Born and raised in the Motor City, Burrell launched his jazz career in Detroit-area nightclubs. However, he didn't really become well-known until he moved to New York City.

Kenny got his bachelor's degree in music from Wayne State in his home state of Michigan. He attended only morning classes so he could play at gigs in the evenings. I threw William & Mary in because I listend to a lot of Burrell albums there while I was an undergraduate.
