Question 1 of 10
1. Many thanks to CellarDoor for this quiz author challenge. The reason I picked this title - 'Leaving On A Jet Plane' - was because I knew someone who, years ago, left her partner by leaving him this record on the kitchen table! Not the most sensitive way, sure; but succinct, to the point, and she did leave a nice gift into the bargain, so, every cloud...

Many artists have covered the song 'Leaving On A Jet Plane' since it was written in 1966. But who wrote the original?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Maybe you want to tell your partner that they're the one who should go - not you. You're not the one in the wrong, and if you don't feel the need for niceties, this is the song for you. It was written by Percy Mayfield and sung by Ray Charles (and many others since) and was number one for two weeks on the 'Billboard Top 100' on October 9, 1961. What is this song that will do all the talking for you?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Maybe your relationship has come to an end because you've found someone else - "a new model; new lines, fresh paint, no mileage at all". Not an easy conversation to have at times like this, so go through all your Mick Terry songs and slap this one on the kitchen table!

Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Think of the all effort you've put in to look great for your man! You slaved over the oven, washed his smalls, had your hair and nails done, and bought a lovely new dress. Sadly, it seems to have all been in terrible vain, as singer Deana Carter found:

"It's perfectly clear, between the TV and beer
I won't get so much as a kiss"

Buy this record, pop it through the letterbox, then run, run like the wind to someone more appreciative!

Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Want to make the message that your relationship is over loud and clear? Subtle or hidden meanings not working? In which case you might LITERALLY need to spell it out. This number one country hit for Tammy Wynette in 1968 should do the trick. Dolly Parton also sang this song. What is it?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. John Deacon wrote this next song in 1984. "I Want to Break Free" featured on his band's album "The Works". Which world famous rock band, in which he was the bass guitarist, did he write this song for? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. It's a hard life when two people are in love with you, and you just can't decide who to choose. My sympathies are with you. Truly. The character of Ross Geller in the comedy series "Friends" had this 'problem' in Season Two. His friends had lots of advice for him, but they should have just told him to give this Mary MacGregor album to the two girls and let them work it out for themselves. Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. You decide to take full advantage of the fact that your partner is out at work, and pack all his belongings in a few bags, and kindly park them neatly on the grass outside the front door. Meanwhile, the locksmith is at work changing all the locks on the doors. But just in case the message doesn't quite sink in, you leave this 1993 "Crowded House" song pinned to the door:
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Perhaps the song choices so far have been a tad blunt. You'd prefer to leave a message with a clear intent, but a kinder afterthought. Fortunately Randy Travis sang a song especially for this. Here are some of the lyrics:

"There's not a mean bone in my body
I never could be unkind
I know we're not talking
But there's something on my mind"

What is the title of this sweet song?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Do you feel you have to leave a relationship, but nevertheless feel quite reluctant about it? Do you feel there's no other choice because your partner just doesn't seem that into you any more? Oh no! That's so sad. But leave this Johnny Cash record as you go:

"I've been washed down the sink of your conscience
In the theater of your love I lost my part
And now you say you've got me out of your conscience...."

What is the last line of this chorus, that is also the title of this song?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: John Denver

John Denver (1943-1997) composed around 200 songs, 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' being one of them. Denver was an extremely philanthropic man supporting charities such as 'The National Wildlife Federation', 'Save The Children', 'The Cousteau Society', 'Friends of The Earth' and the 'Human/Dolphin Foundation'. He was awarded the Presidential "World Without Hunger" Award due to his exhaustive efforts to the 'Hunger Project' and UNICEF.

QUOTE FROM JOHN DENVER:
"There's an aspect of human nature in which we want to think we're better than somebody else. "They're a different color. They speak a different language. They have a different name for the Creator. Whatever it is that makes it okay for me to hate them, to try to get some of their land or some of their resources." "

Answer: Hit the Road Jack

In 1961 Ray Charles signed Percy Mayfield to his own label - 'Tangerine Records'. Prior to this Mayfield wrote songs such as "Please Send Me Someone to Love", which was Number One in the R&B charts in 1950.

"Ray" was a film made in 2004 about Ray Charles's extraordinary life. It starred Jaime Foxx and won multi awards, including two 'Oscars', one of which was for Jaime Foxx for Best Actor.

QUOTE ABOUT BEING IN THE WRONG:
"The man who smiles when things go wrong, has thought of someone to blame it on." - Robert Bloch
3. Maybe your relationship has come to an end because you've found someone else - "a new model; new lines, fresh paint, no mileage at all". Not an easy conversation to have at times like this, so go through all your Mick Terry songs and slap this one on the kitchen table!

Answer: I'm Trading You In

Some of the not-so-subtle lyrics from "I'm trading You In":

"It's not that I am fickle.
Don't mean to be a cad.
You've pulled me through through thick & thin,
through good times & through bad.
But lately, you've been nickel
& dime-ing me to death
& I have noticed other ones
that take away my breath."

Although I must say I do love the Of Montreal song title "Tim I Wish you Had Been Born a Girl". It's so random and specific at once.

