This song is about fourteen minutes long. It also contains the album's title, "Dark Passion Play" near the nine minute mark: "The morning dawned upon his altar/Remains of the dark passion play". This song is the first on the album, thus starting the entire thing with "The end".

The title of this song comes from a book on evolution by Richard Dawkins, who speaks in both this song and "Shudder Before the Beautiful". The sections allude to various points in Earth's history: "Four Point Six" to the age of the planet in billions of years, "Life" to the emergence of life, "The Toolmaker" to humans learning to build things, etc.

The animal effects come between "Life" and "The Toolmaker".

"Today, in the year of our Lord, 2005, Tuomas was called from the cares of the world." Tuomas Holopainen was very much alive when this song came out. He was suicidal at the time, and has said that writing this song saved him from killing himself. Immediately after this obituary in the song, the pendulum can be heard finally falling on the poet.
