Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What nearly identical items graced the covers of Kraftwerk's first two albums?

Answer: Traffic cones

Both releases were cleverly titled "Kraftwerk." Fans usually refer to them as I and II, or by the cone colors: the first release was orange, the second green. Some members of the band had recorded together before this, under the name "The Organization," but the "cone" albums marked the first uses of the name they would keep.
2. Kraftwerk's third album was called "Ralf and Florian." Which of the following statements about it is true?

Answer: It was the first Kraftwerk full-length album to have songs with lyrics

Kraftwerk's first two albums consisted of experimental instrumental songs. For the third album, the musicians in question, Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider, appeared in a photograph on the cover.
3. Images of what object appeared on the cover of the 1975 Kraftwerk album "Radioactivity"?

Answer: A 1930s-model radio

The radio shown had two dials and a round speaker. Initial pressings of the vinyl edition of the album came with a sheet of stickers. The title (hyphenated as written; not a misprint) was a clever play on words: it referred to both the principle of radioactivity, as well as "activity on the radio," or playing music. The songs on the album covered both subjects.
4. What visual artist contributed lyrics to Kraftwerk's album "Radio-Activity"?

Answer: Emil Schult

Schult did the cover art for a number of Kraftwerk albums. He is also a painter and poet.
5. For what did Kraftwerk name its recording studio, Kling Klang?

Answer: A song on their second album

The title of the track was appropriate. It embodied the band's sound at the time: lots of clicks, whistles, beeps and other noises.
6. To what sporting event did Kraftwerk pay tribute, in the titles of a 1983 single and a 2003 album?

Answer: The Tour de France

The 1983 single was called "Tour de France." The 2003 album was called "Tour de France Soundtracks." The latter's twelve songs referred to health, fitness and competition.
7. What common office and classroom device was the subject of a Kraftwerk song in 1981?

Answer: Pocket Calculator

The song appeared on the album "Computer World." The cover art was a home computer with the musicians' faces in green on the monitor.
8. Which of the following Kraftwerk albums contained no acoustic or non-electronic instruments whatsoever?

Answer: Computer World

Even with the band's use of electronic gear, their early albums still featured 'standard' violins, horns and the like, as accompaniment. For "Computer World" in 1981, however, Kraftwerk dropped the remaining traditional accompaniment. In its stead were synthesizers by Roland, Moog and Korg.
9. What song was the first to feature Kraftwerk in a computer-animated video, and became the closing number for concerts?

Answer: Musique Non-Stop

It was from the 1986 album "Electric Cafe." The track remained in use as the set closer on the group's reunion tour in 2004.
10. Which album was Kraftwerk's first to be nominated for a Grammy Award?

Answer: Minimum-Maximum

It wasn't until the release of this double live album in 2005 that the band earned a Grammy nomination. They were up for Best Dance/Electronic Album. They lost, to Basement Jaxx and their album "Kish Kash."