QUOTE ABOUT CHEATING:
"Three things are men most likely to be cheated in: a horse, a wig, and a wife." - Benjamin Franklin
4. Think of the all effort you've put in to look great for your man! You slaved over the oven, washed his smalls, had your hair and nails done, and bought a lovely new dress. Sadly, it seems to have all been in terrible vain, as singer Deana Carter found: "It's perfectly clear, between the TV and beer I won't get so much as a kiss" Buy this record, pop it through the letterbox, then run, run like the wind to someone more appreciative!

Answer: Did I Shave My Legs For This?

"Did I Shave My Legs For This?" was also the title of Deana Carter's first album, and went to Number Two in 1996 on the U.S. Top Country Albums Chart. The album sold over 5 million copies.

QUOTE ABOUT A BEAUTY TIP:
"Where lipstick is concerned, the important thing is not color, but to accept God's final word on where your lips end." - Jerry Seinfeld
5. Want to make the message that your relationship is over loud and clear? Subtle or hidden meanings not working? In which case you might LITERALLY need to spell it out. This number one country hit for Tammy Wynette in 1968 should do the trick. Dolly Parton also sang this song. What is it?

Answer: D.I.V.O.R.C.E.

The wonderful Tammy Wynette was the first female country artist to sell a million albums. Coming from a childhood of hard, back-breaking work of picking cotton in the cotton fields in Mississippi, Tammy never forgot her roots, and apparently always kept a crystal bowl of cotton in her home to remind her. She sold more than 30 million records which grossed over $100 million. After ill health, she passed away in her sleep in 1998, at her home in Nashville, Tennessee.

QUOTE ABOUT DIVORCE:
"A divorce is like an amputation: you survive it, but there's less of you." - Margaret Atwood
6. John Deacon wrote this next song in 1984. "I Want to Break Free" featured on his band's album "The Works". Which world famous rock band, in which he was the bass guitarist, did he write this song for?

Answer: Queen

In 1971, at only nineteen years of age, John Deacon became a member of the rock band Queen, joining Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor. He wrote several songs for the band, including "Another One Bites the Dust" which was Queen's biggest selling song in the United States.

Brian May and Roger Taylor sang the song "We Are the Champions" with Robbie Williams (an ex Take That member), for the film "A Knight's Tale". In an interview with a British tabloid, Deacon is quoted as saying "It is one of the greatest songs ever written but I think they've ruined it. I don't want to be nasty but let's just say Robbie Williams is no Freddie Mercury. Freddie can never be replaced - and certainly not by him."

QUOTE ABOUT ROYALTY:
"Being a princess isn't all it's cracked up to be." - Diana, Princess of Wales

Answer: Torn Between Two Lovers

Mary MacGregor sang this song in 1976. It had been written by Peter Yarrow and Phillip Jarrell. It had apparently been inspired by "Dr Zhivago", which was a novel about a man who loved two women.

QUOTE ABOUT COMPLAINING WHEN THINGS ARE TOO GOOD:
"Oh, I know. This must be so hard. "Oh, no! Two women love me. They're both gorgeous and sexy. My wallet's too small for my fifties, and my diamond shoes are too tight!" - Chandler Bing in "Friends".

Answer: Locked Out

The Melbourne formed rock group, Crowded House wrote "Locked Out" in 1993. it was the most successful song on their album "Together Alone". The band were together for eleven years, and split in 1996, but reunited eleven years later. They also received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) from the Queen in 1993 for their contribution to music.

QUOTE ABOUT CROWDS:
"Youth doesn't need friends - it only needs crowds." - Zelda Fitzgerald
9. Perhaps the song choices so far have been a tad blunt. You'd prefer to leave a message with a clear intent, but a kinder afterthought. Fortunately Randy Travis sang a song especially for this. Here are some of the lyrics: "There's not a mean bone in my body I never could be unkind I know we're not talking But there's something on my mind" What is the title of this sweet song?

Answer: Have a Nice Rest of Your Life

This song is so sad in it's dignity:

"Have a nice rest of your life without me
I'll be proud to be a part of your history
If it makes you happy honey
Keep talking bad about me
And have a nice rest of your life without me"

QUOTE ABOUT UNREQUITED LOVE:
"Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love." - Charlie Brown
10. Do you feel you have to leave a relationship, but nevertheless feel quite reluctant about it? Do you feel there's no other choice because your partner just doesn't seem that into you any more? Oh no! That's so sad. But leave this Johnny Cash record as you go: "I've been washed down the sink of your conscience In the theater of your love I lost my part And now you say you've got me out of your conscience...." What is the last line of this chorus, that is also the title of this song?

Answer: I've Been Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart

"I've Been Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart" is a song about a man who feels lonely once he realizes his partner loves him no more.

Johnny Cash (1932-2003) was apparently friends with every single president of the United States since Richard Nixon. Random fact, but quite interesting I thought... He was supposed to be closest (president-wise) with Jimmy Carter, as he was married to June Carter Cash, a distant relative of Jimmy Carter. He proposed to June more than thirty times before she agreed to marry him! That must be the single best definition of 'stamina'.

QUOTE ABOUT LONELINESS:
Daphne: "Feeling a bit lonely are we?"
Niles: "Only when I'm by myself or when I'm with other people." - from an episode of "Frasier"
