Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This group capitalized on their success at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 to release "Hot Fun In The Summertime". What group was it?

Answer: Sly and The Family Stone

Sly and The Family Stone had successfully played Woodstock earlier in the year, and that appearance greatly increased the number of fans interested in their work. They released this song subsequently, and it became a smash hit, reaching number two on the U.S. charts.

The song is interpreted as being about the joys of summer, but in some circles it has been analyzed to be a commentary on race relations, and the riots of the 1960s. It is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's Greatest Songs Of All Time at number 247.
2. This legend of soul music came up with "Hot Pants" in 1971 and took the song up the charts. Who was it?

Answer: James Brown

The actual title of the song was "Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got to Get What She Wants), but it's doubtful that this would fit on the record label. James Brown recorded and released this song in 1971, and it became a number one R&B hit and made it to number 15 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

The song is actually about the fashion garments known as hot pants in the early 1970s and their effect on guys, when worn by the right woman.
3. A one hit wonder called "Hot Child in the City" went to the top of the charts in 1978. Do you remember who recorded it?

Answer: Nick Gilder

The song was actually recorded by Nick Gilder, a British born Canadian singer who first appeared as a member of the group Sweeney Todd in the mid 1970s. Lowe went solo in the late 1970s and scored with this tune off his second solo album. The song went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the U.S. and number one in Canada as well. Gilder also had major success as a songwriter, penning tunes for the likes of Bette Midler, Joe Cocker Pat Benetar, and Patty Smyth, who took his song called "The Warrior" to the top of the charts in 1984 along with her group called Scandal.
4. "Hot Blooded" was a top 10 song in 1978 for this hard rocking group of multi-national citizens. Who is the band?

Answer: Foreigner

Foreigner was made up of three Americans (Lou Gramm, Ed Gagliardi, Al Greenwood) and two British rockers (Mick Jones, Dennis Elliott) and Jones came up with the band name. They have had numerous hits and some of their biggest include "Feels Like The First Time", "Cold as Ice", "Double Vision", "Waiting For a Girl Like You", and "Urgent" in addition to "Hot Blooded".

This song was one of 15 U.S. Billboard Top 20 hits for the group in a little over a 10 year spans in the late 1970s through the late 1980s.

It peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1978.
5. This raspy voiced superstar took "Hot Legs" onto the charts in 1978. What artist was this?

Answer: Rod Stewart

This song comes from Stewart's 1977 album called "Footloose and Fancy Free", and was released as a single in 1978. Written by Stewart along with Gary Grainger, the song received much airplay, but couldn't match the success of another song on the album called "You're In My Heart". "Hot Legs" only managed a number 28 placing on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

It did better in the U.K. where it reached number five. In later years, the song was covered by the likes of Tom Jones as well as Tina Turner.
6. Please tell me the name of the "Queen of Disco" in the late 1970s who scored with the mega hit "Hot Stuff"?

Answer: Donna Summer

"Hot Stuff" was the first release off Summer's "Bad Girls" album and was a number one U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charting hit in 1979. Summer was basically known as a disco artist before this song, but this put her in the mainstream. The guitar solo had more of a rock feel to it, as evidenced by the person who played guitar on this cut, one Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers fame. Eventually the song would win a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, and the song has been listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 103.
7. This multi genre group scored in 1980 with a song called "Too Hot". What group was this?

Answer: Kool and the Gang

It was Kool and the Gang, a group first formed in 1964, who made it to the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1980 with "Too Hot". It peaked at number five on the charts as well as being a number three hit on the R&B listings, and number 23 in the U.K.

The group themselves were formed in the 1960 as a jazz oriented group and they branched out into R&B in the early 1970s with some major successes on those charts. The have also delved into funk, and disco over the years
8. In 1984 this super group scored with "Hot For Teacher". What was their name? (Clue in question)

Answer: Van Halen

This song was off Van Halen's "1984" album. Its strong sexual theme, with a MTV video which showed a teacher stripping during the song, was a target of many purist organizations, the most prominent of these being the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) which was led by then Senator Al Gore's wife Tipper, who demanded unsuccessfully that the video and the song be pulled from the airwaves. That was probably the highlight for this song, which could only manage a number 56 placing on the Billboard Hot 100 charts despite all the attention.
9. A couple of members of a supergroup of the 1980s teamed up with Robert Palmer and combined to make this song a top 10 hit. What song am I thinking of?

Answer: Some Like It Hot

While supergroup Duran Duran was taking a break from recording in 1984, John Taylor and Andy Taylor joined Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson a drummer formerly with the band Chic, and the four became Power Station. They scored their biggest hit with "Some Like It Hot", which was a number six U.S. Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1985.

The song made number 14 in the U.K. They followed with a cover of the T-Rex classic "Bang a Gong" which made it to number nine of the U.S. charts. The group disbanded as quickly as it appeared with some members returning to their prior acts, and others going on to solo careers.
10. This song, originally a Caribbean tune, was a score for David Johansen in 1987. What pseudonym did he use when he recorded "Hot, Hot, Hot"?

Answer: Buster Poindexter

"Hot, Hot, Hot" was originally a song by the Caribbean singer Arrow in 1982. It was an immediate dance hit and subsequently has been around the world (probably on every cruise ship sailing). The most prominent cover of the song was that of David Johansen, using the name Buster Poindexter, who brought the song onto the charts in 1987.

It charted on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number 45, and the U.S. Dance Charts at number 11. Bring on the pina coladas!
