Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "He can make you love, he can make you cry. He will bring you down then he'll get you high". Who is he?

Answer: Guitar Man

Bread were formed in the late-60's and led by talented singer-songwriter David Gates. This is their 1972 hit from the album of the same name which also contained the songs "Aubrey" and the excellent "Sweet Surrender".
2. Who sang, "It's so hard to keep this smile from my face, losing control, I'm all over the place"?

Answer: Stealers Wheel

Once you've seen Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" you'll never hear "Stuck in the Middle With You" again without thinking of Michael Madsen dancing around, gleefully slicing off the cop's ear and dousing him in petrol! Incidentally, in the movie, the DJ on the radio announcing this song is comedian Steve Wright.
3. Which song contains the line "With a pink hotel, a boutique and a swinging hotspot"?

Answer: Big Yellow Taxi

Originally by Joni Mitchell, this song decries the loss of greenery and natural resources as we strive to "improve" our society ("...they paved paradise and put up a parking lot..."). It was excellently covered in 2003 by Counting Crows featuring guest vocals by Vanessa Carlton. "Little Red Corvette" was by Prince, or whatever he is calling himself these days; "Pink Cadillac" by Natalie Cole (written by Bruce Springsteen, would you believe) and "Long Black Limousine" was by Elvis.
4. "Any heart not tough or strong enough to take a lot of pain". Who sang this line?

Answer: Nazareth

The classic "Love Hurts" was a UK top 10 hit for this Scottish band in 1975. Originally a hit for both Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers, it was written by C&W singer/songwriter Boudleaux Bryant.
5. In which song will you hear the line: "So afraid of one who's so afraid of you, what you gonna do"?

Answer: Crazy On You

From Heart's 1976 platinum album "Dreamboat Annie" which also yielded the title track and "Magic Man". Guitarist Nancy Wilson married film director Cameron Crowe in 1986 and wrote the film scores for his movies "Vanilla Sky", "Jerry Maguire" and "Almost Famous".
6. Who sang "My motto's always been: When it's right, it's right"?

Answer: Starland Vocal Band

"Afternoon Delight" was a huge one-off hit for the Starland Vocal Band in 1976, even winning a Grammy for that year. Who would have thought to look at this quartet from Washington DC that they were singing about nipping home for a bit of "love in the afternoon"!
7. Which Foreigner song contains the line: "You're digging for gold yet throwing away a fortune in feelings"?

Answer: Cold as Ice

Formed in 1976 by three Englishmen and three Americans, hence the name, Foreigner's debut, self-titled album was a huge hit yielding two hit singles: "Feels Like the First Time", and "Cold As Ice".
8. Which band sang "I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind"?

Answer: The Knack

"My Sharona" was a #1 hit for The Knack in 1979. Lead singer Doug Fieger, who had originally been with Sky, actually did have a girlfriend called Sharona. A parody of this song, "My Bologna" was the first rip-off that brought 'Weird-Al' Yankovic to the public eye, recorded while he was still a college DJ.
9. Which song contains these lyrics - "I see the crystal visions, I keep my visions to myself"?

Answer: Dreams

The second album to be released by Fleetwood Mac after the arrival of Buckingham & Nicks was "Rumours". It went on to become one of the biggest selling albums of all time and provided the band with some of their best-known hits such as "Don't Stop", "Go Your Own Way" and this track "Dreams". Written when all the band members were experiencing marital problems, the comment was made in passing that it 'sounded like a bunch of rumours' and that was how the album got its name.
10. Who sang "What can I do, what can I be, when I'm with you I want to stay there"?

Answer: The Beatles

"Got To Get You Into My Life" originally appeared on the album "Revolver", and was apparently Paul's attempt to recreate a Motown-type sound. On the release of the Beatles' 1976 compilation "Rock 'n Roll Music", it entered the charts, reaching #7 in the US.
11. In which song will you find the line "All my dreams pass before my eyes, that curiosity"?

Answer: Dust in the Wind

This beautiful acoustic piece provided a rare chart success for Kansas in 1978. "Blowin' in the Wind" was of course a Bob Dylan track; "Reap the Wild Wind" was by Ultravox and "Wild is the Wind" by David Bowie.
12. "From my window I'm staring while my coffee goes cold". Who sang this line?

Answer: Joe Jackson

"Is She Really Going Out With Him?" was the debut release for Joe Jackson from his 1978 album "Look Sharp!". To me this song epitomized teenage angst brilliantly portrayed by Jackson's acerbic wit. It is full of sardonic, witty lines such as "They say that looks don't count for much, if so, well there goes your proof".
13. In which of the following will you hear the line "All my fears are drifting by me so slowly now, fading away"?

Answer: Follow You Follow Me

This endearing ballad from the album "...And Then There Were Three" remains one of my favourite Genesis tracks. The title of the album refers to the departure of original band member Steve Hackett, leaving the three now best-known band members to continue.

This line-up of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks was to remain through six studio albums and 18 years before Collins officially left the band in 1996.
14. "Tonight I wanna see it in your eyes, feel the magic, there's something that drives me wild". Who sang this line?

Answer: Kiss

I can't claim to have been a huge fan of KISS, but have always enjoyed "I Was Made For Loving You" from their double platinum release "Dynasty" in 1979. Best known for their outrageous make-up and costumes, this album was to be their last before being "Unmasked" in 1980.
15. And lastly, who claimed "You always have my unspoken passion although I might not seem to care"?

Answer: Billy Joel

Again, I cannot claim to be a fan of Billy Joel, but "Just the Way You Are" is one of the classic love songs of all time. Originally from the album "The Stranger", it reached #3 in the US in 1977 and earned Billy two Grammies. Thanks again for playing my quiz. I hope you enjoyed it and will look out for more.
