Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. McFly took their band name from a character in which popular film?

Answer: Back To The Future

McFly were inspired by the Busted single "Year 3000" which has a reference to the film "Back To The Future" in its lyrics. The character of Marty McFly was played in the film by Michael J Fox. Good job they did not name themelves after the character of Doctor Emmett Brown, as I don't think the name Brown would have had quite the same ring to it! Whilst researching this quiz I discovered that there was an American band called McFly.

Despite the fact that they had actually been around longer then the UK McFly, they very kindly changed their name to Mighty McFly to avoid any confusion.
2. Which instrument does Harry Judd play for McFly?

Answer: Drums

McFly are: Guitarist and singer Tom Fletcher, Bass guitarist and singer Dougie Poynter, Drummer Harry Judd and guitarist and vocalist Danny Jones.
3. McFly actually first visited the top of the UK charts by appearing on an additional track on Busted's "Crashed The Wedding" single. What was the title of the old Foundations hit that the two bands collaborated on?

Answer: Build Me Up Buttercup

"Build Me Up Buttercup" was a UK #2 hit for The Foundations in 1968, way before the members of both bands were even born! Busted and McFly are well known for their friendship, (indeed, McFly are sometimes referred to as "Baby Busted") and have jointly written songs, as well as playing on tour together.
4. Which member of McFly originally auditioned for a place in the band Busted?

Answer: Tom

Tom saw the advertisment for a final member in the music paper "New Musical Express". Although he got down to the final two in the auditions, he lost out on a place in Busted to Charlie Simpson. All was not lost though, and Tom got a deal with the Busted management and McFly were born.
5. "Five Colours In Her hair" became the first UK #1 for McFly in April 2004, but which song did it knock off the top spot in the charts?

Answer: "Yeah" by Usher

After knocking Usher off the #1 slot, McFly found themselves removed two weeks later by Eamon and his infamous "I Don't Want You Back" hit.
6. "Went out with the guys and before my eyes" are the opening lyrics to which McFly song?

Answer: That Girl

"That Girl" became the third hit single for McFly, reaching #3 in September 2004.
7. In October 2004, McFly filmed two scenes for which BBC drama series?

Answer: Casualty

In the "Casualty" storyline, a fan gets injured whilst trying to take a picture of McFly at their hotel room window. The characters, mother and daughter Sally and Rose Pearson, use a window cleaners cradle to lower themselves to the 14th floor where the band are staying. Rose is injured whilst climbing back into the cradle after taking the photo. McFly then later pay a visit to the Holby A&E Department to see how she is recovering, presenting a bunch of flowers to Rose with the words "Roses for Rose"! The episode first aired in the UK on Saturday 8th January 2005.

In interviews, McFly said they enjoyed their acting experience and hoped they would have the chance to appear before the cameras again. In their normal musicial roles, McFly performed at the "Eastenders Christmas Party" in December 2004, singing the Beach Boys classic "Little Saint Nick". Could an acting role follow for one of the band in the future?
8. What kind of "Babe" features in the title of a track on McFly's "Room On The 3rd Floor" album?

Answer: Surfer

When McFly members Danny and Tom first went to London they stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel. The title of their album was inspired by the fact that they stayed in Room 363 on the third floor. As well as "Surfer Babe", the album also contains the #1 singles "Five Colours In Her Hair" and "Obviously".
9. McFly won five awards at the Smash Hits Awards in November 2004.

Answer: True

The "Smash Hits" magazine awards 2004 were hosted by Vernon Kay and June Sarpong. McFly received their awards for Star of the Year, Best Album (for "Room on the 3rd Floor"), Best Video (for "That Girl"), and Best UK Band. Danny Jones also received the award for Most Fanciable Male.

In October 2004, McFly also won the award for Best Newcomer at the Disney Awards. The band narrowly missed out on having the UK Record of the Year in December 2004 with "Five Colours In Her Hair", coming in at second place to friends Busted, who won with their "Thunderbirds" hit.
10. After the release of their album in July 2004, McFly earned themselves a place in the Guinness Book of Records. For what reason?

Answer: The youngest band ever to debut at #1

The record of "Youngest band ever to have a #1 album" was previously held by The Beatles, a band who, along with another 60s band, The Beach Boys, McFly cite as being a big influence. 2004 was a great year for McFly, with four hit singles, a #1 album, numourous awards and a guest role in a major TV series. A pretty good start to their career really!
