Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song includes these lyrics? "Every now and then the things I lean on lose their meaning and I find myself careening in places where I should not let me go."

Answer: Something In the Way She Moves

James Taylor's first album, released in 1968 on Apple Records, contains some of his best songs. The album is a tad overproduced but side one ends simply, with James singing "Something In the Way She Moves" and accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. George Harrison heard James singing this song and liked it so much that he used the first line in a song of his own. "Something in the way she moves, attracts me like no other lover..." Sound familiar?
2. What song includes these lyrics? "I've been first and last Look at how the time goes past. But I'm all alone at last. Rolling home to you."

Answer: Old Man

Neil Young's "Harvest" album was a landmark in the singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s--and "Old Man" was, for me, the best song on an album full of gems.
3. What song includes these lyrics? "And you make them long, and you make them tough. But they just go on and on, and it seems you can't get off."

Answer: Where Do The Children Play?

Cat Stevens hit it big with his "Tea for the Tillerman" LP in 1970. In addition to the big hit "Wild World", the LP contained a number of well-crafted tunes--"Father and Son", "On the Road to Find Out" and the ecology-minded "Where Do the Children Play?"
4. What song includes these lyrics? "I've often felt forsaken And certainly misused But I'm all right, I'm all right I'm just weary to my bones"

Answer: American Tune

Paul Simon, unlike so many of his contemporaries, has continued to turn out superb music well into his 60s. His extraordinary song-writing talent, so apparent in the Simon and Garfunkel days, has only improved with time. His second solo album, "Here Comes Rhymin' Simon" contains such gems as "Kodachrome", "Something So Right" and the elegiac "American Tune".

The song's melody owes a debt to J.S. Bach but the lyrics are pure Simon.
5. What song includes these lyrics? "Oh people, look among you It's there your hope must lie There's a sea bird above you Gliding in one place like Jesus in the sky"

Answer: Rock Me On the Water

Jackson Browne's first album, "Saturate Before Using", is still my favorite of all of his albums. The gospel-tinged "Rock Me on the Water" is only one of the superb songs on the LP. The album also includes "Jamaica, Say You Will", "Doctor, My Eyes" and "Something Fine".
6. What song includes these lyrics? "Oh, seasons change with scenery, Weaving time in a tapestry, Won't you stop and remember me?"

Answer: A Hazy Shade of Winter

If you're thinking, "Wait a minute! 'A Hazy Shade of Winter' was a hit for the Bangles in the 1980s! What gives?", relax. Simon and Garfunkel recorded this song on their classic "Bookends" LP in 1968.
7. What song includes these lyrics? "Oh the rogue, the red red rogue He cooked good omelettes and stews And I might have stayed on with him there But my heart cried out for you"

Answer: California

Joni Mitchell's "Blue" album from 1971 is still considered by many critics to be the high point of her extraordinary career. "California" is a light-hearted and, at times, comical tour of life in the California hippie scene of the time.
8. What song includes these lyrics? "Carry on. Never mind feeling sorry for yourself. It doesn't save you from your troubled mind"

Answer: That Lonesome Road

According to legend, James Taylor sang his beautiful hymn-like "That Lonesome Road" at the funeral of his friend, John Belushi. First released in 1981 on his "Dad Loves His Work" LP, it is one of his very best songs.
9. What song includes these lyrics? "Hold me in your hands like a bunch of flowers Set me movin' to your sweetest song."

Answer: The Right Thing To Do

Carly Simon's 1972 "No Secrets" LP contained the mega-hit "You're So Vain". "The Right Thing to Do" was yet another hit from this hugely successful album.
10. What song includes these lyrics? "Well, I wake up in the morning Fold my hands and pray for rain I got a head full of ideas That are drivin' me insane"

Answer: Maggie's Farm

Bob Dylan is, of course, the grandaddy of all great singer-songwriters. He cleared the path for Neil Young, Paul Simon, James Taylor and countless others. "Maggie's Farm" from 1965's "Bringing It All Back Home" is one of his most entertaining songs from the peak of his career.
