrics too.
17. Whose "mother is a geek"?

Answer: Suzy's

"Suzy is a Headbanger", which is amazing live (much better than the studio version, in my opinion), includes the line "Suzy is a headbanger / Her mother is a geek." Perhaps that's why she headbangs?
18. Which Ramones studio album was released the most recently before this album was recorded?

Answer: Rocket to Russia

"Leave Home" and "Ramones" are both earlier albums. "Rocket to Russia" was released months before the show, which was on the dawning of 1978. "Road to Ruin" was released in 1978. 1977 was the Ramones' peak year, with the release of their biggest single, "Sheena is a Punk Rocker".
19. On which song does Joey say "Take it, Dee Dee" just before the song begins?

Answer: Blitzkrieg Bop

He says "Take it, Dee Dee," so Dee Dee yells "1234" and the band rips into one of their biggest hits and definitive songs. Track three on this album, and originally on their debut, "Ramones", "Blitzkrieg Bop" is one of the most famous Ramones songs and has even featured in commercials.
20. Which is the last song the Ramones play on this album, evidenced by Joey saying, "We'd like to thank you all for coming, good night!"?

Answer: We're a Happy Family

"We're a Happy Family" in doubletime ends this album and then Joey says succintly, "We'd like to thank you all for coming, good night!" and turns off the mike to the appreciative roaring of the crowd.

It's Alive! is an amazing album, and it ends too quickly. I hope you enjoyed this quiz. We'd like to thank you all for coming, good night! ;)
