Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which grunge classic contains the often-misquoted lyrics, "A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido"?

Answer: Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

I actually did not know these lyrics until seeing them on a karaoke screen, some 15 years after first hearing this song. These lyrics are repeated several times throughout the song, widely seen as the signature "grunge anthem." Judging from these lyrics, Kurt Cobain and his bandmates had quite the world-view.
2. "You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar..." is the first line of which Big 80s hit?

Answer: "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League

Did you know that the movie "A Star is Born" was lead singer Philip Oakey's original inspiration in writing "Don't You Want Me"? Oakey then made the song into a "conflicting" duet with one of the band's teenage female vocalists. In the process (unwittingly, maybe), one of the great male/female karaoke duets was made! I always enjoy improvising a little acting to get the crowd into the performance.
3. This song, often heard at baseball games to get the crowd singing along, has a recognizable "OH OH OH" in the chorus following the song title. Then get the rest of the karaoke bar to join you in singing the next line, "Good times never seemed so good!" What song is this?

Answer: Neil Diamond, "Sweet Caroline"

Released in 1969, "Sweet Caroline" was written and performed by Neil Diamond. It has become a staple at Boston Red Sox home games, coming from the speakers at Fenway Park during every home game.
4. If you want to perform this song at karaoke, be prepared. This track is over seven minutes long. But you don't need a FunTrivia Endurance badge to do it! Nearly all of the last five minutes of the song are a repetition of the classic refrain, "na-na-na-nananana, nananana..." and the song's title. What song is this?

Answer: The Beatles, "Hey Jude"

The songwriting credits for "Hey Jude" are attributed to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The most common story is that the ballad evolved from "Hey Jules," a song Paul McCartney wrote to comfort John Lennon's son Julian (Jules) during his parents' divorce.

Even if you don't know the words, getting the crowd to chant "na-na-na-na" along with you is sure to give everyone a great time and liberate you from "Karaoke Hell"!
5. This performer revolutionized the concept of performance and concerts. His "Thriller" is widely seen as the first true music video. Some say it was more like a short film. And of course, he is generally considered the top "karaoke artist" as his songs remain popular amongst hordes of wannabe singers and bar-goers to this day. Who is this legend?

Answer: Michael Jackson

The King of Pop is also considered the King of Karaoke, according to http://www.ez-tracks.com/top-40-karaoke-songs.html. "Beat It" is the most popular karaoke track according to the site. Michael's indelible imprint on music and dance will remain for generations, long after his untimely passing in 2009.
6. This multi-lingual songstress has given us some of the most popular karaoke songs ever, including "My Heart Will Go On," "A New Day Has Come," and "Falling Into You." Few may openly admit to buying her albums but her popularity and success are indisputable. Who is this artist?

Answer: Celine Dion

Celine, born in Quebec on March 30, 1968, has recorded dozens of hits in French and English, giving her a broad fan base among karaoke-singing admirers.
7. One of the most recognizable big-hair 80s bands, this group made a big splash with "Eye of the Tiger," from the soundtrack to Rocky III. Yet they also lay claim to other karaoke favorites, including "I Can't Hold Back," "High on You," "Burning Heart," and "The Search is Over." Who is this group?

Answer: Survivor

Because of the massive success of "Eye of the Tiger," some might consider Survivor a one-hit wonder. But karaoke aficionados around the world haven't tired of belting out their other hits as well.
8. Which of these karaoke favorites begins with the lyrics, "Dark in the city, night is a wire, Steam in the subway, earth is afire...Do do do do do do do do-do do-do-do do-do..."?

Answer: Duran Duran, "Hungry Like the Wolf"

Ah yes, that "do do do do do do do do-do do-do-do do-do..." I still find it so endearing, even after having heard it hundreds of times. How about you? :D

Here was another group that used the newly-created music video genre to propel themselves to stardom. The video for "Hungry Like the Wolf" was filmed in the jungles of Sri Lanka, and evoked the atmosphere of the film "Raiders of the Lost Ark." The video received significant airplay time on MTV, eventually making "Hungry Like the Wolf" a success in the US with near-unanimous critical acclaim.
9. This hit by Barry Manilow was later parodied by several artists who performed "Star Wars Cantina." But what is the title of the original, forever immortalized in karaoke fame?

Answer: Copacabana

This one might be a little tricky, as the wrong choices are all titles of other songs by Barry. But it was "Copacabana" that lent itself to the catchy parody of "Star Wars Cantina".
10. What jazz legend performed the song that begins with these lyrics? "I see trees of green, red roses too...I see them bloom for me and you."

Answer: Louis Armstrong

Indeed, it is Louis Armstrong's classic, "What a Wonderful World." Sure to get all your fellow karaoke singers and audience in an upbeat mood...if you perform it well enough, that is.

Over a century after his birth, Armstrong remains one of the most influential figures in the development and rise in popularity of jazz music. Interestingly, this song wasn't initially a commercial success in the US (though in 1968, this track was at the top of the British charts for a month). Two decades later, the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam" helped bring about a revival in the song's popularity.
